Yeah, that seems kind of weird to me too. Cirno's pretty popular in general, but despite her recent activity in 12.3 and Fairy Wars, it barely let her tread water. And I don't get why Luna Child is the most popular of the the fairies. Maybe it's the teardrop mouth.

As good as Eternal Steam Engine is, the SWR ending theme is the best one.

Hakurei Reimu as 1st place - 2058 Comments Total.
Definite Impression on her armpits - 131 comments include "腋" (armpit)
But, her biggest impact is from that she is a , 主人公 (main character) of Gensokyo - 392 comments

Izayoi Sakuya as 2nd place with 1791 comments
"Elegant" (瀟洒, count: 371) maid seems to be a big factor.
"PAD" count: 120... =_=;; *knifed*

Kazami Yuuka as 3rd place - Definitely a surprise. 1798 comments.
The Master of Sadist Indeed?! (ドＳ (do-S, meaning Epitome of Sadists) count: 104) Youkai Moe!

Odd, no one's translated the music poll as far as I can tell. Might as well do it myself. It'll save Furienify the trouble, as he needs the energy to sub the Spin Kappa manzai. I hope I did a good enough job, considering I used the Wiki a lot to help with the more "obscure" songs (aside from the fact that I'm not fluent in Japanese yet, I'm also not too familiar with most songs outside the Windows games, so lots of search bar abuse was had).

Couple of notes:
- "Older work" refers to any song from the PC-98 series.
- "Other work" refers to songs from the music CDs, etc.
- The poll didn't bother to specify where any song labeled as "older work", "other work", or "Seihou" came from, aside from the general descriptions you can discern, and at the moment I don't feel like going through the whole list to write down where they came from (1:30 A.M. where I am).

I wonder if there is people that are actually over 60 years old who players these games. Or if its just some dude who messes with the poll. And i'm surprised with how few people have beaten MoF/SA/UFO on Lunatic. Under 10% for all of them. Once again, just me having some idea that all Japanese shmuppers are really good.  :V

• While the figures do look low, have you considered just looking at only the Western Touhou Community itself? Would the proportions be approximately the same? Just so you know, I'd say that there are about a dozen (or x-and-a-half, at best but this is reeeeeaally stretching it) that have 1cc'd UFO Lunatic.

If people think the songs are only "decent" (or worse, but this goes against the point that I'm arguing), then they're obviously not going to receive votes because the 7 other votes are going to go elsewhere. The lower down the list you go, the murkier the ranking actually becomes. Honestly I'd probably only look at the top 50 or so before stopping and wondering why x is so low. This uh, "effect" also applies to the character ranking, again with the heavy restrictions on the voting.

Those are some REALLY good choices for music. A number of the ones I voted for are up there. I still think Septette is overrated, and there are a number of deserving songs that should be up there, but then again I always thought Remilia was overrated in general.

I just see IaMP vs SWR debates always leaning quite clearly to one side over here, when it gets brought up - if it comes down to the choice, it seems like the western fandom prefer IaMP (Or at least the people interested in these debates clearly do).  But, when put into comparison with the whole of the fandom, it's suddenly the opposite.  And I doubt that such a huge gap can be explained away purely by accessibility, either - it's a pretty massive gap, afterall.

I'd bet that part of the reason that debates are so one sided is because, having lost, SWR players aren't interested in arguing over it.  When I last saw a debate on the matter it was both hostile and technical and I wanted no part in it.

As for probable reasons beyond accessibility people prefer SWR and Soku, I'd put my money on options.  If you want to play Aya or Iku in a fighting game, you're going to play SWR or Soku.  If you want to play Cirno or Utsuho?  You're playing Soku.  You like having a hand of crazy supers that pop outta nowhere?  SWR or Soku.

Oh, I'd say SWR and Soku have much better story modes as well.  But I'm unsure how many people replay fighters for story mode....

I will seriously never understand what's so great about Cosmic Mind, as to me it sounds like the theme to a 90s mecha anime, but pretty much all the other top choices on this survey I can agree with. Nothing particularly outrageous jumps out, although I agree with Ruro, 100%, that Septette is overrated. And apparently lifted from Beethoven. Not that I begrudge ZUN that, I mean, if you're going to borrow, you may as well borrow from the best. But Number One it ain't.

I like how you people drop the word "overrated" while a vote is a singular subjective choice of one person. There is no media hype (aside from possible passive influence). Just because you think the song is overrated, doesn't mean it is.

In my own opinion, personally I think Border of Life is kind of on par with Septette. But to my own ears, Cosmic Mind shouldn't be better than Border of Life. But yea, that is how the voting goes.

On a serious note. Even if septette is derived from Beethoven, probably that is the cause for it being valued a nice composed piece of work. What is so great about Cosmic Mind? It reflects the story of Byakuren. At least that is what I feel and hear when I listen to Cosmic Mind. But it doesn't have the same emotions as Border of Life.

But yea, endless debates about song pieces. I am for one not really extremely technical on area of music composing and instruments. So probably things are different to me than it would be for a person who is highly educated in area of song composing and such.

What kind of surprised me and makes me wonder is: Where did the mass popularity for Yuka suddenly came from?

Overrated my foot.

For each of the characters and songs I prefer, I have come up with a number of reasons why I enjoy them as characters/songs by themselves and in comparison to others. It's just the way I learned to think. When someone tells me that X is popular without plenty to back it up, my immediate response is to think that X just isn't nearly as impressive as people think. I'm not a fan of a lot of different things, but when I'm told why someone enjoys something so much and there's plenty of reasoning to back it up, my impression is "this is just not my thing" instead of "this is something I just can't support". I have PLENTY of reasoning behind my choices, so when someone doesn't respond with a lot of reasoning for their own favorites, I'm not impressed. I don't want to associate with someone who enjoys one of my favorite characters exclusively for sex appeal. It's a base and shallow reason for liking anyone.

But for the record, I might love Byakuren, but I wasn't too impressed with Cosmic Mind, and there are plenty of characters on that list whose appeal has never been explained to me. Yuuka was quite a surprise, and telling me she deserves 3rd exclusively for 'youkai moe' ain't gonna do the job.
