I thought it was just another one of those fan openings people liked to shit out now and again.

Pretty much.

Wait, what? This is an actual anime project?

I thought it was just another one of those fan openings people liked to shit out now and again.
This... this is what I thought too.

Judging from the video description that actually IS a trailer of the Anime Tenchou project. Except there is no Anime Tenchou in sight in that trailer. :/

Guess we were talking about one and the same thing the entire time.

Wait, never mind, I missed the "unrelated to this vid" part. They aren't one and the same project.

That's because it's not the trailer for the Anime Tenchou project. The video description says:

If only Memories of Phantasm actually were an up-coming anime series. That'd be pretty amazing. Alas. But then WHAT WOULD HAPPEN TO THE FANVIDEOS GUYS?!?!?

OH NO! NOT THE FANVIDEOS!  :ohdear:

(Except that some studios actually started to remove MADs because of copyright, that was my fear I was talking about earlier, but that doesn't really concern Touhou, right.)

Let me sort this out, because I didn't expect the conversation to get this... pointless
In a series of P's and C's, what I think about this whole situation. It has nothing to do with the memories of phantasm vid or whatever.

P1: Touhou is interesting, but low in quality and very incomplete
P2: Interesting things get attention (duh)
P3: Fans of something try to fix whatever problems their object of admiration has, and in a universe as loose as Touhou, they can let their imaginations go amok
C1: The faults of Touhou as a whole are, really, what makes it so interesting, because they encourage fans to create their own content

P4: A Touhou anime comes out. High in quality and very complete.

What happens?

Depends on whether it's official or not.

Unofficial version:
Just another
Spoiler:
awesome
fanwork. Business as usual.

Official version:
Quote from: everyone
<insert character here> DIDN'T GET ENOUGH SCREEN TIME BAWWWWWWW
It gets disowned, and then business as usual.

What happens?

This question has been answered, repeatedly: Nothing will happen. People made doujin manga while there was an official Touhou manga, authored by ZUN himself, being regularly released. An official, high quality anime will not "do" anything to fanvids - people will continue making them.

Also:
Let me sort this out, because I didn't expect the conversation to get this... pointless

You were asked point blank what you were talking about in the OP and your response was "I don't want to clarify, I'm being mysterious, ufufu", so don't be surprised that people went off on their own tangents.

First of all, even the manga had a lot of faults. Not saying that the anime won't have any, but...

Also, more importantly, compared to anime, manga is a lot easier to draw, you know. There are a lot of works, that, in my opinion, are far superior to the official manga. My fears are that a professionally made, high-quality anime might discourage people from creating fanvids simply due to how well-done it is. I think that's a huge part of derivative work - to make something better, and more unique. But how can a handful of fans go up against an entire Ufotable, when it comes to animation?

Ah well, I guess you're right. I wanted to see where people would take this.

Fanvids are pretty easy to make if you know what you're doing, too. If you can draw, and have the software, you can make them.

Based on what we know of official v. fan works, official and highly polished works FEED the doujin community; not the reverse. You could swing a dead cat over your head and hit examples.

I mean quality.
and as for the second point, I think this would be quite different in the case of Touhou. I mean, it's the only thing (I know of) that stretches so far yet is based entirely in doujin. And, like I said, I think that in the case of touhou, motivation for the creation of fan works comes mostly from the desire to make something "better." If you have a professionally made anime... It kind of puts a cap on it.

Do you have evidence for ... any of this? Because you're making a lot of assumptions here. The motivations to make fanworks are as varied as the fans themselves. Some want to make something better, yes. Others just want to take part, others want to add something of their own, knowing full well that it doesn't approach the quality of the original. Others are creating different plotlines are stylistic techniques. Others want to use their favorite Iron Maiden songs. Others want to make works excluding/including their most hated/loved characters.

There are so many, many reasons why people make fanworks. A cursory glance at the doujin community shows this to be the case. "High quality puts a cap on fanworks", though, doesn't seem to be highly reflected by the reality, at all.

"Human history and growth are both linked closely to strife. Without conflict, humanity would have no impetus for growth. When humans are satisfied with their present condition, they may as well give up on life."

Evidence? Of course I have none. I'm not an otaku anthropologist, for God's sake.
It's just a theory I find plausible, and it's not like we're having a serious debate - just tossing some ideas around. :P

I'm asking you to consider Touhou in and of itself.

well I don't know about you, but when I write fanfics I don't do it to be a better writer than the original creators or the other people who write fic, and I think that a lot of people who do fanworks don't approach it with the mindset you're talking about either

really the whole idea seems really defeatist to me.

I'm not a fan of that song (I've heard far better ones from the same group), but it probably wouldn't be so bad if the video editing weren't so horrible. Each scene has nothing at all to do with the music, and in some areas they use the exact same animation more than twice. The lyrics have nothing to do with the story being portrayed. This is all on top of the fact that it is a Touhou video which, despite having a huge selection of native music to choose from, has a mainstream(ish) song from an unfitting genre tacked on. (No touhou remixes in that genre would have fit either)

And yes, I watched the whole thing. If it weren't for the fact I'd already heard the song on Pandora, I probably wouldn't have lasted so long.
