I always wonder why Komachi has coin for her bullets and it seems this is the reason:
Charon, in Greek mythology, is the ferryman of the dead. The souls of the deceased are brought to him by Hermes, and Charon ferries them across the river Acheron. He only accepts the dead which are buried or burned with the proper rites, and if they pay him an obolus (coin) for their passage. For that reason a corpse had always an obolus 1 placed under the tongue.
Those who cannot afford the passage, or are not admitted by Charon, are doomed to wander on the banks of the Styx for a hundred years. Living persons who wish to go to the underworld need a golden bough obtained from the Cumaean Sibyl. Charon is the son of Erebus and Nyx. He is depicted as an sulky old man, or as a winged demon carrying a double hammer. He is similar to the Etruscan (Charun).

Close, but not exactly. From the translation of Komachi's PoFV profile on touhouwiki.net:
Quote
When a person dies, their spirit must cross the river to the Netherworld. It is Komachi's duty to ferry the dead across the river. The width and depth of the river changes depending on her mood. Also, if someone has done too much evil during their lifetime, they may even not be able to cross the river.

A shinigami judges one to be good or bad not by the amount of crimes, but by money. That is to say, not the money that the deceased may have had while they were alive, but rather the total amount of those who yearned and missed that person from the bottom of their hearts. By the way, judging the amount of crimes of the dead is not Komachi's job and would be handled after crossing the river, but that's a story for another time.

After death, when she requests a passage fee from them, people tend to be surprised since the money they have on hand doesn't correspond to their own assets, but on the assets of his or her surrounding friends.

Very rich people tend to be despised during their life, and are astonished to see how little they have after death.

Komachi always demands those she guides to pay all the money they have, and anyone who hesitates to pay the full sum is dropped into the river midway through the journey. The river is made infinitely wide, and the unfortunate spirit is soon consumed by huge fishes and sea dinosaurs which were extinct in world of the living.

It's more a Japanese/shinto (?) thing rather than Greek, though the similarities can be seen in the concept of the Ferryman of the dead.

I don't know exactly why Nue would even claim it's her true form. If she's been tricking people for X many years and nobody has seen her true form, wouldn't claiming that it's her true form likely be a lie?
I mean why would you just admit it. Better to leave everyone confused.

I think it's because she wasn't planning on letting the heroine live. She was most likely under the mindset that if anyone saw her true form she would be sealed underground again, so even if she claimed it was fake she felt the need to take action.

Exactly what I was thinking.  To quote the pre-battle dialogue with her (with Reimu):
Quote from: Nue Houjuu
But now that you've seen me, I'll have to bury you
so I can go back to being an unknown.
But still, she says this after the fact, so, like Drake asks, why come out and reveal her true form in the first place?

I kinda see it as sort of a taunt.  IIRC, Nue appeared before the heroine to "congratulate" her on unsealing Byakuren.  Afterward, she likely planned to kill the heroine, since she had already started to figure her out (by breaking one of the "UFO"s and chasing after the Seed of Unknown Form that emerged from it), and revealed her true form, since it would be the last thing the heroine would see anyway.

Or maybe she says that to everyone who sees her so they all have different stories and confuse each other more.

I always wonder why Futo has a boat in her spell cards: maybe this is the reason??
Nigihayahi
[Nigihayahi no mikoto] (Kojiki)

A kami claimed as ancestor of the Mononobe clan. According to Nihongi, Nigihayayi descended from heaven in the "heavenly rock boat," took for wife Mikashigiyahime (younger sister of Nagasunehiko), and thus fathered Umashimade no mikoto. The account in Kojiki is similar, except that Nigihayahi is described as marrying Tomiyahime, younger sister of Tomibiko, and thus fathering Umashimade.

During emperor Jinmu's eastern expedition, the local leader Nagasunehiko opposed the Yamato leader, since he claimed to follow Nigihayahi, whom he called an offspring of the heavenly kami (amatsukami). Nigihayahi, however, killed Nagasunehiko and submitted to Jinmu. Both Kojiki and Nihongi record that Jinmu likewise recognized Nigihayahi as an offspring of heavenly kami. One theory interprets Nigihayahi as a child of Amenooshihomimi, but he was likely a kami that originally appeared in a different legendary lineage of the Mononobe clan.

