RPGs on the PSP: Are they worth it?
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:42:43 PM »
With Persona 3 Portable coming out two days after my birthday (July 4th), and a PSP remake of Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete coming up in less than a week (thank you, Game Informer), it's got me curious. Are there any worthwhile RPGs on the handheld that one should spend money on? I plan to get one before P3 Portable comes out.

Don't mention Half-Minute Hero, please. Having to grind under a 30-second time limit does not appeal to me. >_>

Meh, I wasn't too hot on Valkyrie Profile myself... But maybe that's just me.

Also, get Disgaea, although you should already have it so I shouldn't have to recommend it really.

But if for some strange reason you don't have it, get it.  As soon as possible.

PSP RPGs worth playing:

Crisis Core

Persona PSP

P3P

Valkyria Chronicles 2

Star Ocean 2 Evolution

Tales of Eternia PSP

Valkyrie Profile PSP

Disgaea/Disgaea 2 PSP

FFT PSP

All I can think of off the top of my head.

Tales of Eternia PSP
wut

No, seriously, Eternia was pretty terrible.  The rest of the list is good though (even if I don't care for FFT).  Might want to add Jeanne d'Arc.

I liked it enough. ... Well, I liked the undub.  The dub was awful.

Never played Jeanne d'Arc.

I have the PS2 version, but I don't play it very much...Heck, I played like, once and I was baffled by all the sandbox-esque character customization, so I really couldn't, like, make an informed decision on what classes/characters I should use. I was also a bit afraid I might miss items (blame my experience with FFTA/FE), so I didn't really give it a chance to make a good impression on me. I'll consider the PSP version on the count of it having extra content and such.

Jeanne d'Arc was all right, but I really didn't like the system in the end. I do recommend it if you're into a henshin style retelling of Joan of Arc.

Avoid the PSP port of FFT. The game is programmed to intentionally slow down to 15 FPS during most animations making the game unplayable.

Truly spoken like someone who has never played the US port of the game.

Spell effects are shown slower on the PSP version - probably 25-30% slower - but this is made up by the effects taking less time to load than the PS1 version of the game.  In addition, the stages and menus also take less time to load, so the whole thing actually balances out in the long run.

It takes very little time to get used to, and overall you're losing no time playing FFT:PSP over FFT:PS1.

In addition, the revised translation, extra stages, extra characters, new plot details, and other features really make the game shine over the original.

revised translation
"High born moppets is still moppets!"
vs
"Then I guess we must fight.  Eeeeaaaaarrrghhh!!"

I dunno, both have a pretty strong case.

where they were supposed to burn her at the stake.
Quit after it since I just didn't feel like trudging through the game.

It's like every single animation, though.  Anything that isn't a physical attack with a weapon.  Also the sound effects are all fucked up.  It's still worth playing, but it's annoying as hell.

Forgot to comment to this earlier.

Half-Minute Hero is an epic game with good music. You don't have to grind in "30 seconds" since the game is meant to be an RPG/puzzle for the main part. There is teeny bit of leveling to do. Anyway, Hero 300 and a lot missions in Hero 30 are great. There're also 3 other modes where levels aren't even part of the gameplay.

Then there's Hero 3...

lawl, as soon as I saw the topic I thought "What about Half-Minute Hero?"

The Disgaea series is well worth trying out.
