What's wrong with Maikaze's?
While the art is arguably decent and the voice work is top-notch, the story is incredibly boring and goes absolutely nowhere in the amount of time given, and as a result, it's very slow and just not very good. It's a huge step up from Side Story, but there are doujins that are shorter and get more done in a much better fashion. It also doesn't help that Maikaze won't be releasing a second episode for quite a while, and since the story laid out in the first episode is flat-out dependent on something actually happening, it just falls flat.
Because of the amount of time it took, the only thing they could do to make it seem like it wasn't a total waste while everyone waits for episode 2, if it ever comes, was to include an actual danmaku fight, and while it was neat from a special effect POV, it almost seemed out of place and would've made more sense happening when an actual conflict arises. Unfortunately, again, because of the time required to make an episode, they had to shoehorn it in to keep viewers interested.
Really, they should have simply included more fanservice. And no, I don't mean showing off the girls' bodies. Appeal to the fandom with references and situations that they get without really worry about dragging out a plot. I mean, the story is "Reimu's box is gone, what happen?" That shouldn't take long to introduce, five minutes at most, and in the remaining 25 minutes, so much could have been done to progress things, but it's like Maikaze loved the Bee Train camera pan so much, they decided to make it into an anime.
