It's probably a little different for me when it comes to parents, being...well, fuck I'm a man now and they probably wouldn't give a shit about what I do with my time. I did, however, show my dad Touhou a while back out of curiosity of what he would do once he started playing it. He didn't seem to care too much about the entire cast being loli or girls (save for the fact that he "didn't want to be fucking cute" while playing the game itself). The only thing that seemed to matter to him was playing the game and shooting the hell out of shit that got in his way.

Course, I didn't show my parents the other stuff that Touhous associated with namely all the awful porn and other forms of questionable material. I'm usually never open about me being immersed in NSFW stuff and I keep anything regarding that stuff a well locked secret from parents and relatives that I know wouldn't understand. It's hard enough being the black sheep of the family, the last thing I need is my own flesh and blood giving me shit for something like this.

I don't care about any one else's reaction because, they're not family and I don't have to spend my life being stuck with them.

To be quite honest, there is a given percentage of the Touhou fandom that is just excessively creepy and awkward enough that they probably deserve, or at least should see coming from a mile away, the flak they might get for being into the series, especially if they don't play the games enough to show other people they mean business. I mean really. Not talking about the games in this instance, but you see a screen filled with girls of questionable ages doing something stupidly "cute" with colors everywhere and squeaky pikopiko unicorn rainbow barf music being played in the background and all that sorts of crap and people really do have to wonder. It isn't shallow-minded to question it; to label people who won't immediately "understand" you as "shallow-minded" is shallow itself. Touhou has a bajillion characters and no-one's going to get that everything is from one game series, nor that it's even a game to begin with, nor will they accept it just because they know it's based on a game. Besides, if you aren't actually into the games, you have no excuse since 80% of the fandom isn't even about the games. The offline behaviour displayed by a lot of Touhou fans isn't normal, even among anime enthusiasts and friggin whatever. What people will get immediately is that there's probably porn involved at some point, and no matter how much you may try (or not try) to deny you're interested in the porn you can't seriously think you're going to convince anyone. Newsflash, 99% of the world is not going to see things your way, whether you think confusion, misunderstanding, intolerance and judgment towards you is "shallow-minded" or not.

What I seem to be noticing (however little information I have) is that there's no actual explaining going on when you talk to these "shallow-minded people" (even if they are, quotation marks needed), just "i'm not a pedophile really, here look at somebody else's replay of the game so I don't look nearly as strange". Even if you can't negotiate with some of these people, explanations are outright better than denial.

If I play a piano arrangement from a Touhou song, my mom might ask me if it's from "that game". I answer yes, and will actually go load up the game and play her the music as comparison. She's not going to confront me about it anytime soon as I don't act odd enough to warrant it, but even if she did, I'm not going to deny there isn't something really strange about this fandom, and there's no way I'd be able to explain it without going "yes there is a lot of porn, i'm weird, deal with it". She knows I've made friends over the internet and have connections to many countries across the globe. She knows I get mail from weird places, and she knows I play weird games and watch weird shows. I may not know what some of you are talking about with such radical peers/parents, but I don't exactly see anyone complaining about Touhou flak being very open-minded about people that aren't them.

Kinda to support drake, but I have little experience people judging me in extreme bad ways because of my interest in Touhou. You see, I talk about it, and I try to get them into it. I start with the music and the games. I don't have wallpapers of scantly clad lolis or anything like that, and even if I did, I'd be sure that they saw the game/music FIRST.

On a less serious or potential rage moment, I used to play Touhou music at work or have the games running replays or whatever, just to give me something to listen to (I work a gas station alone in the middle of the night so my boss doesn't mind me doing this).

So there I am with dBu's dream battle remix playing, and the comment I get from one of my customers is, and I kid you not:

"Is that Children of Bodom"

To this day I cannot possibly fathom how that conclusion could even have been reached.

Doesn't sound like it to me. But if you're in a car and aren't listening to it directly, the surroundings might butcher the dynamics of the music, making the main keys sound similar to the lead guitar, which, when combined. Actually DOES sound like a main melody you might hear in a CoB album (not really CoB specifically, but its lead guitarist, for example Synergy's "suicide by my side" kinda has a similar sound to the lead guitar"

He kept saying how it was "fucking sick" that I had something so gay next to my name, and that everyone else probably thought that I was a raging homosexual with no shame

How can a little GIF with a GIRL indicate a GUY as being homosexual? How is it even possible to make a connection there? Did you take this discussion into more depth then? I know your parents are simple-minded but sometimes even simple minded people can be made to face logic.

