Cave Story is yet upon us
« on: February 06, 2010, 05:44:02 AM »
Alright now people. Anyone ever play Cave Story? The greatest indie game in history?

I sure have.

In fact, I have over 12 different character mods. Hundreds of levels and the like, oh my god. I love Cave Story almost as much as Touhou. Anyone else feel this way?

La-Mulana is welcome as well. The two retro-styled games are practically cousins. (Not really)

I could've sworn there was already a thread for this, but I may have been thinking of a different forum.

That said, I've yet to play it, but I've heard nothing but good things.

Cave Story is fantastic, just like everything else Pixel has created.

I haven't actually played anything by Pixel other than Cave Story and Ikachan. What else did he make?

I made sure there wasn't a thread, at least, not for 4 pages.

Also, it's freeware, so I expect lots of people to lend a hand into the topic.

Here's a tribute site that has info on all of pixels work:
www.cavestory.org
Simple enough, right?

There was another thread for this. It died pretty quickly because really, pretty much everyone has already played it (twice), and heck, if people here found out about Touhou you can't expect them to not know about Cave Story. In fact for a while a few years ago you couldn't not hear about Cave Story unless you were gaming under a rock. It got annoying after a point and to some it still is, the game is good, yes, very good even, we get it, everyone knows it already.

And La-Mulana is just so much better in every way anyway.

Yeah, you can find pretty much everything Pixel has ever made on cavestory.org, but I don't think PxTone is on there. It's a music-making program! You can get that on Pixel's official site, though.

Hmm, I wonder what DropEncoderOgg and Akantares are. I haven't seen either of those, before.

I actually haven't played em but I'm not really into platformers too much. I did enjoy IWBTG for masochistic/humor purposes, but that bored me after awhile too.

I played through Cave Story a few times back in the day, and while I liked it, I don't think I'll be returning to it anytime soon. Its luster has kind of worn off.

La Mulana though. Shit. This game just blew me away. I loved almost everything about it, except for the Tower of the Goddess, which just pissed me off because I kept falling while trying to make the ascent. I fully intend on replaying this game one day, but I'm waiting until I forget enough.

I spent a whole year on La Mulana. I'm really glad I didn't just "Deceased Crab" my way through the game like 99% of players did. I haven't had an experience like that since Link to the Past, and I beat that one in 2 weeks. The "contextual puzzles" are really what makes the game. The ladder in the Confusion Gate is BS though  :P

Wiiware version is going to be remixed to an extent for area design, weapons, enemies, and so forth. I'm a lot more interested in it than I otherwise would be.

And Cave Story is pretty fly, too. Not a whole lot to say about it, other than it's really awesome. Lots of polish in physics, collision detection and damage balances. Can't say I give a rat's behind about the wii version though.

I played Cave story a couple of years ago now and loved every moment of it although I never did manage to beat the extra stage. I almost suck as much at that as much as I suck at Touhou.

Ahahahaha, oh wow.

Anyway, this thread is fine. We can just make it the general Pixel thread or something.

Anyway I haven't played La-Mulana yet. What is it?

The hardest game other than IWBTG ever. That's all you need to know.

Japanese Indiana Jones goes into ancient ruins to look for an ages-long forgotten secret. LOOOOOOONG game, which is a plus in my book. Best video game soundtrack I can think of. Will consume your soul. Will also make you feel smarter every time you solve a puzzle, no matter if it took you three weeks to get past a single screen.

It's a different kind of difficult, as you might have noticed. IWBTG breaks you by killing you out of nowhere and making you repeat a jump 20 times only to kill you out of nowhere again after you pull it off, so you have to try 20 more times. La-Mulana doesn't kill you very much - and after a while it'll be rare for you to die at all - but it took me 8 months to finish it, because at times you'll simply have absolutely no idea what you're supposed to do, should you miss/ignore/misunderstand a certain piece of (most of the time cryptic) information. You can, should and will backtrack at your leisure to check the info again, but if you missed it in the first time, good luck "remembering" where it was.

wikipedia is a good explain machine.
It's also probably FULL OF SPOILERS, AVOID.

