@Tengukami: so Marisa is the streetwise snarker who don't follow no stinkin' rules to Reimu's straight-laced, by-the-books slacker, and together they solve crime? Two tickets, please!

Dude, Fightest and I plotted out a cop buddy movie starring Ran and Chen that had a very similar plot: Chen is a straight-laced, by-the-books, just-wants-to-do-what's-right officer of the law, while Ran is the jaded, cynical loose canon. Yukari is of course the weary captain who talks about how the lieutenant (never named) is "going to have my ass for this" and sighs a lot, who partners them up in order to teach them both a lesson. Together, their personalities clash, sometimes even coming to blows, but in the end they find their different styles compliment each other, and we all learn a little something about friendship ... and justice.

"Human history and growth are both linked closely to strife. Without conflict, humanity would have no impetus for growth. When humans are satisfied with their present condition, they may as well give up on life."

EDIT: Oh! Forgot to mention: in our version, Ran is always drinking something from a styrofoam cup. Whenever it's time to go somewhere - driving to the scene of a crime, leaving the precinct office, and so on - Ran always throws the cup out the window first. If there is no window, she throws it anyway.

This topic seems to have been derailed at some point.

Rumia's power is Manipulation of Darkness and Nue's is the ability to cause things to be mis- and un- identified. However, Rumia's second STB card has her turning invisible, her location unidentified, while Nue throws out clouds of darkness to simply make bullets hard to see.

I'm convinced Nue is EX-Rumia.

A fight that Reimu was reluctant to have, since they were the invaders, and Yukari wasn't even participating in. Also, shattering the moon apparently had zero affect on the Lunarians, since they didn't mention squat or do anything about it.

As for things some haven't noticed until now: powers are not absolute, nor can they always be fully controlled.
Canonically: Rumia has power incontinence, Cirno can't put out fires or lazers (at least, not as easily as normal Danmaku), Yuyuko can't kill people who wouldn't die from normal means, splashing Chen with water dispells her Shikigami power boost, Yukari can't gap to the moon whenever she wants, Keine can't hide history from Yukarivision, and so on.
Inferred or implied by canon: Youmu's concentration only applies to fighting, Komachi's distance compression is fairly limited (inferred from her SWR dialogue), Remilia's fate changing appears to require her to rename the recipient, Reisen can't invoke Lunacy as well as looking at the moon, and so forth.

Another one: many powers are too generic or vague to be discussed effectively.
Powers that are listed, but aren't used in any actual games or artbooks or the like (having not read all the books, I may be mistaken with some of these): Tewi's luck manipulation, Keine's full-moon history changing, Eirin's intelligence (I kid), Remilia's fate manipulation (mentioned to be rumoured to have been used in one article, suggesting it is tied to name fortunes), Ran's and Chen's black magic, etc.
Powers that are used, but little meaningful information about them is available: what kind of magic magicians can use (can Marisa only use lasers and stars and such, or can she do all kinds of wizardy things such as conjuration or alchemy?), Flandre's destruction (she can destroy a meteor, but what would happen if she tried on Mokou or Kaguya? Can she destroy Suika while she is dispersed, or a ghost?), Koishi's subconcious manipulation et al.

A few things for the curious.

Remilia's fate manipulation... yea, for that one, even the Scarlet sisters themselves give conflicting statements of how it works (In Bohemian Archive in Japanese Red, Flandre says with certainty that it's something Remilia can't consciously control. Remilia says otherwise). The idea that she changes one's fate by changing your name is Akyu's speculation regarding Sakuya (it's true that Remilia did change Sakuya's name, though).

If Flandre destroyed Mokou or Kaguya, they'd probably just rebuild themselves. However, it's true that her power isn't very well defined when trying to determine her ability to destroy non physical things.

Marisa's magic is primarily destructive, according to Perfect Memento in Strict Sense (though she is researching into things like "slaves" (IE, familiars, etc) and immortality).

Aren't Chen and Ran using their black magic when they fight you? Chen's Wizard Sign "Pheonix Spread Wings" has "wizard" right there in the name.

Chen has a card called Oni Sign "Blue Oni Red Oni". Does that mean she is Suika's sister? :P
I can't say whether or not they are using it, but I don't really see any mechanics in any of their fights that are markedly different from regular ones (eg, Sakuya using her ability to stop time), or bullets that are seperate from standard danmaku (eg, Cirno's ice bullets or the animal danmaku).

