On topic of unexpectedly good music, how do you like your HEAVY METAL in 8-bit?

How do you like your HEAVY METAL in 16-bit?  :D

Zero (Ace Combat Zero) definitely fits the bill for epic orchestral video game music. Especially when you're listening to this while flying a fighter jet minutes before a nuclear missile is launched.

If you're into chiptunes, Main Stage Theme (Devil's Crush) gets a spot in my rankings as BGM suited for any high-speed, blood-pumping action game. In my opinion, being in a pinball game just doesn't do it any justice.

S.S.H's remix of Wish (MIME) is an awesome version of the PC-98 original, and is part of my YouTube "battle music" playlist.

Gourmet Race (Super Smash Bros. Brawl) also stands as one of the best remixes of already good music, as well as a perfect track for your motivational gaming mix.

What? No mention of The Greatest Jubilee?

There... much better now.
Why... why must weak humans destroy their world? Why can they not preserve that which they see so dear to them? Why must all life perish before immortality?

OH IS IT WILD ARMS O'CLOCK NOW FOR THAT IS BEST O'CLOCK
I will forever have a soft spot in my heart for the series of Old Western games that turn into silly sci-fi at the end.  And so, a sampling of some of my favorites from the series.

Wild Arms: Into the Wilderness how could I not include this one it's like the law or something

Wild Arms Alter Code F: War Demon (Boomerang Flash)

Wild Arms 2: Battle vs Lord Blazer

Wild Arms 3: Losing The Inescapable Nightmare, an Unending Reality

Wild Arms 4: Over the Wind

Fire Emblem Awakening ~ I've Never Seen Someone Fall so Gracefully
The first time I cried at a video game over the story. FE:A doesn't have an AMAZING, TWISTY AND PSYCHOLOGICAL story, but let me tell you that the way everything is aligned will make you cry a little sometimes. This music is what fucking did it to me.

Fire Emblem Awakening ~ Don't Speak Her Name
Urghhhhhhh this piece's so emotionallll

Fire Emblem Awakening ~ "Ha ha! Yes, it will take some getting used to!"
This song in particular is just so great. It's basically the idea of JRPG x Strategy RPG x Dating Sim. If you've never played FE:A...

You either
  • don't have a 3DS
  • don't like Fire Emblem
  • don't like JRPGs in general
  • don't have the money to spend on a million video games
  • don't have a soul the patience to grind relationships to see what people say
All of which are understandable. If you don't like grinding or (strategy) JRPGs in general, FE:A will not be your thing.
My profile picture is whimsy until I feel like adding something else.

Enjoy.

I bought the FE:A 3DS bundle, so I know what you're talking about, dood. :3

Drakengard 3: "This Silence is Mine". Even has the lyrics (not translated), so you can sing along!

JAM Project: "Babylon". Credit roll song for SRW 2nd OGs, iirc.
I need an option, a reason, and some hope.

I think it's time to get in on this, haha.

Vs. Zero - Megaman: Network Transmission
I used to play the crap out of this game when I was younger. This is probably one of, if not, my favourite track from the game.

Vs. Trainer (Kanto) - Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver
I still remember the chills I got the first time I heard this, haha. It'd been a long time since I'd played the originals since my saves had been corrupted, but I love how they remixed this.

I'll Face Myself (Reincarnation Version) - Persona 4 Golden
Man. This gave me chills too when I first heard this during the
Spoiler:
Marie
battle in P4G. This just made the battle even more awesome in my opinion.  The Persona series is full of awesome music.

Alchemist With a Wavering Heart - Super Robot Wars: Original Generations
I've played both games for the GBA, but I still hope to play the Playstation 2 version someday. This song sounds way better in the new version too compared to the GBA version.

Apparently, Thomas the Tank Engine isn't one to take crap from anyone.

The Impact version of that song still haunts my days. Every time she'd show up in that, the stage would get exponentially more frustrating (Impact is a frustrating game due to questionable design decisions).

OGs made a lot of old versions of songs really good. And I like how just about everyone got their own theme. Most of the cast having "Born to Fight" in OG1 GBA was painful. Seriously, dood. Go play OGs. It's fun! And then play 2nd OGs, too! PLAY MORE SRW! EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU! :3
I need an option, a reason, and some hope.

8-bit nostalgia strikes again.

Power Blade 2 - Stage 4
Duck Tales 2 - Bermuda Stage
Darkwing Duck - Bushroot Stage

For a bit more conventional stuff, have one of the reasons why I like the original Max Payne - sequel doesn't have anything this high on adrenaline.

Fire Emblem: Awakening ~ Id (Purpose)

Have some pseudo-Latin goodness. I've been listening to nothing but this. WARNING: SPOILERS FOR FIRE EMBLEM AWAKENING IN COMMENTS.