I was once accused of being a pedophile because i was openly admitting to like the Touhou characters. By school teachers and class mates. You'll have to explain to your parents that there is no chance that you are gonna go around molest people or making out with other guys just because you play a game that just happens to be about girls. Especially since they are something as harmless as a bunch of simple shooting games. Not a rape simulator.

Eck, some of the posts in this thread give me the impression that guys'll get more negative reactions from parents due to liking Touhou than girls. So far, I've only been told that it was 'cute' that I played those 'wacky boyish computer games'. Double standard fail.

On topic, a friend of mine bought a six dollar rubber key-chain of Flandre and complained about how expensive it was for the rest of the day. The next morning, she bought a PS3 and a 42 inch plasma T.V.  :/

Drake does make a good point about some fan-related behaviors inviting ridicule. The only two things I'd add to it would be:

1. If you show Touhou to someone and they don't "get it", aren't interested, or are turned off by it, don't assume this person is "shallow", please. Maybe it's just not their thing. Different strokes for different folks, and all that.

2. Anyone calling you a pedophile or assuming other negative things that are just not true about you because you enjoy Touhou are the sort of people whose opinions don't matter anyway, or at least shouldn't matter to you. Idiots exist, film at 11.

Hahahaha, shit this reminds me: does anyone else have a hipster sibling who has no real appreciation for music? was once listening to a piano arrange of Iku's theme and my sister was laughing at me not for the fact that it was a poorly disguised chip tune, but because of the fact it was a piano arrange. Seriously, you think you're too cool to listen to an instrument everyone agrees to be a timeless classic?

My dad has seen me playing shmups a few times whenever I'm home for break.  One time he watched me playing EoSD for a bit and said something along the lines of "How can you even find something like that fun?  It just looks like a bunch of work."

In all honesty, he has a point there. :derp:

Um... the piano is pretty much the most beautiful instrument ever.
No, it's the fourth most beautiful, after the violin, cello, and human voice.  Close enough though.

Probably like how gay guys have so many female friends without having a 'girlfriend'. Don't ask me to justify something that stupid though, I'm not gay and I use Reisen in 90% of my avatars.
Stupid world is stupid.. Everything has to be sexually-orientated, a boy can't play a game with girls, and I'm guessing a girl can't play war-games without some kind of criticism from someone. (This coming from a 15-in-a-month -year-old, obviously something's wrong. With the world.)

I don't really consider the voice to be an instrument in the traditional sense, but I would definitely say that I prefer a good voice over any other instrument.  Other instruments would depend on the particular song and time in question!  But I do have a fondness for the piano.  I can certainly appreciate violins and cellos too, but it's also easier for me to dislike a traditional string instrument than a piano.

I also use a lot of girls for avatars. Except now that i use a vulture. But that's more likely to indicate that you like girls instead of being gay. I guess some people just are stupid.

There was this time once that someone thought i was a girl because i used female avatars exclusively. You basically can't judge a person's gender or sexual orientation on an avatar.

The most beautiful instrument ever is a kazoo.

The avalanche for condemning people to homosexuality for showing some unmanliness possibly stems from the thought that Unmanly Men have a propensity for other unmanly behavior, such as being sexually attracted to other males.

I get this from one of my friends too. He saw me playing IN once, and a couple of pictures, and immediatly decided that it was all a Hentai game series. Somehow. And to the point that my teacher was calling it that once. There's also the occasional comments about me playing "that weird japanese shit", though I got that from before Touhou too...

Beyond thinking I'm going to get RSI from playing it, my parents don't care. I honestly have no idea how you can get so worked up about someone playing or having fan works of this and i would have thought a guy having images of girls was no call for concern...

One thing that does bother me about the Touhou fandom in general (kinda going along with what Drake said) are the people who need to realize it's a game series, not a religion or a way of life. When people make fun of it, sure, nothing wrong with defending it, but calling them "shallow-minded" and stupid is just as immature as they're being.

This especially applies to the music. People saying stuff like "they'll never know what true music is" or "I refuse to listen to any non-Touhou music now," you're just ASKING to be made fun of at that point. Yes, the music is nice and some of the arranges are really cool, but don't shove the music in everyone's face and rave about it and expect to walk away without anyone laughing at you. :/
