Some of the vehemently anti-yuri folks seem to be so because they love their characters so much that they don't want to see them in sexual situations. And I can understand that, and all, I just think that when people say they dislike yuri, most of the time it's not because it's yuri; it's because much erotica out there is, simply, badly written.
For the record, this isn't my position on the matter, as I'm perfectly fine with seeing the characters in sexual situations
. I dislike Touhou yuri (which I am using in this sense to refer to any romantic pairing between the Touhou cast, sexual or otherwise) for the reason I stated earlier: it seems to completely disregard what I consider to be the more likely possibilities of strong friendship, or devotion, or hell, even outright hatred sometimes. It reminds me of the middle-school concept of "if you sit next to this person, you have a crush on them" that I absolutely loathe, and the reasons for most pairings are about as sturdy as that.
Someone once told me to look at the dialogue between Marisa and Alice in Imperishable Night to prove to me that they were in love. I read it, and the
first thing I realized was that I have conversations like that with my best friend IRL all the time. So either I'm suddenly homosexual, which I know I'm not, or this person was completely mistaken. Similarly, people have told me that I must be crazy to think that Sakuya doesn't want to get in Remilia's bloomers or Utsuho and Rin for Satori in a similar manner, because there's no way anyone could be so devoted to someone without loving them.
It annoys me to no end as the huge range of possible relationships are ignored in favor of the cliche yuri option. Relationships are often complicated, and there are many different kinds and degrees of love; the love of best friends, the love of a pet and a master, the love of a mother and daughter, or combinations of those. To see the potential complexity in Touhou be devolved into generic romance on the basis of what I feel are shallow reasons or outright lack of observation and examination is something I feel strongly opposed to.
Still, even then, as I stated in another topic, this isn't going to ruin Touhou for me at all. I have my Gensokyo, you have yours, everyone's happy. It's just a part of the fandom that irks me, but we all have something about it that does that. Someone probably hates my mindset on the matter, and they're entitled to that opinion.
