Man, whats with all the UFO disapoint. Admittedly, none of the characters alone are strong (except byakuren i guess, and her themes rock), but together they're pretty great.

Shou is a bit dull mind, but fits the position shes supposed to.

Getting part lives, instead of just being awarded full ones. "Life fragments" would be the unfilled stars you get for beating attacks in SA or filling UFOs in UFO, and collecting so many of them gives you an additional life.

Also, I just assumed Last Words were big dramatic spells. I mean during Kaguya's Last Word, the interface changed as well as the theme. I mean there's even a "Last Word theme".

Since the title of the game refers to the ten spiritual realms of Buddhism I'd bet big money on the notion that the bosses will be a demon or evil soul, an hungry ghost, a beast youkai, a shura, a human and a deity in that order. For extra and phantasm the bosses might be a Savakabuddha and a Pratyekabuddha respectively (basically lesser Celestials). I doubt you'd get to fight a Bodhisattva or a true Buddha, since they are pure, enlightened beings. The Savaka and Pratyeka versions still have some form of ego, hungering wisdom and insight.

That is why we keep saying, Last words != Final spells (Last spells w/e you want to name them). Too bad ZUN doesn't elaborate on this in his afterword. Basically, you can see them as fireworks being showed off. Last words have no link with the main game or main spell cards during the game. They are singular challenges. Hence Touhou is all about spell cards.

About Kaguya's interface changing, girl needs her own bg like Eirin instead of the one used at final stage.

Look it is not hard to understand. You got Spell cards, Final spells and Last Words.

- Final spells are the ones you get in IN when you have enough time orbs collected. For example Marisa's Final Spark in Stage 4b. If you don't have enough time orbs, they won't use this card thus you will never see it. Simple.
- However, Marisa has also a Last Word, which is 'Blazing Star'. This basically extra unlock-able challenge you have to overcome. Other last words are Tewi's Ancient Duper etc.

I think what you are confused with is the counter-bombing using the players. As Final Spark is also a counter-bomb attack for the girls if you use them as a player. And in this case, it would be indeed what you seem to call "dramatic last resort spell". Because if you counterbomb as Alice, Marisa will user her Final spell. If you counterbomb as Marisa, Alice will use her Final spell. Same goes also for the other teamed girls.

In that case, though, both Eirin and Kaguya had the same bg for their last spell and last word they had for their other spells.

With Eirin you just happen to have a different bg for every single nonspell. :derp:

Those are considered Last Words? Not really as memorable as the ones the final bosses use. So I don't really regard them as Last Words, just Final Spellcards.
