| Alfred F. Jones:
If you could go back in time and change any one historical event to have the outcome of your choice, what would it be and why? Favourite book, if any? Do you think Pan-Africanism is remotely viable, or a good idea, or what? |

Don't really want to get into the details of what I do wish to change. --- Quote ---Favourite book, if any? --- End quote --- Terry Pratchett stuff is always a good answer. But to give a consistent name, I'd say Frank Herbert's Dune --- Quote ---Do you think Pan-Africanism is remotely viable, or a good idea, or what? --- End quote --- It's about as good an idea as Marxism (going by what I understand of both of these terms). Molefi Kete Asante came up in one of my classes last year. From what I could gather, the guy is just trollbait. IIRC he wanted African tertiary institutions to discard Western (Greek and European borne) knowledge and teach from African root knowledge. Now that would be great if African knowledge had the depth of Western knowledge. I also see mention of it as a kind of unification for all Africans. Now on that point, it's simply not going to work. This video, while pretty hilarious to a South African, demonstrates exactly what will go wrong. The guy is a Zulu, he thought he was being called a Venda. These are separate ethnic groups and fiercely proud of their identity. If you attempt to group all of Africa under one label, the infighting for individualism means nothing will come of it except a front. In South Africa alone, racism and xenophobia is pretty set in despite all the imagery of a Rainbow Nation. As I mentioned before, you'd need the death of at least 2 generations before any real change in the culture of people will make space for tolerance. |

Hope everyone enjoyed the week. Just because there's no thread for it, you're still free to ask stuff via PM or on IRC. |
