Well yes, even this little bit of fan service was alright. For some reason it doesn't feel forced or wedged in there. Phryne suddenly stripping and jumping into the water just demonstrates again that while she's supposedly a captive of the LM, she's really just along for the ride, and she reminds them of this frequently. I mean she was peeling potatoes at this point in the story, being scolded for taking too long, when she up and decides to go swimming. I love this character for that.
The moral ambiguity thrown into the show is really something. Who are the good guys, really? The religious faction, making people literally live in a world of illusions? The "freedom fighters" combating the Temple, who have no qualms with gunning down unarmed civilians? Maybe neither one of them are the good guys. That'd sure be close to real life. Mari Okada, the screenwriter for the series, has
a number of great series to her credit, so it's not surprising that the writing holds up as well as it does. And the series being written by a woman means it's OK to enjoy the occasional blips of fanservice, right?
Oh, and the little twist at the end of this episode was priceless.
Also, caught up on eps 6 and 7 of Level E. Amusing little arc in the middle of the general plot. Nothing mind-blowing, but it definitely had some funny moments there - as you'd expect if five high school kids were suddenly transported into a shoddily-made game done in RPGMaker.
After finally forcing myself again to watch the boredom that is Bakuman, J.C. Staff seems to have taken the advice from this episode and make something that's actually remotely interesting other than ROMANCE DREAMS ROMANCE THEY LOVE EACH OTHER ROMANCE. slowpoke.jpg I know.
Yeah, things are definitely picking up now, and getting back to what I thought was the original point of this series - showing the unforgiving and ruthless underbelly of the world of manga, anime and voice acting. The sappy-ass romance in the middle of the series was very trying on me, but now that we're in the home stretch, with five episodes to go, the writers have thankfully gotten back to brass tacks. Good on them.