Not to mention this:
Water invigorates the vital life energy called ch'i. Feng shui advisers recommend water features in homes such as aquariums, ponds or fountains to create ch'i. Just by being on a boat, you are one step ahead of the natural flow of life land lovers must create with decorations.

Just realised something tho...

Heng'e (姮娥) is the Moon goddess who was originally in China. She was the wife of Houyi (2100 BC), who shot 9 sons of the Heavenly King to save the Earth from burning. (The last son is now the Sun)  Heng'e later drank the Immortal Elixir and flied onto the Moon. Unable to return, she stayed there and became its goddess.

The funny thing is, here, her name contains the word 姮 means Heng'e herself, but sounds the same as 恆 : always, eternal.
The other word, 娥, means beautiful girl, the moon. Both of them was usually compared to a jewelry, especially the Moon in poetry.

"The Moon shines like a jade." They said.

So I combine those words and look at what I found: Eternal Beautiful Jewel. And bash me if I'm wrong, but that's the name of our doctor: Eirin.

So true.
With Touhou fanon is pretty much accepted as canon because there isn't really much to draw from canon to describe any of the characters, unless something is stated explicitly like Yuyuko's foolishness in IN with the eating thing.

Not really something I haven't noticed ever, just forgotten.
A few years back, I read through a few character profiles on the wiki and noticed that it said sakuya can control time AND space.
Looking back at my memories, I seem to only remember seeing fanworks where sakuya can only control time.
I was almost convinced that she could only control time until recently.
I had a dream where sakuya turned the SDM into an apartment building in manhattan. (or "Scarlet Devil Manhattan Condos")
This lead me to question whether sakuya can really control space or not.
Looked back on the wiki and noticed it said only time under abilities.
Then I scroll down and see
Quote
ZUN commented she can manipulate space (such as the interior of the Scarlet Devil Mansion) as well as time.
So she can manipulate space, but I haven't found any fanworks concerning it.

ZUN commented through Akyu that she's the one that expands the SDM and manipulates a hammerspace for her knives and such. Akyu speculates that slowing time is akin to closing a space and speeding time up is akin to opening a space. But, her ability is still to manipulate time alone. She does not have "manipulation of space" even if through manipulation of time she may be able to change some spacial aspects.

In addition it's also said that even if she could reverse time, you cannot undo things that have already happened, so effectively there is no reversing time. Or rather, space is not a function of time despite being related to it.

Reading this I thought that it was surprisingly like Yuyuko... Maybe Yuyuko's eating habit is based on this?
iirc, yuyuko did not start as a hungry ghost.
It's possible some fan came across that article or similar, it reminded them of yuyuko, and called yuyuko a hungry ghost.
Did not pay attention to PCB dialog, too many bullets.

Pretty sure the Yuyuko eating Mystia meme started that trend, though ZUN later made it canon. The origin itself probably came from that though.

It is likely that was its origin, since hungry ghosts aren't that uncommon in Japanese and Chinese mythology.

In Futo's official portrait, besides the two strings that flow on its own behind her head, you see five sections/parts(?) of the strings on her nice hat. She's a Stage 5 boss.

/well I guess it isn't crazy but I just realized this after I decided to try and draw Futo's iconic pose and whatnot.

Is this supposed to mean something, or are you really just trolling? Maybe she is a little flat-chested, but not all of us have a problem with that.  :3

Anyway, I was playing PoDD, and I noticed that one of Yumemi's attacks is almost identical to Shinki's opening attack, and that Kana Anabarel (or whatever her name is) does something which was clearly copied by Yuuka in LLS. (Yuuka also uses this in PoFV)

Nah I just find Sakuya somewhat boring or overrated. Also how did you get the PC-98 games? I downloaded them but I can't figure out how to play them. Your guidance would be much appreciated.

And then a sacked Sakuya told everyone that Flandre was one of her ex-bosses
