Zun's trumpet?
« on: November 12, 2010, 06:57:17 PM »
I've been looking for the distinctive sound of that trumpet you hear all the time in ZUN's music. I'm sure it's called "Romantic trumpet", and it comes from a Edirol SD-80 synthesizer. Does anyone happen to have that sound? Of course, I'll have no idea how to use it, but that would be a good resource for many people I know.

I looked at this post, but I didn't get anything much from it.

Then again, I could go to 2ch to find it faster, but my Japanese is limited, so whatever.

I have a soundfont with said trumpet. Note me and I'll send it your way~
I've evolved a lot. When did I make this account again?

Note.

THFont sucks absolute shit. It is terrible and is not a direct rip of the SD-series; it is only a cheap imitation created in a group effort to emulate the sound, but it's still nowhere close. Using soundfonts in general won't get you the sounds you get straight from the source, the MIDI hardware itself provides much, much better everything over using a soundfont. And before you ask, "ripping" the sounds itself from the SD series is illegal, which is why it's come to this in the first place.

But if you're okay with a free soundfont then whatever.

Hmm. How popular is the SD-80? I might be able to find one easy.

Or if it's quite old, is there another synthesizer which still has that same sound?

Yes, it's a pretty old module.

IIRC all of the old SD-XX modules had it. The most recent one (the SD-50) either doesn't have it.

I ended up extracting the THFont Romantic Tp, but it was really, really bad. I expected it to be at least decent, but this sound starts really silent, but then really loud, and never shows any variation in volume. (at least on my AKAI EWI)

I needed something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5yRDZMxDqQ

or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uolg47KO-fk

or this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imP1Tv4zLxY

But probably this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5K-_JVuFEg&t=0m4s

(The last one uses a synth that can vary in volume, which I'm not sure the if the SD-80 has. The variation in volume is the defining characteristic of a wind controller, though.)

So, do any of you guys know how they (or any other music circle at COMIKET) got that sound? Did those circles all buy a SD-80 after all? ($1000, damn) or did they do something else?

How does this soundfont work? When I use it in FL studio it doesn't produce Touhou sounds, but generic midi-like sounds.

Sorry, noob here.
