>"Eh, well..." Meiling shrugs. "Spent a while chasing each other around the grounds. Don't really mind, though. Not exactly a lot of new faces around here. Nice to see someone having fun."

>"Nah," Meiling says, shaking her head. "Still got a gate to guard and all that. Boring job sometimes. ...well, almost all the time," she adds, under her breath. "But it's still gotta be done."

>"Oh yeah, I'm sure," Meiling nods. "Still, I have my standards. Besides, they're still just kids. Better to let them do their thing."

>Head inside!

>Meiling nods back at you. "You go have a nice day now."
>You head across the grounds and enter the mansion. A pair of maids are currently busy cleaning the grand staircase in the foyer, their diminutive stature making the job look much more labor intensive than necessary.
>"Have you given any thought to our next action?" Ran asks.

> How much do we know about the events involving Byakuren and her release?

>Ran nods. "It would certainly be ideal if that were possible."
>You are aware of most of the main points. You know that the geyser created by Utsuho's power broke the Palanquin Ship and its inhabitants out of the underground, and that they gathered the fragments of the Soaring Vault in order to unseal Byakuren from a remote corner of Makai. You are aware of Nue's role in hindering their effects, as well as the true nature of the ufos. You are aware of Reimu, Sanae, and Marisa's attempts to investigate.

>"I've also been pondering what to do about that rift when the time comes. I want to take someone with me this time, as an extra set of eyes, if nothing else."

>Ran nods again. "As I said, with the entrances we have available to us, at most two people can travel through, and they would likely be separated once they emerged on the other side. Still, reuniting should be possible through more mundane means."

>"The question is who to bring, you or Mokou."

>Mokou frowns. "Eh, probably better off with her than me. A city with a million people in it sounds like about the last place I'd wanna be." She casts an eye at Ran. "I might blend better, though."
>"I do have some passing knowledge of the outside world," Ran says. "Yukari sometimes referred to matters thereof, although she did not speak of it often."

> "If we got to some more viable rifts, such as the one under the lake, would it be possible for more people to go through?"
> Ponder, in our world, did we know of any Kappa creations that would allow swimming in deep water without worry of air?
> "Do you think it is possible that Makai, or where the Celestials live may have a rift or two?"

>"I would need to examine it in person to be sure," Ran says, "but that is a distinct possibility from the readings Patchouli has marked on this map."
>You have little familiarity with what devices the kappa have made in your own world. However, considering that the kappa themselves are already aquatic, such a creation might not have been a high priority.
>Ran ponders for a moment. "I suppose it is possible, although I don't know that the phenomenon would have manifested outside Gensokyo proper."

> "Well, random idea. The Kappa are great inventors, it is possible they have built something that would allow those that are not aquatic to act underwater as if they were aquatic. That would likely be our best chance at getting to the point at the Lake, that or Patchouli being able to help through her magic."

>Ran muses. "Patchouli does have great skill with elemental magic. It would probably be prudent to ask, even if she is somewhat... perturbed by the generosity this situation has ended up requiring of her."

>"The rift there was comparatively new, actually," Ran says. "At least for one of its magnitude. This was why I said it merited investigation in the first place."

>"Alright. I wasn't sure how long they were good for. Then, I suppose we should ask Patchouli again."

>Ran frowns. "I'm afraid I can't give a strict measurement of their time of usefulness, either. It's not an entirely predictable thing and has quite a lot to do with the lattice of space where they occurred. Some geometries produce more enduring conduits than others. This is why it would need to be examined directly."

>You nod, then proceed towards the library. You find Patchouli, as always, seated at her desk, and currently perusing book on no doubt some esoteric subject.
>"I assume you have something else to request of me," she says, turning a page in her book, and continuing to read. "Perhaps I should put a sign up: 'Magical philanthropy. Inquire within.'"

>Patchouli's brow furrows. "I suppose you have no idea of the principles through which it achieves this communication, either? Presumably such bindings would not be able to cross the gap between dimensions to their original targets, but the process by which they were originally created may still be scrutable from the tome itself." She stares off thoughtfully.

"I think she said the book was related to some kind of device that allowed the communication but...  She didn't really go in depth about it."

Apparently, Thomas the Tank Engine isn't one to take crap from anyone.

"I think she said the book was related to some kind of device that allowed the communication but...  She didn't really go in depth about it."

>Patchouli frowns. "I suppose such an incantation might require a focus outside the tome itself. Is this implement a singular artifact, or do multiple such ones exist? I think I would be quite interested in acquiring one for study."
