Is this the guy who talked about GUH WANG?

Anyway, I was conscripted into playing Exceed 3rd BP.

It...

WAS FUN.

Of course, I could pick out about a dozen patterns that were clearly inspired by Touhou ones, and the game slowed down like crazy sometimes, but it was still fun. Sariel as the last boss was a pleasant surprise.

What no. :< I only 1cc'd normal because I had autobomb on, I don't want to think about hard.

Hard is surprisingly not that much more difficult, but digression aside, you have to be on Normal to play Extra anyway.

1) 1CC the game (done).
2) Turn autobomb off.
3) Play the game again on Normal.
4) When you get to Stage 4, a midboss appears. Defeat her before the timer expires. Don't die and/or bomb during the fight. She has a lot of health so you have to be awesome.
5) Continue 1CCing the game. You'll enter Extra stage after the final boss.
6) You can't continue in Extra.

If you manage to clear Extra, it will become available in Practice Mode. A new difficulty mode will also become available--"Exceed"; it's exceedingly difficult. :V

Did we have a thread/week for Genetos?  It's pretty interesting.
Cheating? I cannot even wrap my head around the point of it. Wouldn't you know you had cheated? How on Earth could you maintain crisp certainty of your superiority to all others? And if you're unable to do that, what's the point of anything?

There's a thread for Genetos on the second page. We didn't have a week for it since Matsuri just started doing the competition thing this week.

Yeah. No need to bump it though; since it's an STG you can just discuss it in here, now. Less clutter on the board, y'know.

How to trigger service mode in MAME? I've managed it only once because I hit the keyboard while raging at Progear, so I have no idea what I pressed

Start game, press Tab, and look in Input (this Game). Look for whatever key Service is bound to. It's usually F2, I think. Just press and hold that during the game.

When it comes to Ikaruga, the polarity changing doesn't bother me as much as its score system where you have to chain by killing sets of three enemies of the same color. I couldn't get into that aspect of the game at all.

Say, I just started using keyremap.exe. But it has this very annoying feature where it will Automatically alt-tab while I'm being shot at to ask if I wish to continue using the program. After clicking yes, it will just ask again in like 5 minutes. It's very annoying and just plain kills me since I can't control the game alt-tabbed. The funny thing is that games that are smart enough to puase automatically while alt-tabbed do some weird pseudo-pause where they continue shooting but the bullets dont move. So once I alt-tab back in, the screen just *FLOODS* with bullets.

It says see the help file for details, but there's only the ini, and I can't find anything in there related to this annoying feature.

Odd. I don't use a key remapper so I don't really know. But I just set it up so left shift slows me down in Exceed and played it up to the third stage and I got no warning. :\ Your error sounds like StickyKeys, which triggers a dialogue window when you hit shift five times in a row, which might be what you were doing. But something tells me that's probably not it...

I know this may sound like terrible complaining, Matsuri, but you should put the exact time when a Shmup of the Week contest ends on the first post of the thread (no questions asked).

Just me, maybe.

Well, a weekly competition starts on Monday, so it should end on Monday, yes?

Either way, you have a point. I'll fix it now.

As for next week's theme, I'm thinking Raizing... perhaps?

EDIT: Okay, it's fixed. Lots of scores to add as well. I might as well update those as well.

Nope, not sticky keys.. some weird message that says something like "you have used 1892 hotkeys within the last 270 seconds, are you sure you wish to resume? I'll click yes, go back in game, and next t hing I know it asks me in like 90 seconds. argh.

Anyway it decided to stop magically for some reason, go figure. Managed to 1cc eXceed on hard with the extra stage included on my first try since..well. trying to upload those youtube videos which never worked (stopped playing after that for some reason). I think that last patch nerfed the game, trickster was MUCH easier. I ALMOST spellcapped magmadiving too, doh. Only used one bomb right at the very end, normally that card makes me bomb like 6 times, ugh.

I also notice the extra stage seems to be affected by difficulty now too. eXceed difficulty is hard, and easy is..well, easy. Hard seems to be the same it was before the patch. Though maybe the key remap thing just makes me play THAT much better. (I know it would but not by quite so much).

That's good to hear.

