Edit: I was bored, so I started thinking about what makes your b&w pieces so captivating instead of doing something productive.
*Terms used liberally in an incoherent train of thought, i.e. talking out of my butthole.*
So, b&w drawings can come in 3 flavours:
1. Simple sketches (may appear plain, flat)
2. Shaded sketches (gives appearance of depth)
3. Merp-level (Merp).
1. Black is used to define boundaries, and give definition and shape to the subject. White is used as filler.
2. Black begins to encroach on white's territories, evicting whites in the process of creating depth, and giving better definition. White is still filler, though some are now homeless.
3. Black and white have achieved equal social(?) standing. Black and white are both used in giving definition, and in being filler. The magic happens when black is used as filler, since black negative space is a lot more interesting than white negative space. When I see white space, I think "oh, there's nothing here, it's empty". But with black space, my brain goes hyperactive, and tries to make sense of it - trying to make out faint details, extrapolating details from what I can see, and ultimately going haywire, seeing whatever I think I want to see. Kind of like how your mind terrifies yourself when you're in the dark as a kid.
So in that sense, it's kinda fun!
