C-c-c-c-c-combo-breaker!!!

I was watching one of my IN 1cc replays, and after Kaguya was defeated and the final results came up, I exited to the main menu before the typical fade-to-white at the end of the game could complete.  When I was at the menu, the fade CONTINUED until it was completed and I couldn't see anything on the screen for a moment.  Definitely a strange moment there. :derp:

Wait a minute.
Sanae is the descendant of Suwako, who has the ability to create earth.
Sanae is a wind priestess. Kanako is the goddess of wind and rain.

People love to make fun of Utsuho for being dumb, a "bird brain." But, crows and ravens are actually considered one of the world's smartest animals. Hmm...
nintendonut888: Hey Baity. I beat the high score for Sanae B hard on the score.dat you sent me. X3
Baity: For a moment, I thought you broke 1.1billion. Upon looking at my score.dat, I can assume that you destroyed the score that is my failed (first!) 1cc attempt on my first day of playing. Congratulations.

She also apparently understands nuclear physics. I'm not sure where the whole "Okuu is dumb" thing started.

Also, and this doesn't really mean anything, but I really thought Seiga was a ghost when I first fought her. She's got a pale color scheme, her subtitle is "Wicked Hermit Passing through Walls," she's teamed up with a zombie in a cemetery, and her posture makes it all too clear that she's floating around. Everyone flies, but most character portraits depict them in a standing position.

It probably has something to do with Utsuho's dialogues in the games.
Hisoutensoku Dialogue:
Quote
Sanae: That's as far as you go!
Utsuho: Wait, what were we doing again?
Sanae: Er... You were listening to my orders and helping me with my investigation of this reactor.
Utsuho: Ah, is that right??
Sanae: Yes, that's right. Please proceed as planned.

Nah, Okuu was portrayed as pretty block-headed shortly after SA's release. Soku's dialogue just uh built upon that to an obvious extent.

The fact that she was so easily manipulated by Kanako, said the only reason she wanted more power was "to get more power", she couldn't remember Kanako whatsoever, Orin calls her a birdbrain and guesses that Satori couldn't tell of Utsuho's situation because she already forgot it, Suika calls her an idiot, and her theme notes indirectly describe her as a fool... is probably why.

Fortunately, ZUN's next book will cover this. xD

Something small, and not something I noticed "just now" but for the longest time I thought Meiling was her last name because she is the only character without "no" in their name to use eastern name order. I did not for a second question her being named "Hong" for a good 2 years.

Whether or not Utsuho is bright, she at least has a good amount of knowledge in nuclear physics; otherwise, the nuclear plant (and even Gensokyo) probably wouldn't last long...

Fandom seems to be forgetting that Momiji is a wolf and not a dog.  In fact, I actually forgot that Momiji is a wolf!  Same thing applies for Nue being treated as an alien and not a nue...  And let's not forget about Meiling being treated as a dragon...

Youmu's slash in Ten Desires has a different length depending on power level.  I knew the charge time was different, but I didn't realize the slash distance was less until clearing TD extra with her.

Something about Mima
« Reply #438 on: January 27, 2012, 07:02:55 PM »
I was thinking about something on the walk home from college, As the title says, it was about Mima.

Now it recently came to my attention that "mima" is actually a family-based term.  Doing some research I found out that "mima" is used refer to a foster mother.

And now we come to Mima herself. Given the obvious, we would all come to the conclusion that she's sort of a mother/teacher figure to Marisa.

But with that relationship, it could be possible that Mima isn't her real name at all.

I know Mima (魅魔) can mean "charming demon" or something of the sort, but it's pretty coincidental that she's represented as something of a mother to Marisa without any strong hint as to whether or not they are related.

Also, she's the only character who has been playable without a "known" last name. Makes sense (to me) that "Mima" would be an endearing title rather than an actual name.

Welcome to the literary world of devices, this one being the "double entendre"; giving a character a name which can have more than one meaning.

I've seen "mima" used as a term for grandmother as well.  I think it's just a coincidence, though.  'Specially since before she got Yukari'd, Mima preferred hanging around Reimu's place.
Life and death are without purpose.  Our attempts to give them one are quite presumptuous of us.  But in the end, we exist, and that is enough.

None of the HRtP characters have last names, though I do wonder what made him choose to keep Mima rather than make a new character for SoEW, and then carry her through the rest of the PC-98 era. I don't think she's Marisa's mother though. Actually, when Marisa first appeared, I don't think she was even supposed to be human. Then again, maybe Mima just made her with magic. It would fit with her boss title.

I don't know, the only playable characters in non decimal Touhou games have been human. So, I just assume Marisa is a human.

Oh right. :V Yeah, I think that does make sense. They certainly knew each and must have some kind of background.

She's definitely human now, but in the early games she was called "A Being of Magic and Scarlet Dreams" or something along those lines, so ZUN may have changed his mind or something. Also Mima and Yuuka were playable in non-decimal games and they weren't human, and that's leaving out the phantasmagoria games, which are full of nonhumans of course.

Oh my God Kanako, I just thought of something else!

We all know how Maribel dreams of a world where magic and monsters exist called Gensokyo, correct? Maybe the truth is that  all of Genoskyo is nothing more than a dream.

Think of it. In this day and age you don't believe in monsters and magic right?  Therefore not believing in them means they don't exist. Such beliefs are "dead".  However, the one place where they can exist is within someone's own fantasy. Their dreams.

And Reimu herself has those as her signs. Fantasy Sign and Dream Sign. The boundary she guards is probably the boundary that separates the real world from the dream world. Dreams cannot interact with the real world, in which case they are just nothing but fantasies; things that don't  exist.  It could be that Gensokyo itself is simply a metaphoric world  of fantasies that still exist within our imaginations. Never dying and everlasting. As for Yukari seemingly passing through the barrier between Gensokyo and the outside world, maybe that too is a metaphor. For what? ...I have no idea. Fantasies becoming reality by perseverance? I don't know. Maybe it's magic.  :V

Of course, one might also bring up Sanae's entrance into this "world of dreams".  I could toss in a ton of random, nonsensical theories that won't make sense. But...they won't make sense. Perhaps Sanae is just another entity in this dream world. Perhaps she's not really from the real world but an embodiment of the mind that still clings to fantasy (which would explain the goddesses that accompany here), so she truly fits in Gensokyo. I'd say this applies to anything/anyone else that isn't native to Gensokyo.

Take it or leave it, but I feel that it makes sense to an extent (key phrase).

What? I don't buy this.
We know the Scarlet Devil Mansion crew came in from the real world and we also know the Mountain of Faith crew came in the real world.
We also know things that are forgotten or lost appear in Gensokyo and those have nothing to do with belief. Things like the communications
tower, the Ipod, the tv, the computer, etc. are there not because of the lack of belief, but because it is lost or forgotten.

Maribel also mentions how she is trying to find a way to Gensokyo.