Just avoid the plot and characters section. Just read the top and gameplay segments. That's what I do with most games of this era.

I suppose I should warn next time. Sorry Matsuri. My stupidity still overwhelms me.  :'(

Its been one of my favorite games for a long-long time now, second only to the otherwise incomparable Super Mario Bros. 3 in my book. I've had great fun running/jumping around, shooting things, building an arsenal and exploring the island.

I like the story that it has to tell. I do find that the basic plot is a tad bit generic in concept but the execution is very good and world's so richly detailed for a video game of its size. I can't really think of all that many holes or oversights concerning the in-game sequence of events. I remember one time I noted one of the little roach guys (Gaudis, I think?) said I smelled like a Mimiga, so I replayed the whole game just so I could get to that spot with the Mimiga Mask to see if anything happened and it did! The change in dialog wasn't all that much, as the dude didn't think it was so funny but it was a nice acknowledgement of a curious player's mindset that many commercially oriented games would've overlooked. So cool. I don't know if I'd ever give the thing up again, if you didn't need the Booster to access a very particular place.

The cast is wonderful too and shows to me a very wide array of intriguing personalities like the pessimistic Misery, the survivalist Sakamotos, the quite highly energetic enthusiastic Balrog and Curly brace, the shrewd yet noble King, the feable and not so plot-vital Santa, the introverted/lonely Malcom and so on. I'd say it's a very key feature of the game's enjoyability..

I may be a bit biased when I say the graphics look stunning, as I have a slightly uncommon slant for a game player, towards preferring pixel art but I must say, the sprites and backgrounds are truly awesome.

The most amazing thing though, it's all the work of one highly skilled and multitalented man working at something with great joy and dedication for a very, very long time. Just for the sake of doing it! I really could hardly believe it the first time I read that. I think the level of quality it achieves from this seems rather uniquely coherent and I believe there'll never be anything quite like this again. Unless that is, Zun suddenly decides to put the release of his next game on a five year Hiatus to make a completely killer installment of the Touhou series. I kinda doubt that'll happen though.

Also, so long as I'm thinking about it, what is it about these guys who like to make themselves sound like an entire development team? StudioPixel and Team Shanghai Alice? Perhaps they're really the same person?! I wouldn't really be surprised. I mean, just take a look at Balfrog and Suwako! Okay, it's probably just a reference. Probably anyway... Dun, dun, dun! :P

On an almost entirely unrelated tangent, I'd like to say I thought it was rather cool when I first joined this community when I noted that two people were using Cave Story sprites as avatars. One person, who's name I forgot was using The Doctor and another, Drake I think, was using Quote. It's so very hard to find fellow Cave Story fans and despite my enthusiasm, I've had very little success in converting them myself. You'd think it'd be easier to get people to try a small little 10 megabyte free game.

P.S. Yeah I know, Balfrog is supposed to be a very specific form of Balrog, as opposed to his normal state, but I really couldn't think of a more consise way to make the complete comparison. Also, I hope that R51 doesn't mind that I stole his avatar to show that! XD... I kinda doubt it.

...I think you're thinking into this a bit too much. She's flapping her arms to imitate wings (though I have no idea how that's supposed to work). Balrog didn't particularly invent doing that.

True he didn't invent it. Still, the way they squint and even the timing of the flap is similar too. Even the way she has her knees bent make them look like Balrog's stubs. Besides, why in the the world would a frog girl with the powers of a god, try to fly by emulating a bird? It's something I've been curious about since the first time I saw an image of her doing that and it really makes so very little sense. When I saw the avatar showing Balrog flying again for the very first time, there was an instant connection in my mind! XD

But yeah... it could be a coincidence, possibly. I kinda doubt it myself though.

I think the general intention was for Suwako's animations to be incredibly silly. Why else would they have her randomly spawn lillipads and use skillcards by doing a hat trick?

I fixed the stupid Windows 7 palette problem in La Mulana but I can't seem to fix this transparency issue. http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/6918/lamulana.png

The wiki says to create a batch file that disables windows explorer while playing, but I have no idea how to go about doing that.
