Rogue Legacy thread (Action 'Rogue-lite', v1.2 out)
« on: December 19, 2013, 01:24:00 AM »
So I'm slightly surprised there's no thread for Rogue Legacy yet.

Rogue Legacy is an action packed platofrming roguelike bullet hell mashup crossover type game, in which you go through a randomly generated castle with one of 8 (9 with the secret class, 10 with the 1.2 update) classes, with ~30 different possible traits with the aim of avenging the previous heirs death.  Because you will die.  A lot.  But it's ok, because every time you die, the chosen heir gets to spend all your money and use all the same equipment you had!  There's upgrades and bosses and minibosses and all sorts of different stuff you can do to overcome it.  The 1.2 update released yesterday added the 10th class, 5 "boss remixes" (essentially superboss versions of the existing ones) and a few new traits: in addition to some balance tweaks, most notably giving Vampirism a boost in NG+(++++...).

I've been having a lot of fun with this game over the past week or so, managed to take a Barbarian through the entirety of NG+6 without dying, clearing the entire castle and downing every single boss along the way.  And then today I unlocked the 10th class by defeating all the boss remixes.  I can't be the only one here who's played this, right?

I'm slightly amused by the fact that it's the year 4000 in my game and they're still going at the castle with swords and armor...

Finished the game. Got all the items and achievements. Game gets hard pretty fast after the second loop. Final boss was well-executed. Crit gear is OP.
Spoiler:
Half-Dragon is cool but isn't that good.
Fairy Chests are a pain to get. Hedgehog Curse sucks. I love the controls and physics for the most part. Eyeballs suck. I wish there were more story bosses. Maybe a challenge mode. Maybe a bigger upgrade tree. Why does the level cap out at 507? It's uneven!!

Overall, good game, but getting everything is a PAIN!!

Personally I've had more success with the Dark set of equipment unlocked in NG++ and beyond-scaling Vampirism giving back 50 HP and MP per kill?  Never gonna die with careful Paladin/Barbarian play.  Additionally it frees up all the rune slots from mobility runes to be whatever you want them to be...I had them as Grace Runes to ease traveling through but I'm considering going back to a full set of Vampire runes to recover 100 HP per kill.

Why does the level cap out at 507? It's uneven!!
Because there are 507 upgrades and +1 castle upgrade=+1 level.

I just had a lengthy discussion with someone about super lategame builds.  Assassin with Slayer gear is the obvious solution, but what about anything else?  The class would need to have a defensive ability, so that rules it down to just Paladin, Assassin, Barbarian and Hokage.  Of those, Hokage has already fallen well off the pace due to its inability to crit.  Paladin benefits more from the Slayer equips, but crunching the numbers...Barbarian seemed to benefit more from the Dark equips and 5 Vamprism.  The numbers behind this on NG+29 with this person's stats were as follows:
1000/85% and 200/15%=880 expected damage with Slayer Assassin
220/50% and 650/50%=~440 expected damage with Dark Barbarian
The Barbarian would be able to restore 310 HP per kill and dies in about 5 hits assuming no healing.  The Assassin gets back 31, maybe 62 and dies in 2 or 3 hits.  It can take twice as many hits, but takes twice as long to kill things.  It can also recover a lot more HP, and due to the Dark gear's Siphon the Shout can be spammed while the Mist Form would need to be sparingly used.  It just seems to me that despite having to survive longer relative to the Slayer set, the added HP recovery makes up for it.

why did this thread die...

I'm just now almost done with the second level of Dungeons of Dredmor. I'll get to this one after I'm finished.

So many roguelikes, so little time.
