Aquastyle's Roguelike game
« on: February 01, 2010, 04:22:47 AM »
I know the game just came out, so a translation is a long ways away, but I'm wondering if anybody has heard anything about someone even working on one. I mean all things considered with Labyrinth of Touhou, the plus disk was released during the last Summer Comiket, and the original was not too much earlier than that (sometime after C75). I imagine Labyrinth of Touhou has oodles more text than Aqua style's game as well, so I'm hoping that a translation will be out within a year..All assuming it's even being worked on. So please let me know if anybody has heard anything.

I checked the poolshmer forums, but haven't really seen much info there, but to be honest, I'm really bad at even figuring out HOW to browse those forums properly, I don't know how people manage.

I have a few tools that I received that are usable enough to make a patch, but there's 4 problems;

1)It's a bit of a pain to use (not too important)
2)The font is hueger than xbox (example: http://www.pooshlmer.com/wakaba/src/1262917162931.jpg). This can run into space problem for an accurate translation for some of the items with longer names/more verbose descriptions. Some summarizing probably could be done to get around it, but I doubt that can apply for everything.
3)The font is not fixed-width, so it's going to be hard to figure out how much space there is to work with without overflow.
4)The game seems to be patched regularly currently, and every patch seems to modify the major script files. Last I checked it was 1.021; apparently it's up to 1.12 now.

I might work on it after I'm finished with Touhou Soccer 2, assuming the patching has slowed down by then.

Also, Labyrinth was technically started and completed within a period of 1.5 months (most of the last two weeks spent on testing/finding stray Japanese strings/doing the reference list), and while it likely had oodles more text, the means of replacing it was also a lot easier.

Thanks for the info, sounds like people are indeed working on it after all. I was mostly curious since I was thinking about trying the game without knowing wtf I was reading, or if I had hope to unerstand it if I actually read it.

I tried playing the Touhou SRW without knowing what I was doing, man did I fail hard. My first turn ended with me ending the game thinking I was accessing end turn, derp!

I've got the v1.00->1.10 patch but it doesn't seem to want to work. Is there a mirror with the in between patches or can someone upload them separately for me?

Some idea on the gameplay would be nice too.

I'd like to try it myself but being unable to read the town menu is not a good start >=(. Even if I could read Japanese I don't think I'd understand it. Even though my computer has Japanese language packs installed and whatnot, the characters display as random garble like ^A╚ and such.

The 1.01 through 1.021 patches are obsolete - you should be able to upgrade from v1.00 to 1.10 with the specified patch.

...Or so I say, but mine isn't working either ;_;

Did you try smacking your monitor?

Anyway I just tried good old 1.0 sinc eI always hear people say "version 1.xx doesn't work!". 1.0 seems to work fine for me minus the text display issue, which I have a feeling is there regardless of version. Even if it was fixed, doesn't make much difference for me since I can't read it anyway!

Version 1.10 added a bunch of stuff, as far as I know.

I only played 1.00, so maybe I should try it again with 1.10. Is it possible to win the game now, and not running out of food around Stage 20?

I've heard people reach floor 100 or something, I don't know if it's true.. I can't play it myself, all the text is replaced with commas and shit for some reason, wtf. And I can't even run applocal.. I right click, and my computer gives me an hourglass for like 2 minutes, then forgets what it was doing, never giving me the opportunity to run applocal.

The patching issue was figured out a few days ago and I suppose we should share it.

Unistall the game and clean the directory completely. Getting a fresh start just makes things easier. Change your time zone to GMT+9 Tokyo. Install the game and run the patches. It'll work fine from there on. Don't ask why, it just works.

For the guys playing with the text coming up all messed up, language packs and unicode settings are the surefire fix. It'd be very helpful if your text shows up properly and you can make meaningful screenshots if you want to know exactly what an item does.

What is this unicode setting anyway. I have Japanese language pack installed, and I tried applocale, but no dice. Is unicode the control panals, regional and language options, Advanced tab "Language for non-unicode programs" drop-down selection box? I though that was basically the thing applocale sets, and resets automatically for you.

I have no idea how applocale works. Changing the unicode setting usually requires a restart so I don't think applocale can do that so easily. But yeah, that's the setting you need to have in place.

I'be experienced cases where starting something with Applocale wouldn't work, but setting the system's region setting to Japanese would do the trick. So both work differently, and basically changing the setting works better in the long run.

