TH10, 11, and 12 were the only games where I first saw the characters on my first playthrough, so there was maximum surprise value there mind you.

Nothing in 11 was too lulz worthy, but I remember laughing when I first encountered Kanako and her ZOMG big purple hair. That, and I wasn't prepared for how plain Murasa looked at first. I thought ZUN might have run out of ideas or something.

I half-loled, half floored by awesomeness when I first saw the Caution symbols and heard the alarm. I was afraid my characters would get cancer.

Practically every character from MoF looks like they either got a stroke or fell out of the crib one too many times. That was a bad art year for ZUN.

the only characters i got to see "in person" were the chicks in UFO, since i didn't play the games until after1-2 months of discovering it.

This. Although since it was my first time playing Touhou ever and I wasn't really thinking about the art (and I'm still in that boat that thinks ZUN's art is charming in all the games in one way or the other), Minoriko is the only ZUNart in the series I cringe looking at.

Also, Cirno was a pretty big laugh fest on easy mode my first run through or so. Of course, I never actually watched any videos of Cirno's spellcards beforehand, so I never noticed the blindspot. The laughter was directed at me that time.

Actually, EoSD was my first Touhou game too, and I hadn't had any prior Touhou experience, so I didn't know what anyone looked like. If anyone made me lol though, it'd have been Sakuya. "Wait, why am I fighting a maid?"

And in more recent times, Suwako and Unzan. That hat, those fists...
