Technically, you see Amaterasu in SSiB when Yorihime summons her. And we know from CiLR that she lives on the sun.

Personally, I think Sanae is more than enough :3

I would love to see more variation that Gensokyo can offer. It's the Land of Fantasy after all.

- ancient gods like Susanoo and Tsukuyomi.
- Konohanasakuya-hime, since she appear in front of mokou in CILR.
- other lunarians beside Toyohime and Yorihime.
- Mima and Shinki.
- a youkai that specifically only appear in summer and dissapear in another season.

Ittan-momen would be nice. A wolf would be good, and not a wolf tengu like Momizi. Seconding the kamaitachi mention also.

Speaking of the Prismrivers, I'd like to see more boss battles where you're fighting more than one character at a time. In PCB, I thought it was really cool how you could fight one of three characters, each with differentiated danmaku attacks, and how they all teamed up for the final spell cards in a spectacular last attack.

As for types of youkai, I'd like to see dragons. Doesn't necessarily have to be THE dragon that created the boundary of Gensokyo, but maybe there could be several characters, each a different type of dragon with a different kind of ability.

Or how about, going off of the previous idea I just mentioned, having a Stage 6 battle where you face off against several dragons. I can taste the epic already. :3

Don't think that'd make a whole lot of sense without some kind of actual reasoning for it beyond simply being 'foreign' for the sake of it. In the end the only difference it would make is that they'd have an English sounding name, but otherwise they wouldn't be any more unique than the existing characters.

And I guess something humorous like the youkai that haunts public bathrooms or that one youkai that moves pillows. An obsessive youkai that collects pillows and even has the ability to manipulate them...too bad she's ass terrible at moving them/stealing them.

Danmaku battles to her are pillow fights. A true symbol to how non-lethal a danmaku battle can be.

Although if she hits you with a water pillow you might get a concussion...I learned that the hard way in my youth.

Indeed, almost every one of these would be fun to put in Touhou some way or another (despite being the 'worst' mythological creatures I can easily see them fit in with Touhou).

I recently read what horrible creatures exist in Japanese lore and I have total faith in ZUN's abilitys, but damn, some of these really creep me out!

Some I would not want to cross paths with...

Bake-kujira (Undead flesh rotting whale thing? Whoa!)

Rokurokubi (Girl with a long neck? Yikes!)

Futakuchi-onna (Strangely, this one reminds me of the pokemon Girafarig, but it's just me)

Qilin (This one doesn't bother me as much...)

If we're going on about wanting non-Japanese lore in a Touhou game, maybe some meso-american flavor would be interesting. It's not as overdone as many others.
Maybe not a winged serpent, but a warrior girl with a jaguar-head helmet, feather cloak, and obsidian-jagged battle club would be pretty awesome.
Also, an axlotl yokai could make for interesting character design.

I think an Amanojaku sounds pretty plausible, and the fact that they tempt others makes it easily usable in a plot.

... Would it be too much to hope for a dinosaur youkai?

Given what Rinnosuke said about dinosaurs in CoLA, I kind of doubt there will be any dinosaur youkai. I suppose it's possible, but only if ZUN decides that Rinnosuke was wrong.