As per Pesco's request. I got to the end of heaven and killed Tenshi. Iku spawned on me so I got slowed and then Nitori invisible killed me. -_- Luckily, I'm a genius and had sent a bunch of gear back to the shrine with a gap before dying. \o/

Yeah the game is finally in English Japanese now, instead of commas I mean. Patch download was slow, not sure if they work yet.
I played it for the first time, without really knowing wtf I was doing. Got to floor 5, did some shopping, sold my gear minus my best pieces, forged my armor to improve it (I wasn't sure if I was going to improve it), bought some spellcards (didn't know they were spellcards at the time), did something with Keine (sleep to recover hp/hunger?) and got owned by the next floor (or the one after, I forget) which was absolutely littered with Reimu Yukkuri's, they took 1 damage from everything, and I was pretty much cornered to begin with. I tried using my spellcards and stuff, but one seemed to do nothing at all, the other one made them fall asleep for a couple turns, another also seemed to do nothing, and I got rolled.

Game seemed really easy minus that part despite the fact I wasn't really sure what I was doing. Maybe I just got lucky with a good weapon at the start? I don't know. I found most enemies got owned pretty bad by attacking them from afar using 'q'. Seemed to cost nothing so might as well (unless you're shooting at Eirin, who shoots back). The dialogues are fun to watch despite not being able to read a damn word >=P, they really did a good job with those IMO.

update:
Patches still don't work for me, I'm using Tokyo time too, does the 1.00-1.10 patch need some patch prior to its use? its name suggests it doesn't need it but maybe that assumption is wrong.

It opens up some dialogue which looks like a log of changes. After that I get a yes/no dialogue, clicking either button brings me to the progress window which just stays at 0 regardless, with nothing but a button on the bottom middle, which simply closes the program when I click it.

And the d000.bin(?) stays behind when you uninstall sometimes so make sure you trash it.

I have a question: I haven't really toyed with synthesis a whole lot but I wanted to ask if say I synthesized a marisa hat with a minoriko hat, I did actually. I got a curse protected minoriko hat + 5 but my question is does the minoriko hat now prevent theft as well or did only the other bonuses carry over?

I don't get something though, when you die, you start over. But it appears that sometimes items carry over?! does anything else carry over too? And what's up with that dialogue  with that girl before you start adventuring? (Is that akyu? she looks a bit diff than I'm used to) seems that all those menus result in nothing at all, and there are so many of them. But I suspect that has something to do after playthrus that act as some kind of "carry over" between games.

No. Items don't carry over. You get money and an item from your donation box each cycle. You can send items back to your shrine warehouse with a certain kind of sukima, as well. Not to be rude but if you don't do enough reading to know "that girl" is Akyu you probably should start. :v It's going to be hard to play a game in a language you can't read if you're not willing to do any research.

Some people like Touhou without being into manga you know. So no, I don't do any reading. And if you could suggest to me a place where I CAN research, by all means tell me, because I HAVE spent the time trying to find such a page, there is no info on this game on the wiki, and I haven't had much luck finding any info on this game on pooshlmer after: "http://pooshlmer.com/wakaba/res/424352.html#425423"

I'm just saying that she doesn't look like Akyu quite the same way as what I'm used to seeing, which admitably isn't a whole lot since I don't read manga, or watch those things. I'm into Touhou for the games and music, not much else.

The second dungeon, spamming Spell Cards until I find my much needed desired "Scroll of Identify". This is one of the unfortunate side-effects of spamming though. Fortunately, I didn't get killed on the turn of activation.

This dungeon makes the other one look so tame it makes me go:
:V

And it really helps if you know what each of the items do. Then again, that's a given. Oh, we can also expect more patches to follow at this point.

EDIT: Also.

Same basic strategies with all roguelikes.

Don't let yourself get swarmed
Keep gear for various situations
Use an item if it will save your life since if you die it'd get lost anyway
Fight from far whenever possible
Explore everywhere
Don't take silly risks

So it comes down to the basics after all.
In that case I guess this game is just incredibly luck-based as well, because I had plays where I managed to get pretty far finding nice items, and others where I barely made through the first floors >_>

What I was wondering as well, how does saving work exaclty?

Just for the lulz, my top two miserable deaths:
- Being beaten to death by Cirno and Wriggle together on floor one after taking only about five steps...
- Being shot by an evolved Eirin that evolved by shooting a Momiji I was fighting in the back and killing her...

One save only that is lost when you load or die. There is another save at Hakurei shrine so that you don't need to sit through the intro every time.
