Dwarf Fortress! And "Fun"!

Right, so poking the dwarf fortress community.

Do we have anyone here willing to explain how we had "Fun" Recently?

I'll start off with my fortress. i reset (Cheating, but oh well. i wasnt ready to have that much fun yet  :derp: ) it. but i was just starting up my military with my 52 dwarven population. A snatcher stole another one of my kids, oh well. well, about 5 seconds after he left, ambushers came over and attacked my dwarfs. the fun then started, as i sent my not so very well trained military (just starting) into battle, with no armor and the weapons they brought.  :3

Needless to say, all 5 of them died. then they went and slaughtered everyone. that was quite the "Funny" evening.

Anyway, I've been trying to get into Dwarf Fortress, but there's so much of a learning curve that I get frustrated trying to understand everything, and I lose interest. :/

Sorry. yeah, that was bad, but im scratching for 10 as it is so my friend will quiet down.

...so whats the biggest problem you run into? bad starting locations or so?

Well, no-- I do have the Bentgirder tutorial and I've been trying to follow that, but there's just so many menus and commands and procedures that need to be memorized just to keep everything going, and it's got me flustered and overwhelmed. I think I'd enjoy the game quite a bit if I could get past that, but I've been trying for nearly three years now to get into it ^^;

Yeah, i can relate a bit. lot of trial and error, and someone was watching over my shoulder this fort, and somehow it all worked out. I'll be damned if i can get the fortress to survive without traps. XD

Though, it just takes your first successful fort to handle things... if it helps, the butcher workshop and the hunter are your best friend. the other one is the dwarven crops. booze those up, and then you should be fine. (Food < Booze.)

...sadly, the game only gets more complicated. *Struggled though the military screen*

My last fortress died when I forgot to place an obisidan block in a vital place and ended up having my superweapon flooding the fortress instead. It was horrible.

The ol' boatmurdered scenario huh?
Everyone's had one of those I think.
I tried this too, as my friend Ian here knows prior to having joined up here.

Unfortunately, you and I are in the same boat Matsuri, too many controls and commands to memorize.

Oh damn. flooded with the fort with lava eh?

And boatmurdered didn't flood itself. it flooded a caravan, then was flooded with miasma...

Either way, boatmurdered became synonymus with a fortress crashing down via some amusing oversight or slipup.

that slip up being melting a human caravan on accident with lava. then they murdered each other.
