I bet a competent programmer could reproduce the entirety of Minecraft in a month and make it a hundred times more efficient.
Yeah, make it in something other than Java. If it was ported to C++ or something similar, it would already be a hundred times faster. Notch chose Java because of compatibility, though - pretty much every modern computer can run Java. Also, remember that Notch is just some random dude who happened to make something that caught on. He's not a professional, although from all the money he made with Minecraft, I guess you can call him one now.

Yeah but it's not just Notch now though, he hired a team of programmers too. Apparently not very good ones!

Also I'm pretty sure stuff made in C++ works just fine on macs as long as you use opengl and other non-proprietary stuff.

Same for Linux, BSD, what have you.

However with C++ binaries have to be recompiled per platform usually, and furthermore OSes tend to interpret things differently (looks at Windows' terrible OpenGL performance on non-workstation GPUs), so often in those languages code is specifically written for optimization for certain platforms (eg. Cube 2 on Mac OS uses a hook by default which addresses a bug in its OpenGL implementation).

With Java, the implementation job is handed over to Oracle, and its rather frequent use of JIT compiling allows developers convenience. Apparently Notch and Mojang opted for Java partly for that reason. It allows them to focus on features rather than spending time making coding optimizations.

I take it all this talk of the bugs means people have tried 1.6 here then.

The worst thing for me is my map was huge, and I never used doublecart boosters. all legit, using powered minecarts. so with the fixes chosen, how the fuck did he end up breaking powered carts? if they push a minecart, the minecart will just randomly act like its had a handbrake engaged at some point.

maps are dog ugly and utterly useless for showing other people your maps and navigating - what i'd hoped they'd be good for.

I backed up my minecraft jar before updating, I'm glad I did. before I play next, I'm putting the 1.5 jar back in its place. 1.6 is dreadful.

So, I heard that floating islands were awesome.

You heard right.

I wish minecraft had some (reliable) method of air travel, so you could have a Skies of Arcadia-esque world!

That made me have to get some screenies.

so I think I posted my old map, well now I've upgraded it to this map.

And I got some upclose pictures of my fave bits, so -

Double decked spawn tower factory. Massively effective, sit at the end and watch the creeper dust roll in. Doesn't spawn too many spiders for some reason, but I've got a spider trap somewhere else anyway thats pretty good.

Approach to the train station inside that factory, There are two platforms in here for two seperate lines. This is coming into the main one.

Friendly mob spawner. Horrendously ugly and horrifically uneffective. at some point I might TNT this to clear some space, which is a terrible shame its so crap when it took so much material to make. It has killed a few cows, chickens always escape it, and the catcus grinder I made to catch sheep doesn't catch sheep. (and lava would mean they wont drop any wool) so its pretty useless.

Kinzoface because manditory. Should have took this during the day, really. But you can only see it properly while traveling on the rail line.

probably enough pictures - I took more but its mostly more of the same, or they weren't very good. Maybe I should get some of the new structure, or upload a video or even just my maps. I can't record so well because my computer sucks.

FAKE EDIT : plane mod you say?  :V

Yessir, I did.

Ah awesome! Saves me from continuing to look. I found this yogscast of it, which is hilarious. I skipped a little in the build as they sure take their time over things, but yeah - when they get it going it is worth it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brGhO6ZfBjo

got a bit more into these guys recently, they blabber a bit but are good once your used to them.

I'll have to get this planes mod thing going soonish to give it a try.

Say no more! Not yet updated for 1.6.5, but the dev's reliable, so it will be within 24 hours.

Oh, right! I really should have remembered to add that.

To everyone who downloaded 1.5 from me: Press the "x" key once you're in-game to disable the xray mod when you log in!

To Stuffman: Also, this. :3

I'd say wait a little bit, because I don't think half the mods are updated to the current version yet.

http://minecraftworld.wordpress.com/

That should also intrigue you, the guy posts about mods and texture packs and shit all the time.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait, I~... Thought that 1.6.6 was due out NEXT week..? I thought we still had at least five more days... Ah well. For those who can't be bothered with the link:

Minecraft Beta 1.6.6

Unless there are any emergency things to fix, I won?t do any more updates before 1.7. Going to E3 on Saturday.

I will be bringing my laptop to do some development, but I won?t be able to do much testing.

ONWARDS TO THE ADVENTURE UPDATE! *holds up sword, poses dramatically*

1.6.6:

+ Added a new use for bonemeal
* Changed the material of glowstone from ?glass? to ?stone?. This means you need a pickaxe to get resources from it
* Made glowstone drop more loot
* Made the recipe sizes for creating cloth blocks and glowstone blocks smaller (2x2 instead of 3x3)
* Re-introduced unlimited FPS, renamed the option again
* Fixed beds not working very well at all in SMP
* Fixed destroying a boat spawning the player too low, causing them to sometimes fall through the ground
* Boats float up to the surface quicker
* Boats falling down into water lose their vertical momentum very fast
* Removed Herobrine

Oh, well that's all well and goo- waitwat. :|

Notch messed up the patch AGAIN, instead of being deleted, Herobrine is like three times more active. God that guy is a pain in the ass.

... :V

Anyway, are the CPU issues *actually* fixed yet? Is this version workable in multiplayer?

From the people who brought you the Cowboy theme, Old Asia theme, and Underwater themed worlds I posted a while back, it's Giant World.

Spoiler:
The giant playable piano is probably the most amazing thing built in that server.

See, for that exact reason, I always place torches on my right. That way, when I want to get back, I follow whatever path has torches on the left.