Well there you go, it must be black magic! :D
That's a good point actually. The only unique aspects of their battles I can think of is that they somersault all over the place, but somehow that doesn't suggest sorcery to me. Ran also had those weird rectangles in StB which, as far as I am aware, were never seen before and have not been seen again, but I'm not sure what to think of them.

I'm going to guess that by "weird rectangles", you mean the ones that are heavily used in this spell card, for instance.

Those "rectangles" are actually Ran's "aura", like Yukari's snowflake, Mokou's phoenix, and so on.  Look closely at Ran during pretty much any confrontation with her, and you'll notice it surrounding her, albeit much smaller than it is in the spell card I just mentioned.

Mamizou's second-to-last spell card is "Mamizou Danmaku in Ten Transformations. This is a reference to her "ten transformations," obviously, but I just made the connection that she creates ten copies of herself during the spell card. :o

Suwako is the only boss to get back to back survival cards.
Yukari and Mokou have double survivals for spells 9 and 11, Koishi has 2 at 5 and 9, and Suwako has hers as spells 8 and 9.

It's probably really obvious, but the "drive" in Desire Drive may refer to a motivational drive. I didn't think about that until now, I always just thought "drive" was just a cool word to throw into the song's name.

It seems Marisa's theme in PoFV is based on the title theme of SoEW.
Also Extra Love is based on Eastern Wind, and The Tank Girl's Dream is based on She's in a Temper.
And then Mai and Yuki's theme is based on Meira's theme (heavily, I might add).
PC-98 is full of this business.

and The Tank Girl's Dream is based on She's in a Temper.
I saw the relation on all the songs except for this pair. I don't hear any resemblance between the two, unless I'm missing something. :wat: Only song that The Tank Girl's Dream is based from that I know of is Extra Love, which is pretty much blatantly obvious.

Well it's hard to describe music with words (for me at least), but here goes.
She's in a temper starts off with that repetitive thing with 5 notes in it. Tank Girl kinda does the same thing but gets rid of the space between the third and fourth notes and just makes it faster.
Then She's in a Temper does a second thing after a bit, which is like 5 notes, then 3 which kinda build back up, then the same 5 again. If you slowed them down, but kept the three in the middle the same, I think it would sound like the main melody of Tank Girl (the part that's also in Extra Love).
Only a very slight similarity, but I'm assuming it's not a coincidence, seeing as they're themes for the same character anyway, and the stage themes were similar too.

The first part of SoEW's title theme (before the other instruments come in) can be combined with Mystic Oriental Love Consultation.

The "Mami" in Mamizou can mean "Deceiving Spirit".  Rearrange the letters in that to get the name of one.

So, we all know that Butterflies are symbols of Death in Japanese Culture, right? The thing is, I've always wondered why until I was walking past the local graveyard today.

Flowers in bloom, if I remember correctly, indicated that there is a recently dead soul possessing it, right? Now what do flowers attract? That's right. Butterflies.

However, this had me thinking...Yuuka, she's the Youkai of Flowers and yet she can create dimensions, obviously even souls need some kind of space in the flowers.

So, what does this all mean? For one, Yuuka certainly deserves her title of "Sleeping Terror", but then another thing, could it be that Yuuka's a major player in the cycle of reincarnation in Gensokyo?

Not all of the ones mentioned are really gone unnoticed for me until now.  Just that I never posted them here until now...

Surprised that Alice's occasional spinning in Touhou 7 didn't get caught on as a meme.  I always found it random and weird for her to spin like that.

Some people who know a lot about Yukkuris actually know very little about Touhou, and some even think that Touhou fans are weird.

I noticed that too.  I like to think that ZUN accidentally left in a line of code for boss-spinning from Chen when he made the Alice boss battle, then didn't remove it either because he was too drunk to notice it, or drunk enough to leave it in "for the lulz." :V

I just noticed a progressive similarity between Utsoho's stage theme and Shou's. Both are in an unusual time signature (Utsuho's is in 10/8 then switches to 3/4, Shou's is in 11/4 (Or 11/8 whatever they are identical in rhythm just different in speed)) and both have similar melodies and chords. Though the chords thing could be contributed to the fact that ZUN only knows like 3 chords. UFO stage 5 theme is Rural Makai City Esoteria, and Utsoho's stage takes place deep in the "Streets of Former Hell."

I could just be crazy though to see these similarities.

In her StB sprite, it's far more obvious, but in the EoSD version, she looks like she's doing something that must be REALLY bad for her back. :V