What did you do to access Extra on Hard? On Normal you just have to 1CC the game once to unlock Remedy in Stage 4, and then have autobomb off and not die/bomb against her on subsequent 1CCs. Did you do the same on Hard?

Uh. I thought that once you unlock it once, you always get it no matter what. But yeah, I beat her with no bombs/deaths..which is easier to do on hard than normal IMO.

After you unlock Remedy you'll run into her no matter what (except on Easy), but you need to have autobomb disabled, and you need to defeat her without dying and bombing in order to get to Extra. I assume you can't use a continue at any point during the run, either. But it's good to hear that Extra is available on Hard (and presumably, Exceed), since up until this point I had always thought it was only available on Normal.

Well I always have autobomb off anyway, the deathbomb timer in the game is long enough that I can reliably deathbomb regardless. So it's really just a matter of 1ccing hard and not getting owned by the stage 4 midboss. You're sure you have to not bomb/die to her though? I don't really like that system. That first attack of hers is quite difficult for me (I suck at micrododging in general). The 2nd one is hard on normal but piss easy on hard.

They really nerfed the 2 bullet spammers before Remedy on the extra stage too, they shoot as much but they die very fast now.

Yeah, I'm sure you can't die. She'll just float away without saying anything if you do. I'm confident that you can't bomb as well (other people claim you can't in that thread on DS), but it should be pretty easy to confirm; I may have actually tested it myself but I just can't remember now. I ran many tests testing out various permutations of variables.

Her first attack is a bitch, I agree. I try to stay between the "points" of the red formation spread she fires out so that I have ample room to move around, but it's difficult predicting where those points are. The second attack is pretty easy because you only need to dodge the first wave. For the second wave, before it materializes, all you have to do is move up and point-blank her. I don't remember how the first waves differ between Normal and Hard.

The readme packaged with the 1.004 just lists a bunch of bug-fixes.. Unfortunately the framerate issue I have during Dark Fantasy wasn't one of them. I can't have any legit runs because of it. :( Maybe those bullet spammers just have less health on Hard?

Looks like its account has been suspended. Oh well, we won't need it for this week.

All right, I think I've decided on this week's theme. Let's play some Raizing/8ing shmups.

A little novelty/background history: Long ago, in a country far, far away there was a company called Toaplan. They made games you may have heard of, such as Batsugun and Gekirindan and Tatsujin/Tatsujin Ou, as well as games you may not have heard of, such a V-Five, Tiger Heli, Same! Same! Same!, and Dogyuun!!. They are also responsible for Zero Wing, which spawned a port that gave birth to the ever-famous 'ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US' meme. Anyway, when this company closed its doors in 1994, it broke off into four companies. These companies were Gazelle (who only ever made two games: Air Gallet and a beat 'em up, Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon), Takumi (who went on to make games like Giga Wing, Giga Wing 2, and Mars Matrix), CAVE (who needs no introduction here), and a company named Raizing, who was incorporated into Eighting/8ing in 2000, and stopped focusing on creating shmups. One of Raizing's more well-known designers/programmers, Shinobu Yagawa, now works for CAVE, and is involved with many of their recent games.

Since Raizing has only released a set number of games, there's no reason to have nominations. We can start the voting right away!

Sorcer Striker / Mahou Daisakusen
Battle Garegga
Terra Diver / Soukyugurentai (not sure if we can pull this off on MAME or not)
Armed Police Batrider
Battle Bakraid
Dimahoo / Great Mahou Daisakusen
1944: The Loop Master
Brave Blade

I strongly suggest looking some of these games up on YouTube or something. Don't want to end up like last week with the whole 'a ton of people pick X-Multiply and then complain about how much they hate it' thing again.

Like last week, voting closes at 11:00 AM EST on Monday, February 22.

Go!

I'll abstain from voting, because I would choose either APB or Garegga (because people *must* know them!), both of which I have some experience with.. and I don't know enough of the other games (so I don't want to regret voting for a game that most people may not enjoy)
neku: now for something important.
Translations.
How much time do you guys think it will take for HM to be translated? Besides everyone's story modes and the whole menus, there's also the fact that the way HM's programmed is different from all other games. I bet it'll take two months.

lusvik: I don't mind about playing HM in japanese. The language of punching other people is international.
