No. I've been told the only reason to use incense is stacked with attract modules but I haven't tried it yet. I may tomorrow.

You activate a Lucky Egg and an Incense at the same time in a populated area with lures, and then evolve stuff while you're doing that.

Anyways, all of the above stuff about catching Pokemon being BS isn't actually intended, fortunately.

Almost got my next 70 mons for another powerlevel session to reach level 25.

Ironically I was viewing the promo video again when the game was getting launched:
- Go catch > Catch what!? All these nifty  x-meters ?? Pokemon
- Go trade > Will be implemented after Minor Text Fixes.
- Go battle > Ha ha ha ha. . . .
- Go play together > This was a social interactive game? Huh?
- Go unite > I'mma let you finish but (ry

To be fair if you're playing the game right (not slow-driving) and don't live in a rural area the social element of tbis game is huge. It's legit amazing.

The video shows 3 v 3 trainer battle with the title 'Go play together' Since battling isn't even in, you can't socialize much on this point to be honest.

And I am living in a city. I cycle usually. Slow driving is waste of gas + dangerous. Meeting plenty of people having small chat is common thing. But everybody is feeling iffy after that since you can't do much aside than show each other's e-peen with your pokemon.

My socially recluse brother's actually out every day hanging with people he met over Pok?mon Go. They now go Pok?mon hunting together. It's defo possible to bond over Pok?mon Go.

I cannot deny the fact that that is a wonderful thing of course. Perhaps I am being slightly too whiny / picky about this. Maybe because hitting a certain level and number of pokemon makes it a bit dull.

I'll wait patiently for future content.

Welcome to Niantic.

Some friends and I were heading to the store by car, one of us was playing and spotted a Wartortle. The one driving made a U-Turn just so we could catch it, what a homie. :derp:

As for me, I'm "grinding" Pidgeys so I get enough things to evolve once I wanna use my Lucky Egg. I'm still at level 11.

Late, but

"The [tracker], although enjoyed by many, was also confusing and did not meet our underlying product goals."
Yeah, no, it wasn't confusing at all.
It wasn't confusing until you hit Pokemon with 3 footprints that was anywhere between 2 blocks or the entire length of Route 66 away and your GPS service sucked so much it wouldn't register you turning, effectively rendering the "right direction" pulse feature useless.

Well, it was really mostly the first part, but I certainly wouldn't have known about the pulsing thing if I didn't watch a video on it.

Can anyone confirm if the "nearby" window has ANY merit, or is it just a broken troll with no correlation to reality?

This was the view from my bedroom a few minutes ago, so of course I dropped what I was doing, got up, and scoured the neighborhood. And of course I didn't find anything. Something like this has happed like 8-10 times in the last week alone, and I have NEVER found anything cool that popped up in that box. What gives?

The nearby window is indeed strange, sometimes it feel like the pokemon in that thing like to avoid you and occasionally some common Mon that you could swear weren't there a second before appears out of nonwhere, then other times it work kinda fine and you start finding all the cool things that are on the radar even if your movements are severely restricted (being in a building or in a car (that you'd better not be driving) for example) I don't know if there is a secret mechanism beind it or if is just lag and/or the servers don't working like they should

Pokemon spawns are fixed. Spawns basically work by having specific, static locations spawn a pokemon out of some pool of possible pokemon using some algorithm, at fairly fixed intervals throughout a day. The spawn points that are active at any given time then seem random because the pokemon spawned are random and the locations are active only at certain times that can be frequent or infrequent. So,

I don't know if there is a secret mechanism beind it or if is just lag and/or the servers don't working like they should
It's a really straightforward system that is obfuscated by what's unknown to the player, i.e. where spawns are located, when they're active, what pokemon they spawn and with what distribution.

As far as the nearby window goes, I'm pretty certain there's no order to it, it's just a collection of what pokemon have popped up in your radius that may or may not have despawned, and may or may not still be in your radius. It definitely sucks badly but I don't think it's trickery.

So for what it's worth, regarding that Victreebel I was trying to find earlier, I was periodically shutting out the app and re-opening, as well as constantly checking the Nearby window. The Nearby window appeared to be behaving in a reliable way, with Victreebel moving down the list as I went in a certain direction and up in another, but at some point a number of trash Pokemon popped in above it, pushing it way down. That would make me think that a bunch of things had spawned in the intervening area between me and it, but none of the stuff I was encountering as I was searching was on the list, or if it was it wasn't first on the list.

