That show seems like astronomical bs. I have a kneejerk reaction to moe war-related shows like this one because its the worst kind of 'cute girls do stuff' show. It just can't be justified inverse or otherwise. It makes no sense at all. ... When it comes to war stuff, I want there to be grim and grime. I want toys broken and wings clipped.

Agreed.  I very much enjoy war/survival movies, but it's not something I've seen a lot of anime do all that well. As was pointed out, a lot of the drama and tension is eliminated by lightly treating the subject matter, or distracting the audience and distancing itself with "cute characters".  Cannon Fodder had a very interesting take on industro-military slice-of-life.  Desert Punk was a kind of fun romp, and the manga version actually has some nice gun porn.  Marine Corps Yumi is more cute, but is really accurate in portraying boot camp.  Recently read Groundless, which is a fairly grim story following a sniper, and reads somewhat like a shonen.  I thoroughly enjoyed the submarine combat in Blue Submarine No. 6.  There are others, if one takes the time to sift through the chaff.

Sakamoto desu ga seems like the most entertaining this season.  Pretty good adaptation of the manga so far.

Why, of all animes this season, you'd think Kumamiko would do this? It's not 100% impossible, of course, but that would be a plotbreaker even worse than Samurai Flamenco, besides making it a completely different story. Madoka was moderately dark from the very beginning, kept going downwards and the surprising thing was it didn't stop sinking steadily into despair and Urobuchi.
Kumamiko though? ...Seriously?

By the way, if what you wanted is Madoka, Japan has actually got you covered.

I can't see it as anything other than some stupid story made by a middle schooler about this "cool dark and edgy boy" (excuse me) who is not understood by society, but eventually proves that he was right all along. Seriously.
Edit: Ah! I remembered the word. It's "cringy". That's how I wanted to describe the Zombie Train.

Hitoribocchi no ○○ Seikatsu is maybe the greatest manga you've never read. It's like an anti-Watamote (which I admit I haven't read extensively) where instead of cringe it's full of heartwarming, heartbreaking, and plain adorableness. The best word I've ever heard to describe this manga is "precious."

Seriously support this comic. It's so nice to see social anxiety comedy done right in a main character for once.

Every time I think a genre has been tapped out in creativity, something new pops up that I've never noticed before. Currently reading Helck, a fantasy manga about demons being misunderstood and overpowered hero characters. It's great because it's delightfully shounen, the tournament arc (which I hate, usually) was both the beginning of the manga, completely absurd, and didn't do anything tournament arcs typically did, and is refreshingly non fanservicey (the most fanservice laden character is the title character, an always shirtless slab of man beef). It also avoids the boring overpowered hero trope in a way different than One Punch Man: while OPM focuses on his goofy character and his being bored with never having a struggle, Helck has a different character as the primary main character, with her trying to figure out the mystery that is Helck.

Also, catgirl coffee drinking spy is cute in a boyish way.

EDIT: Man, rereading this manga reveals SO many hints and clues. This manga is well plotted and planned.

Of yeah Kabaneri is wonderful animation eyecandy. I really like the aesthetics for their devices as well. Imho the plot is abit meh but I wont air my thoughts until the season is over i guess.

I picked up the ggo arc of sao, the light novels, and was surprised by two things. One, I can actually read about half of it without aid and understand like 90% of it through context even if I can't read some words.
The second, I actually enjoyed sinon as a character more in text form than the anime. The whole deal felt less melodramatic and hamfisted if perhaps only because it had a lot more time to disperse the drama out over time and space in the book. Not that I didn't like her already before, if only more than that terrible waifu of a character that is asuna, but I definitely like her more now. It's a strange paradox of an irony that harem heroines are cooler when they don't fall for the mc but end up being shipped more because of it.

So I've started reading Murci?lago and... well it's certainly something. I find it a little odd that a manga so bloody seems to mainly run on comedy, but it's pretty entertaining so far.

as for anime, I've stopped following anime since the tv channels (that were available to me) stopped running them, somewhere between the 90s and 2000s, and since they were mostly long series, I mistakenly assumed that most anime shows are long like them (and thus didn't want to risk looking up anime on my own and being disappointed after watching so many episodes, and overestimated the amount of time needed to keep up with many anime by using said long-running anime as a basis). Though I still haven't followed any seasons after that, I've watched some few anime, however.

All this said, I'm going to follow this fall's season (don't even know for sure how to get started) because of one manga that I've read and liked (and it's still ongoing): Keijo!!!!!!!!
