Yes, that's on the Touhou wiki page about Gensokyo, but it doesn't expressly say, "ZUN chose the date of the sealing of Gensokyo to coincide with the introduction of paper money to Japan." It's just a factoid some random wiki user put in there. Correlation is not causation, in other words.

It seems there are a bunch of humanoid males, it's just that they don't get much screen time. I wonder if there's any in-story reason for all of Reimu's adversaries being female though.

I think I remember ZUN stating at one point that males don't quite have the nack to make the beautiful type of danmaku that most the Touhou cast does. Since the spell card rules seem to require that sort of finesse, that could be why we haven't seen a male character. Wonder what a male character would be like in Touhou that could work with the spell rules and still be able to hash out some sort of living in the human village or elsewhere. Kinda interesting thought there...

ZUN himself is male and made all those spellcards, which is a bit of a contradiction. I think that he decided to have an all-female cast just because he wanted to, then made that up as an excuse why. (Nothing wrong with that, though.)

I remember reading someplace that it's because females are in touch with the anima, i.e. spirits and magic and h4x and etc.  That's why they can {read minds, manipulate fate, shoot giant magic lasers}, and that's what makes them remotely interesting or powerful enough to be in million-bullet wars.
Considering this sort of thing has always been a part of animistic religions, this actually makes sense by ZUN standards.

I'm surprised this question didn't come up:  How did Byakuren get spell cards?  Mary Sue Reimu (maRei Mu) canonically created the system long after Byakuren was stuffed into Hokkai, so...
