Too bad, we still have to wait for longer for the Nether Update of the Aether mod, as it will come in a later patch. Oh yes, they are planning to make the Nether just as lively as the Aether.

I'll begin by saying that I only understood a fraction of what was described in this blog entry, and if you also have no experience with coding, you'll probably be in the same boat. That said: Notch's latest blog post, mostly sharing an email from one of the developers of a long-standing plugin which modifies the height limitations of Minecraft. Here's a short bit taken from near the end, most technical details aside.

Quote from: The developer who sent Notch that email
I have to say that the game was *remarkably* performant with the Y height pushed up to 256. I imagine 512 might not be too bad on my beast of a machine, either, though 1024 would be pushing it. That said, one of my short-term ?just for fun? goals is to see if I can?t get the Nether to populate from 0-127, the main world from 128-255, your Sky dimension from 256-383, and then that one group of modders? new dimension, the Aether, from 384-511. That would be epic.

Alright, so this guy is strongly implying that, yes, that sky dimension Notch made a passing mention of about a month ago is definitely, absolutely going to be in 1.8, which will probably be a large feature of the adventure update. However, with the way it's mentioned as a completely separate thing from the Aether, this leads me to believe that it really is just that: a completely separate thing from the Aether. I'm expecting grass, dirt, stone, snow biomes, water, lava, blah blah blah, the usual stuff you see down on the ground, except in floating island form. And with less trees.

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Well, yeah, one guy did strongly imply that the sky dimension is going to be in 1.8, but what does he know? It's not like he's a part of Mojang or anything, so your assumption that the sky dimension will be in 1.8 is pretty-" BAM. Ah, good, you're back from watching that, and possibly rewinding it to watch everything before that, too.

Alright, so let's face it: despite all this, there's no way of disproving that they didn't simply find all the right settings to get this uncanny lookalike of Notch's aforementioned sky dimension into Minecraft through the use of something like the PhoenixTerrainMod. As it stands now, this is all just conjecture, but, personally? I'm hopeful.

Now we have a reason to slaughter chickens, and increased map height might be a possibility in the future. I also noticed that instead of an armor icon, we have drumsticks, are they adding hunger? I don't think I like the idea of constantly having to find stuff to eat, it might take too much time away that we could spend building and exploring.

Just punch the pigs that spawn outside of your base and eat as you go.

Not that I think it's a particularly good mechanic ???

And what could be an experience bar beneath the health/hunger icons!

Wait... How will armor work, then? Will it have a more 'numerical' look to it? Like... in the tooltip. It says the armor name, then +X armor beneath? Or something?

Nice...more hyped for this update! (especially taller maps - but what will it mean for older ones? ???)

As for drumsticks...I think it's for hardcore mode, where regular sustenance is likely required. As for armour, I bet it's that gauge that you guys thought was the experience bar.
However, if it becomes part of the standard game, at least Stuffman and Strafe can add "<player> pulled a Shady_Ghost" (for being too poor to eat) as a death message. :V

I honestly hope hunger is part of the regular game, but... More forgiving than, say, that Survivalism mod.

Fuckin' hunger depletes so quickly in that :\

Hunger would be great on SMP as well for adding a bit more challenge to the game. Can't go without those porkchops, bread, etc. anymore when going around!
I hope that we only have to eat once every MC week, though, for if the eating schedule was, for instance, 48 in-game hours (like GTA: SA) it'd get pretty annoying very quickly, and we'd be wasting time gathering food when we could be exploring or building.
On the other hand, it also adds onto the MC black market (pretty much non-Iconomy or similar economics - most of the trades that go on in vanilla servers) and helps expand player roles in vanilla and RP games.

I wouldn't mind if it was every handful of days, provided that:

Some food is stackable

Food restores a decent amount of hunger.

Plus some foods alleviate more hunger (bread), while others boost hit points better (porkchop).

Also, if that bottom bar really is for experience (and probably levelling up as well) foods could also affect stat growth rates...examples below:
Raw Pork/Fish/Red Apple - nothing.
Cooked Pork - Increased attack
Chicken - Increased defence
Bread -  Boosted stamina for sprinting
Cooked Fish - Increased lung capacity
Mushroom Stew - Improved vision in night, dark areas
Cookie - Increased jump height
Golden Apple - Reduces damage by 35% for 10 minutes. Effect cannot be stacked.
Cake - Speeds up eating players' actions for 10 minutes. Effect cannot be stacked.

...that'd be nice to see, but it would also create a divide in SMP between new and old players. Also it wouldn't be surprising to see level caps - puts a little strategy in your cuisine! (though there should be some way to reset that in-game)

Red apples, red apples... Perhaps a 50-100% buff to damage done with a bow and arrows for 10 minutes, due to how rare they are?

If that bar turns out to be the new indicator of your armor durability, in our current system, we have ten armor icons, each of which can be only half an icon, so twenty, essentially. After counting those in the bar, there are only eighteen. Perhaps it's something different after all, or maybe it's armor, but Notch is doing something to change how it works by ten percent?

Heh, they should also give a nice boost to all stat growth rates assuming they can only be found through current methods.

...hm, if it is armour that is a good point - he could be reworking the system, perhaps by having half-parts of the gauge as well so that we have 36 instead, better measuring armour durability. Or we equip meat slabs for armour. :V

Also read a bit on the "hold-to-charge" bow mechanism...entire team is Huntsman Sniper! :V

Permadeath and leveling.
`

Sounds terrible. All I like to fhe suggested is Height changes.

I haven't tried 1.7, I was put off by not knowing if I could play it online and the fact that pistons are nerfed anyway.  :V

Knew it. More RPG elements in Minecraft.
Well, I guess strategic food, level caps, and whatnot may be a part of the game after all! (well at least in Adventure mode)

Also, Terraria-style bosses are welcome. I love a good boss fight.

Am I the only one who hates all that shit?

What's different about Minecraft is that it's not some RPG, it's an open game where you're free to gather stuff and build stuff with the stuff you gather.

Sure there's some survival elements, and they add some fun, but that's secondary. Adding grinding, hunger, all the useless crap other games arleady have is taking away from what makes MC different, and making it more like yet another RPG.
And permadeath is just stupid.

I don't think it is. Notch talked about an Adventure Mode update a while back, but he's just calling this the 'Adventure Update'.

They're implementing a Creative Mode that's basically what we have now, though.

Wait...I thought that the Creative Mode would be more akin to Classic's style. Our current one would remain Survival, and these addons would be more for Adventure.

First line. Creative Mode is mentioned about halfway down.