Fire Emblem: Awakening ~ Don't You Dare Mock my Sister's Words! (Piano arrangement with sheets)
Rainymood version; now with the rain that kicks the emotion in

This has so much more meaning emotionally if you understand the reason for the title. This is the song I show people when they think "Ech, JRPG music doesn't fit in any other situation!"

Video soundtracks are my favorite type of music, and pretty much is the only music venue I entertain myself with.  I don't have time nor desire to search for anything else, since during my free time I am always playing video games, or looking for video games to play. :3

Ar Nosurge for PS3.  One of the biggest best surprises of an RPG I ever played, in story, characters, and music.  Battles aren't too shabby either.

Intro music:

Oh nice, another Ar Nosurge fan, they are so hard to find! :D I like almost all of the music from what I've been hearing so far. (I'm new to the Ar series mind you) I read the entire backstory and enjoyed a lot of the Ciel Nosurge songs as well.  I've never seen characters well fleshed out in all my years of RPG gaming.  I think Sarly would have to be my favorite character (so far) though, she's so smart, and so sweet.  Ion's Genometrics are driving me up the wall, hearing "Dummy!" every minute!  Arghhh!!  But I did find out I have to solve other Genometrics before solving hers, apparently.  Guess she is the unique one.  Other than that, she seems sweet, but she seemed more likable in Ciel Nosurge so far.  I'm not too far in Ar Nosurge though, so I do expect some improvement.  Nay grew on me a lot though, and I got past her faults once I knew more about her dark past.  Err, getting off topic. . .

Anyways, Elder Scrolls Online has some pretty good music I found out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40Csug-yFIo

I don't own the game, but I love the music I've been hearing from it.

About time for me remember the soundtrack that makes Sega Genesis sound not like a gaming console, but like a full-blown synthesizer!

Streets of Rage - Introduction
Streets of Rage - Fighting in the Street (Stage 1)
Streets of Rage - Moon Beach (Stage 3)
Streets of Rage - Keep the Groovin' (Stage 4)
Streets of Rage - Attack the Barbarian (Boss theme)
Streets of Rage 2 - Go Straight (Stage 1)
Streets of Rage 2 - Dreamer (Stage 3)
Streets of Rage 2 - Slow Moon (Stage 5)
Streets of Rage 2 - Never Return Alive (Boss theme)
Streets of Rage 3 - Fuze (Running. Time limit. Gas. 'Nuff said.)
Streets of Rage 3 - The Poets 2 (Pier. Sunset. BASKETBALL!)
Streets of Rage 3 - Boss theme

Remixes made for Streets of Rage Remake are nice too, but I consider only one track to be truly superior to its original.

Streets of Rage Remake V5 - Max Man (Shiva's theme from SoR2)

EDIT: A few more notable tracks from Remake.

Streets of Rage Remake V5 - Keep the Groovin' (VIOLINS!)
Streets of Rage Remake V5 - Fuze
Streets of Rage Remake V5 - Max Man II
Streets of Rage Remake V5 - Store Points (Remix of a part of Spin on the Bridge, SoR2 stage 2 theme. Yes, there's a remix for the full theme, but I like this short piece more.)

EDIT2: Been enjoying Spin on the Bridge lately, so it's fair if I mentioned it here as well.

Streets of Rage 2 - Spin on the Bridge (Stage 2)
Streets of Rage Remake V5 - Spin on the Bridge

One well-known game with amazing OST in general is, of course, Banjo Kazooie. Pretty much all tunes are great and memorable, and that recurring key theme which in minor variation pops up in basically every single theme of the OST binds everything together nicely, while in the seperate worlds themself the instruments of the BGM change fluently depending on which region you are in. Just an overall great experience, and one of the OSTs closest to my heart. Therefore it is hard to pick favorites, but to name a few:

Click Clock Wood, Spring Time
Freezeezy Peak
Mad Monster Mansion
Final Battle

Another N64 game with great music (which also featured themes that fluently changed instruments when you progressed through a dungeon, hey!) is Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. Some very nice themes here, for dungeons, open fields, and, of course, giant mecha karaoke.

An SNES game with a great OST that I haven't seen mentioned here yet is Sparkster. Starting from the upliftingly heroic Stage 1 - Lakeside and diving straight into heavy guitars with Stage 2 - Steelworks, it is just badass through and through... and then you get launched into space.
Just a phenomenal OST from start to finish.
Old Danmakufu stuff can be found here!

No mention of the Xenoblade Chronicles soundtrack? Sadness. The whole soundtrack is great, and this is coming from someone who's never played the game. Here's some of my favorites:

Just in case, "shmup" is short for "shoot-em-up", the genre that ZUN-made official Touhou games belong to, you know. I have to say that good music seems to be as important as good gameplay for them.

Ah okay, always thought Touhou's genre was called "bullet hell", never heard of "shmup" before.  I have definitely played my fair share of "shoot em ups" though. :)  Thank you for the explanation, I am grateful.

Suppose I should toss a song out since I posted twice already.  From an old school shoot em up game no less. ;)
