Also Cave makes epic boss tracks, so the bosses are worth it just as much as the stages are
Maaaan I want to play this boss so much ;_;

Finally started practicing some of DDP's second loop seriously. 2-1 and 2-2 aren't too bad, but 2-3... I can manage up to the point where the green bulletspam ships spawn but from then on I just get murdered. The boss is pretty rape, too (although really, really fun). I don't think 2-3 is getting perfected for a while. :V
Let's fight.

Since everyone's playing DDP, I thought I would give it a try as well. I've only played two games but I like it a lot so far.

I don't know how to play this game properly.

I don't know how to play this game properly.
Scoring is basically a combination of chaining (which has pretty harsh timing so you really want to learn a whole stage so you can chain every enemy on it; a full Stage 2 chain will net you around 12 million, for example) and your max bomb muliplier (which is a constant score increase dependant on both how many bombs you've collected with a full stock and your highest hit chain). So basically, be constantly shooting things and go as long as you can without dying or bombing. As for survival... well, stream a lot, I guess. :V

I've had experience from playing DOJ, but chaining in DDP is way less lenient and I break my chain way more often than usual.
Survival wise, getting to stage 6 boss on my second try is satisfying enough for me. Maybe I should start learning bee placements so I can reach second loop if that's ever possible.

I find the easiest way to access the second loop is via chaining; if you learn how to do Stage 2 properly, you can turn it into a 470~ hit chain, which is more than enough to pass the second loop requirements regardless of what shot type you're using. It's also the only one I've actually successfully pulled off, so yeah. I haven't actually tried the bees seriously, so that might not be too bad... seems like it could be awfully frustrating remembering to go out of your way and get every single bee in four seperate levels, though.

What precisely are the requirements for the second loop?  Also, when are you awarded points for a chain?  And how are stage bonuses calculated?

What precisely are the requirements for the second loop?  Also, when are you awarded points for a chain?  And how are stage bonuses calculated?
1) one of the 4 below:
- 270/300/330 max hit with A/B/C ship respectively (boss hits don't count)
- 50,000,000 score
- collect all 13 bees from 4 stages
- die only two times
and not continue, I think :p

2) the points are awarded during your chain, dunno the exact calculation (though one 200 hit chain is going to be much more worthy than 10x20 hit ones :p)

3) you have the No Miss Bonus (which varies depending on what stage you was), the boss hit bonus and the value of the stars you've collected through the stage, as long as you didn't die (however, if you're playing as 2P, the stars are carried over to the next stages, until you die and lose them. 1P can continue chains through Laser bombing with max bombs, I've heard..)
neku: now for something important.
Translations.
How much time do you guys think it will take for HM to be translated? Besides everyone's story modes and the whole menus, there's also the fact that the way HM's programmed is different from all other games. I bet it'll take two months.

You can do one of five things to access the second loop (based on my not exactly perfect memory):
  • Get a chain: 270+ with A-type, 300+ with B-type, 330+ with C-type.
  • Get over 50 million points by the end of the first loop.
  • Die twice or less.
  • Bomb three times or less.
  • Collect all thirteen of the bees in four seperate stages.

You're always awarded points for a chain; as far as I can tell, though, the points you get for each hit is based on the points for the specific enemy you destroy, multiplied by the chain number you're currently at. So basically, you probably won't notice anything from a 10-20 hit chain at all, but the amount of points you'll gain per hit grows exponentially: a 180~ hit chain may net you around 2 million, while a 270 chain will probably net you around 4 or 5 million. Etc.

I don't really know about the generic stage bonuses other than you get quite a lot of points added if you get a high hit chain on the boss. :V The no-miss bonus for the first loop is 100,000 x [stage number + 1], and for the second loop it's 1,000,000 x [stage number +1].

Damn it, this game is starting to piss me off again.  Fucking game-long chains.  Even though I like this game a lot, grinding it for more than a few days at a time is too mentally draining, breaks are necessary.  I'd really like it if I could 1cc it before Monday though...

You guys should take a break and play some Twinkle Star Sprites. No matter how pissed off you'll get at the game, you'll find it hard to quit. I've been playing it a lot all week. It's short, so it doesn't feel like that big of a deal when you die on the last stage. But that's the beauty of it. It starts of easy and gets really cheap hard about 4 minutes in, and the game itself rarely lasts more than 10 minutes.

Speaking of Twinkle Star Sprites:
Finally, a 1CC.

I caught the screenshot before the text showed up in the blue box down there, but it said 'Destroy enemies faster next time!'. Should give you a hint how fast this game goes, especially since it took me just over 7 minutes to complete. Lots of room to improve as well, I guess.

Pics from the ending, and a touch of the game's signature Engrish:

At least you're not playing DOJ where chaining is 99% of the score, it's only propably less than half in DDP. And it's not like you have to start the game and immediately attempt to chain everything (Can't chain most of the complete stages anyway). Personally I started with just playing it for score without actually minding the chaining much, only some in stage 1&2, and when the later stages became boring enough survival wise I thought I might as well start trying to figure out how to chain them.

I highly recommend both games. You're going to like Galuda2's Black Label mode so much it'll be hard for you to enjoy the original Arcade Mode.
Ketsui is also fucking amazing, even if it won't have a hi-res mode like Futari, Galuda2 and Deathsmiles does.

Is there an "unfocus" movement in DDP ? Like tapping Shot instead of holding it down ?

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to both, especially Ketsui... getting a very strong DoDonPachi vibe from that game.

Not entirely sure what you mean. Tapping shot does make you go a lot faster than holding it down and firing the laser, but I think you already knew that. :V

If you're playing DOJ as a shot type, the difference between laser and shot is really drastic, so maybe you didn't notice it if you were expecting something like that; DDP's shot/laser speed difference is around the same as DOJ Exy's, IIRC. Shot is definitely faster than laser, though.

I just died to the very first bullet in dodonpachi

yes the very first bullet shot by the cannon fodder tanks
derp

just realized how bad I am at shmups

never got past 31m in dodonpachi and that was with the lucky st5 perfect streaming which is the only way I can possibly loop that game

st3 beginning with the huge ships always walls me
if that doesn't wall me, the cancel section does

even the scores are pretty much same every single run
when I 1cc, it's always 24-25m

If you find a part which consistently gives you trouble, make a savestate right there and practice it again and again until you find a reliable way of doing it. Pretty much the only reason I can loop consistently is because I've done that with damn near every section of the first loop. :V Also, spend a while learning the full Stage 2 chain, easiest way to loop and it'll boost your score like nobody's business. It'll bring you to 18~ mil by the end of that stage and IIRC over 30 mil by the end of Stage 3 provided you keep your max bonus. I don't think I've ever done the full chain and perfected the first four stages on the same run, but I'm fairly confident you'd be over the 50 mil mark if you kept it up past Stage 4.

tried other shottypes

B-S: can't see crap through the shot, but it slows down the game a lot.
C-L: the shot is only good when it's at full power - one death and you have a shoddier A-L which can't chain, stream or do anything else

Also, the st5 boss is a complete dick to the slower shottypes. I swear, the suns are undodgeable.
