EDIT:
Now to catch up on Level E, GoSick, and Wandering Son.
"The original Phryne" being
.
This might be a stretch, but I thought
Is that a twist that's been done before? Sure has. But the way there was a beautiful ride, and it felt actually a bit heartbreaking rather than contrived.
The series, to me, didn't have a central message, I don't think. It played with the dynamics of organised religion, ideologically-motivated violence, and technology creating a social disconnect (not a new theme in anime), without trying to take a side one way or the other. It was hard to sympathize with the Temple or with LM - both sides did terrible things, and had terrible people in their midst, as well as good ones.
What was fun about that was what it did to Clain, who's confronted with wanting to keep Phryne away from the Temple, but also being horrified but the things LM does, while not really having any other options.
The "ecchi! ecchi!" got old pretty quick, but they weren't enough to make me dislike this series. The pace is pretty relaxed until the final episodes, but I felt it delivered.