So on one hand I feel fairly confident that the "Nearby lists Pokemon in proximity order" is bunk because I was encountering things that weren't even on the list despite periodic refreshings of the app. On the other hand, it really did look like Victreebel was moving up and down the list in a predictable way at one point. I don't know. Given that I've tried a number of different things and have never gotten any results from any of them I think it's best for my sanity if I just assume it's totally meaningless. I've missed out on a Victreebel, a Poliwrath, a Weezing (really bad for me because Weezing is one of my favorite Pokemon), a Lickitung, a Ryhorn, and several Clefairy in the last week that appeared in Nearby but where nowhere to be found and it's reeeeally starting to wear on me.

Re: the social aspect.

Apart from my battle against the Norwegian family, I had another run-in last weekend. A slot opened up in a Mystic gym in this park, so I jog on over there, only to find its prestige already falling. I look all around for possible culprits, and see only a little kid - like maybe 8 years old, tops - sitting with his parents, eyed glued to his phone. Once the parents got up and pulled him along, the damage stopped, and I resumed training. Just as I manage to pop my Flareon in there, this gaggle of shirtless bros wander up, all talking about being on Valor. I was completely outgunned, but I kept training anyway. I giggled like a child as they complained like "wtf why isn't the prestige falling further" and for some reason it never occurred to them to look around them. They won in the end, but not without frustration.

I'm beginning to understand that trying to defend a gym alone against a group is futile. So my solitary player strategy is pretty much just training up existing Mystic gyms, opening a slot, and popping one of mine in there, however briefly.

Also noticed another tendency about gyms (in my area anyway): high flow of traffic past the gym = greater turnover, while a higher flow of traffic to the gym  = higher level gyms. Like, a gym at a busy downtown intersection will be at Level 3 and change hands every few minutes, while a gym at a concert hall will be at Level 7 and be held by one team for several days. Makes sense as I think about it; it just never occurred to me before.

@ commander,  the order stopped making sence when they broke the tracker. I've been running in circles 15 minutes to find a Grimer. The behaviour of the "tracker" was exactly as you described. Rebooting the app sometimes showed or didn't show. This is due to the 10 seconds polling limit as well.

@ Tengu. Gym battles are a complete joke once you have 2-3 strong pokemon. A single person shouldn't be able to take down a multi level gym. And solo you'll never be able to hold a gym unless suddenly people back you up. And half of the time those backing up people are cheaters (GPS spoofers) who appear out of thin air. And you're wondering who put them there.

I've been able to take down gyms alone, but only if they're Level 4 or smaller. Defending gyms alone, however, is an exercise in futility (unless you wait for that golden moment when the gym is up for grabs, and drop one of your stronger defenders in there as a final Fuck You to whoever is trying to take over).

My current top Pok?mons include two 1000+ CP, two 800+ CP, and two 700+ CP. Currently powering up the lower ones on account of a Venemoth I found whose special attack does 75 damage; double that of a 900+ CP Venomoth I had.

But I need to collect more potions before I can do more training/fighting anyway, so I'm in yukkuri mode right now.

e: Speaking of GPS spoofing.

Even though I am guilty of using Pokevision in the past, GPS Spoofing and Botting is what really breaks this game as they require no effort at all.

So I'm level 21 right now and I have two Pokemon with capped levels, a Flareon and a Cloyster. Their CP is about 500 apart though. Cloyster has a little over 1100 CP, and Flareon has about 1600. Why is that? Does each Pokemon within a species have a different cap, or do species all cap at the same CP for a given level? Does this mean my Cloyster is horrible and I should never use it, or does it have some other trait that offsets the low CP?

Latest Update Notes (reddit)
They fixed timing EXP bonuses, are experimenting with new tracker code, and enabled a one-time name change. And curveballs have to be intentional, now.

And there are more text fixes, but this time there's two different kinds!
  • Minor text fixes
  • Major text changes

The new tracker is actually good: http://imgur.com/a/KXY80
Information from a random guy who analyzed the tracker for a bit

Also says the new radar has been added for "a subset of users" in patch notes. Im seeing a vast improvement and if you are not, then this could be why.

So wait, how is this supposed to work? I have a new radar but I don't understand it. Nearby window has been replaced by a "sightings" window and all of the Pokemon in it have a grass icon behind them now, but what does that change? Is it somehow now possible to actually use this to track?

Edit: For the first time ever my Pokedex is functional after this update, so that's something at least.
