Same basic strategies with all roguelikes.
Don't forget about learning the "monsters" themselves.

Most annoying ones to me are Youmu's, Iku's, Remi's and Suika's by the way.

And for certain bits of information that might be useful:

  • Use a "Storage" Gap (保存のスキマ) to store food and other valuables you don't want destroyed if possible; Yuyuko can't eat anything inside one for instance. These are fairly common; I normally find 2-3 in a full run from 1F to 30F. This also prevents thefts and item conversion of the items inside. Not too sure if the gap itself can be converted though, and whether or not that would destroy all the items inside.
  • Equipped items cannot be destroyed; but they can be disarmed by various means.
  • "Storehouse" Gap is 倉庫のスキマ. Guess what it does?
  • Avoid trying to fight while standing on stairs; you deal half damage.
  • For reasons unknown to me, having more money allows you to deal more damage. This is limited to about 10k. Guess Reimu really wants to protect her loot  :V
  • Medicine / Drugs / Potions / w/e are a decent substitute for food, just watch out that you don't drink a useful one (e.g. Dmg+) or... an exploding one. Throw exploding ones at large overwhelming groups. You don't get Experience, but at least you survive. You can choose to drink it instead to take out everything one space around you if you really want to.
  • To avoid being bombarded with newspapars, have a full inventory.
  • Newspaper itself is great for throwing.
  • Don't throw Gaps unless you know what you're doing.
  • When confused, rather than persist in swinging at "them" and hopelessly missing, just keep firing amulets instead.

Ah, so that's the storage gaps. There seem to be so many gap-types that I didn't know which one does what, and I was too lazy to look up the kanji ;-P

Also, are recovery items really as rare as they seem to me? Especially HP-recovery. I get a ton of medicines all the time, but none of them seems to be for health. I had exploding ones before, and one that made Reimu drunk, but barely useful ones.
Which are the kanji to watch out for in the medicince/ spellcard descriptions to get an idea of the effect?

I learnt most of them through experimentation.

There aren't many (variety of) HP ones. Most of the time, I just relied on the HP rengeration from moving around instead.

...all the potions are notable for their own purposes. The ones that I found useful were:

加速薬 - Spd+ (doubles)
怪力薬 - Dmg+ (doubles)
目薬 - Reveals traps and invisible units
緑茶 - HP +20; at full HP you instead get Max HP +1
玉露 - HP +100; at full HP you instead get Max HP +3 (why would you do that with this one!?). This also heals the ailments such as slow.

The ones that I suggest you don't drink unless you're desperate:

毒薬 - Poison; -1 "ちから" (this roughly translates to Vigor; which is a factor in determining damage dealt). If you have an Antidote (解毒薬), then it's fair I suppose. You reduce hunger at least by drinking both.
混乱薬 - Confusion Drug; Confusion. Throw this at enemies or sell it.
爆薬 - Explosive; :V
睡眠薬 - Sleeping Drug (loc: Pill); Sleep. Throw this at enemies or sell it.

Then, there are these:
しあわせになれる薬 - Happy Drug; +1 Level
ちからの薬 - Vigor Drug; +1 Max (and current) Vigor
どくだみ茶 - (?? Tea); +5 Max HP
みず - Water; Personally I would just drink it to reduce hunger by 5%. Don't really know any other uses at this point. Might consider throwing it at Mokou at some point.

I could rearrange this into order if you wish. Though, they are somewhat in order at this point.

Spell Cards

博打「エスポワール」 - Gambling by Rock Paper Scissors. Double or nothing. Honestly, I wouldn't bother taking the risk.
厄除「サーディーンヘッド」 - Enchants equipped items to not get hit by curses (which reduce their effectiveness / curses them)
名付けて「越後ショート!」 - Turns selected item into food. Apparently does not work on "Tags" or Gaps.
増大「ピロルスの解放」 - ? I think it increases the space of a Gap by 1.
夢符「二重結界」 -  A.K.A. "Duplex Barrier". Hits all squares around you. Does a lot.
幻惑「アンキャニーシャイン」 - Confusion to all (visible?) enemies.
強化「荒御霊」 - Enhances (equipped) Weapon. Also uncurses.
御祓「カーネルサルベージ」 - Uncurses. Forgot if it was only the equipped or entire inventory or whatnot. Didn't really use it too often.
照符「ブックオブライト」 - Book of Light. Reveals entire floor except for invisible units / traps.
忘却「ニューラライザー」 - Sleep to all (visible?) enemies.
硬化「幸御霊」 - Enhances (equipped) Armor. Also uncurses.
神霊「夢想封印」 - A.K.A. "Fantasy / Dream Seal". Hits all visible units. Moderate damage, about 25 damage. Good for 30F, except for one tiny problem...

These Spell Cards are in order. That's not the entire list. There are other Spell Card exclusive to the second dungeon for instance. Or, ones that I missed out on.

Oh, there's also a gap that heals your HP to full when you put items in. Those are rare and are only really useful at the end though.

And to get it out of the way, you can't place gaps in gaps  :V

EDIT: Forum font is squeezing the text together a bit; take care of that.

