>Try to trace the barrier's creation. Given its longevity, this has to be a notable event.

>You think that it went up at essentially the same time as the burst of energy that caused this fissue. You can't tell for certain who did it, given that the history of the entire area is veiled beyond that point.

>Can it be traced to one person, or one casting? Can we determine what went into the creation?

>Determining the exact mechanics of its creation would require a greater understanding of the subtleties of spellcraft that you possess. But it was only erected a single time, and has remained since then.

>Can we determine things we'd normally be able to observe; such as spell components?

>You can't generally sense minutia such as that, or the internal mechanics of an event in such a detailed way. For example, you might be able to tell that a house was built at a certain spot, and that a family lived there, but you wouldn't be able to tell what kind of wood it was made with, or how many nails were used, or a precise schedule of construction.

>You think the barrier may actually simply be a side-effect of keeping the two timelines separate at that one point. You... honestly aren't certain what would happen if it were removed. The two timelines might collapse together. Something worse might happen. It's outside of your experience.

>You're not certain. It might pass right through. It might bounce off. Something even stranger might happen. You're really just guessing at this point.
>Maybe 50 feet or so into the air

>Does the fissure seem as active as the recently opened one in the forest?

>No, it's much like the shrine was. Mostly just a very large pit, with a very faint sheen to parts of it. You don't think there's any immediate danger.

>You don't feel like taking any mercy for granted tonight.
>You descend. Eventually you reach the bottom, a couple hundred feet down. It seems to be made of the same sort of uneven rock as the Hakurei fissure. You notice nothing else unusual. Well, other than the fact that you're in a giant hole carved out of the landscape.

>take a closer look at the base of the energy pillar

>Since the pillar is still a significant distance from you, you decide to fly in to have a closer look. As you approach, you get a better sense of the size of it; it's probably something close to 30 or 40 feet in diameter. The surface of it looks flat and stable, although the depths of it seem to shift and scintillate slightly as you look at it. It's quite opaque, though, and you can't see any hint of what might be inside. You also don't see anything unusual around the base of it other than the pillar itself.
