WANTED: English-speakers for New Hori-ZUN 2!
« on: January 19, 2010, 03:16:21 AM »
I am currently planning the next book in my Touhou-themed English textbook series, New Hori-ZUN. As it is based on the English textbooks here in Japan, I would like to make them as similar as possible, and one of these factors is an audio CD of readings of the material in the textbook. It wasn't included in the first book because I wanted to focus on making the book part first, but now that I know what I'm doing with that (more or less), I want to start seeing if I can't get this together.

There are two tasks I need voices for:
1. Reading the material in the book

Requirements:
  • Native English speaker (American English preferred, but if close enough, I'll accept it)
  • Female (All the characters are girls after all...)
  • Must be able to record in decent quality

The more voices, the better, since I'm going to have every Level 3 and 4 boss and mid-boss speak (except for Cat Orin). If you can act in multiple voices while still speaking clear English, then that works too. I would prefer to have one voice per character, but we'll see what happens. Let me know what characters you want to audition for when you volunteer. Remember, acting is important, but this is an English textbook. Try to speak clearly and naturally.

2. Singing (not entirely confirmed yet)

Requirements:
  • Native English speaker (or really good anyway)
  • Male
  • You will be singing my translation of "The Highest Fastest Shutter Girl" by Cool&Create

Don't worry about sending auditions for this until I can get more confirmation on it.

I should be able to handle mastering and stuff, but definitely try to record things in as good of quality as you can. Maybe I will find some guidelines on how to make high quality recordings later... The deadline is still far in the future, since this won't be out until Summer Comiket (hopefully), but I want to start planning while I'm writing the book so I can keep everything in mind.

As for compensation, I think a copy of the book or two would be reasonable, similar to what Nakazato did for the Aki Sisters thing.

If you are interested, post in the thread or PM me. If you have any friends who might be interested, tell them about it too! I'll probably make an e-mail for this project so even non-MotK members will be able to help.

I am good at speaking english... or arleast decent (as i am the only one in my class who can read through an english book in just two weeks without running into any serious understanding problems).

I can also sing very well, but i do not like my voice that much, but whatever. At least i can help somewhere.

Tewi is a level 5 mid-boss. Next book maybe. :P

Somehow I knew I'd have more volunteers for the song, heh. It probably isn't going to be exactly the same translation that's currently on the wiki though. I'm going to have to change it a little more, so the rhythm and accents are more natural. Like I said though, that still isn't set in stone yet, and it won't happen at all unless the first part is done.

Do you have a link to the lyrics?  I can take a stab at the, uh, flowability of the lyrics if you don't mind.

Here you go

I tried to make the syllable count match exactly, but I'm beginning to think that might not have been the best idea.

Though I won't volunteer because there are much better singers than me here, may I give some comments?
You should definitely change some things. I tried singing that one before, and though it was possible, there were some parts that sounded really unnatural because I had to speed up / slow down words/phrases in a weird way.
What I remember especially were the two sentences that ended with 'illusion/confusion', and the 'will beat her wings even stronger', which was a pain to get halfway right.
Also problemtaic was the 'Now go all out..'-part, because it consists of long transitions between the syllables in Japanese, which doesn't work in English.

EDIT: Actually, my last sentence was bullshit. Listening to it again, I think it's simply more words in the Japanese version than in the English, and that makes it difficult.

I would be keenly interested in helping. Unfortunately, I do not own any recording devices.
If I could help with some other function, I would. Otherwise, good luck, I hope it goes well.

Possibly can apply for the singing part ( suprising huh ). Not native but I guess speaking is something I relatively master quite well.

I'd love to help for #2, but my microphone is junk, sadly. I have a pretty in-depth knowledge of English, being an English Canadian, however I tend to screw up words every so often when speaking...

I'll audition anyways, though, don't worry about that.

Oh look, I got an image in my signature. Finally.

Native American-English speaker here, with voice-over experience and recording devices. I'm in for 2., if you need me. Think it'd be fun. Decent singer, too, when I concentrate.

Er, sorry about that. >_>

Also, would using a voice changer be a viable option? Some voice changers can be really convincing in changing a man's voice to a woman's (one of my friends has used Screaming Bee to change his voice to a perfect imitation of a teenage girl's voice).

This. I discovered this by accident on Phantasy Star Online - it has voice filters, and I was messin' around with it once and suddenly went from Pleasing Baritone Husky Male to 11 year old schoolgirl.

My friend refuses to play on PSO with me now.

Never considered that, although I'm not sure how that would affect the sound quality. I'll keep it in mind but I'd like to use genuine females for the moment if possible.

Haha. I don't think my voice is high enough anymore to genderswap - I'm no longer Pleasing Baritone, more like 'run that by me one more time a semi just blew its jay-brake and oh that WAS you talking nevermind'

Hmmm... can this be moved into the Recovery Center forum? I don't know if it really fits here...

OK, I think I have a couple more voice actors on board. Somehow I have a feeling that this is as good as it's going to get, and since I won't have more than 3 characters in a chapter anyway, it should work out well enough.

triangles: Tell me which characters you really want to voice. The only two characters the other actresses wanted were Marisa and Alice, but other than that, there shouldn't be a problem.

As for the song, I'll start working on revising the lyrics soon enough so everyone interested can have time to practice.

Wellllll, I have a pretty high pitched voice naturally (my voice hasn't changed any since I was like 13 :'() so Marissa and Alice probably wouldn't have worked for me anyway!  I can whip up a quick voice sample MP3 of the various pitches I can talk in in the next day or so, and then you can see how that jives with the other ladyfolk and assign Touhous that way, that might work best?