Woah, thank you very much \(^_^)/
That will help a lot.

Oh, so I can throw items at enemies too? Didn't know that, that's useful.

Edit: Yep, knowing items helps a lot. I got to the lake section for the first time ^^
Lesson for the day: Killing a Youmu wile other enemies are close by is a bad idea unless you can take out Myon in one hit...

Youmu/Myon in this game are your standard Hydra. You MUST have a Roukanken on you by the time you face Youmu to deal with Myon.

So in other words, keep away from those floors until I have Roukanken. Well, let's see how long that will take me, seeing as the game has decided to never give me any weapons at all the last days  :V

Minoriko ate my Roukanken +2 and shat out a food item.

Survived fine on speed and attack potions until floor 10. Out of spells, ofuda, hp and recovery items. Facing down Youmu and Cirno v2, it was time to quit.

Managed to save up a fair inventory of weapons at least.

Minoriko ate my (spare) Rare Shield priced at 7500. Minoriko at my +3 Yuyu Hat. Minoriko ate my Spell Cards. Etc. It's annoying, yes but at least it's not as bad as OH GOD IKU (Lv2) STOP CONFUSING ME AND HURTING ME AT THE SAME TIME FROM ANYWHERE ON THE SCREEN.

Oh, and I also died to a trap for the first time ever. 8 Damage. Fortunately, I was using "spare" equipment.

I'll compile a list of everything (in order) together when I get back to uni classes next week.
Also, if you haven't already started using it, use the Spacebar key in the inventory screen to re-order it.

Pesco: Roukanken isn't the only anti Youmu & Myon; there's the Aya fan(Hits Floating enemies for high damage), and Sang Scarlet Sword(super effective against everything, I think).

Also, you can easily get some extra levels at floor 8-10 by abusing the Myon's the form a tier 3 Suwako, and then kill it for 220 EXP, which is a lot at that point.

Hina cursed it. Like in normal roguelikes, you can't unequip cursed items. Then again, who'd want to unequip Meiling's hat? It returns 1/3 of all melee damage.

How do you keep items exactly after you have to quit?

When I give up in the dungeon because I'm about to die... why do I get to keep only the useless stuff? Why not my equipped items? Why not the gaps I put random stuff in?

Is there a way to keep those items? Because otherwise I don't see the freaking point of giving up instead of dying if it doesn't help the next run anyway.

"Storehouse" Gap is 倉庫のスキマ
Don't mix this one and the Storage Gap. Storehouse is the one that sends items back. Storage just puts it away for later use (i.e. you can pull the items back out if you need to).

Ah ok. That explains why it always seemed empty even after I put stuff in  :V
A gap trap had teleported it away and I thought it removed the items inside after I got it back.

When a Storehouse Gap is full, do you have to keep it for the items to be sent to the shrine or can I throw it away to free some space?

But... if Storehouse gaps are what keep your items, is there any point in giving up?

The Storehouse Gap works immediately, there's no need to hold on to the gap after you put the items in. So you can immediately drop it for extra space, or sell it to a shop and the items that you put in would still be at the Shrine.

Giving up makes certain things quicker. Better than wasting a few turns dying or if you're spamming restarts to start off with that really powerful and valuable sword.

Also, be careful of accidentally throwing your Gaps (into walls). I've done it at least 4 times, and it wasn't particularly nice having 5-8 items being scattered across the floor.

Wait wait wait, how is that even possible? Last I checked Minoriko couldn't even eat up (my) gaps when I was dancing around her to change my bad food into better food. And for the record, I was holding about 8 Storage Gaps and none of those were converted into food. This calls for a version check. 1.15 is the latest.

That said, I finally managed (after going through a really ridiculous number of Change[not an accurate translation] Gaps) to get a Hakurei Amulet (5). Now to actually do synthesis and decide which 5 amulets I should combine together. The only problem is, I don't know what all the amulets do; just most of them.

EDIT: Compiling list seeing as I have the time to today.

I'm on 1.15 It was a Minoriko v3 that ate it. Ran v3 can kick your gear off the level. A very useful feature I will dub the Strategic Ragequit can save you those items. If you screw up a snythesis or get shafted real bad, just Alt+F4 quit before you die. The game autosaves whenever you enter a new floor. The Strategic Ragequit doesn't give the game a chance to overwrite your progress. You can just restart the game at the beginning of the floor.

I don't think you can combine pendants. That would be all sorts of broken.

Btw, don't craft anything with an Onbashira, the chance to break carries over too.

Ah.

It would. But I had to go through several dozen gaps of cramming items in just to get it. According to the wiki, the Hakurei Amulet can have anywhere from 2-5 slots for Synthesis. And furthermore, it's only the Hakurei Amulet that can be used as the base for Synthesis. Might as well run a preliminary test with one (or two) of my spare "rare" amulets and see if the ability carries over.

EDIT:

That should demonstrate it's possible with said amulet.

Btw, don't craft anything with an Onbashira, the chance to break carries over too.
So I realized  :V
