I really like PoFV. I'm going with barret here, I think it's a great game with a few very, very glaring flaws (first round Shikieki being the most obvious). I've come close to 1ccing Lunatic a few times, alternating between Cirno, Sakuya, and Yuka.

I'll steal a comparison from our friend Arcengal: much like MoF Stage 6 is basically all about VoWG, PoFV is basically all about the Shikieki battle. You're pretty much guaranteed to lose lives in Stages 6 and 7 (although I've gotten through 6 without dying once and it will never happen again), but after a death the AI lets up noticeably and will go down quickly in the next round. I like to think of Stages 1-6 as a "collection period," wherein your main goal is to amass lives (ie spam level 2s :V).

I'll repeat myself from another thread: "Fun != Fair," because that's what PoFV is: you force yourself through the insane unfairness at times and come out on top at the end.

just fyi, my IN lunatic 1cc was a complete trainwreck yet I've still did it.
I don't think I've ever perfected Mystia or beat Keine without dying.

I'm starting to notice some gameplay mechanics on my own, and let me tell you, that is...the biggest dick move ZUN has ever pulled. I never knew until now that panic bombing drains your entire charge bar, whereas doing it manually drains one level less. That is...just...fuck. That just pisses me off so much.

Also, you ever think that enemies coming from below isn't a horrible decision? Or giving you one second of invulnerability between hits? This game...is just irredeemable.

I got to Shiki with a life to spare, and it didn't make a fucking bit of difference because of these flaws.

PoFV is a dumb game.
I've improved in Touhou a lot over the times I've attempted Lunatic PoFV, but my results didn't improve one bit.

I've tried Normal and after no deaths in st1-5, st6 Reimu was running for 3 minutes on her last life piece.
On Lunatic, I'd say that st6 is impossible in one attempt, same for st7.
St8 is a bit more manageable and Shikieiki can fuck off.

I've got through Hibachi's final without dying.

I just wish I could play consistently.

Actually, if I did my absolute best, I could no miss all the way to before boss Marisa or if I was lucky Tewi. Of course, there's no way I'd repeat most of that. Mystia is 1 or 2 bombs assuming I don't mess up. If it wasn't so easy to mess up her first boss card, I'd memorize the thing and perfect her outside of maybe the Last Spell and if unlucky the final nonspell. If I no bombed stage 3's stage section, I could potentially no death Keine, but I usually get hit during the midboss card, so I bomb to avoid losing two bombs in place of 1.


Edit: Just lost to Koishi again. 2 deaths to her fucking heart spellcards. I can't play against those worth crap. Then a 1 death and lots of bombs timeout of Genetics because I can't kill that card, I don't know how. Then I game over on the second phase of Philosophy of a Hated Person because I got trapped.

Two deaths and a game over on the stage portion of UFO Stage 6. The first was with two bombs in stock and was because I was flying up the screen to grab the bomb item. The second was at the loleasy Space Invaders part, and with SIX GODDAMN BOMBS IN STOCK I COULD EASILY HAVE BEATEN BYAKUREN WITH THAT JESUS CHRIST.

Having said that, this was my test run (read: first attempt where I didn't restart on Stage 1 or 2) with ReimuB, so... that's encouraging, I suppose. Especially considering how I messed up Shou so badly.

...Also goddamn if I hadn't had that stupid death in Stage 2 with both bombs in stock I probably would have 1cc'd goddamnit goddamnit goddamnit

Patchy's theme, Native Faith, and Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye all belong in that top 10 for sure though. What the hell at Mokou and Koishi's theme ratings though, what the hell.

Died fighting Byakuren on Normal. Of course, this is nothing compared to the countless complaints around here about Lunatics and Extras. Still, I can be upset, can't I?

Surprisingly, I'm not as much ragesome as I am disappointed for losing after getting so far for once.
If there's any rage, it's not towards Byakuren. It's towards TORAMARU, who basically murdered me and left me with only two lives for Stage 6.

I have that problem too. I sometimes get it, but not always... Oh, and I'm almost guaranteed to die more than once on stages 6 & 7 too <_<;

I hit the 90m on my 1cc.  For only the second time, but I can get the 70m one pretty consistently...

I'll try another run if I have time tonight, which I don't, but I might anyway.  Of course, that'll likely crash anyway, but I'll try.

I pretty much always hit 50,000,000 now. 70,000,000 not always. 90,000,000 never, but I've gotten close twice.

The idea is to use level 2's when you don't think you can dodge in order to preserve a chain. Also, lower tier characters will score better because the AI survives longer against them. All my highest scoring runs on Lunatic were with Komachi. Also use level 2 a lot if the AI is on their last life for some extra points or if you're at a full bar. Faster characters help to kill stuff quickly to keep the chain. Komachi really is good for that with her level 1 spam.


My best Lunatic Aya score was a bit over 30,000,000. No I didn't 1cc with her and I don't plan to now. I only got over 50,000,000 with Medicine once. Their brokeness causes them to have less lives to use, which is why I couldn't 1cc with them.

Had 5 tries on Shikieiki again; I only made it to about 75 million, but I didn't die on Yuka to even it out.  Didn't 1cc, but I was playing terribly and I got killed by fairies coming from the bottom anyway.

I should clarify:  spam level 2s once you get the gauge up.  Firing them right away is going to get you killed, but later on they keep the chain going better than you can with level 1s and normal shots, and then become necessary for survival.  I chained my level 2s badly on Shikieiki and got hit on a couple of easier dodges, so I lost my gauge; the trick is to keep your counter as high as possible, so the chain keeps filling your gauge as fast as you can deplete it.  This works wonders with Cirno above all others because the freeze effect gives you much more time and yet more bullets to cancel into your gauge, filling it even faster.

...oh yeah, and the replay crashed again. >_<

I think I've hit 70m maybe once, if ever? Not on a 1cc, at any rate. Anywho, I just tried a random run with Reimu to see how well I scored, and 1cc'd without hitting the 70m. Bear in mind that I managed to do this starting the run at something like 2:45am so my reaction time was way lower than it usually is, resulting in a lot of derp moments.

To be honest, though, you don't even need that; my first 1cc only reached the 50m life and finished with a life to spare. Granted, I got pretty lucky, but still. :V

Past the first life, assuming you're using Reimu, you pretty much just want to be using level 2s and panic bombs. IMO, it's better to use the level 2s without waiting for the gauge to fill up, since 1. It allows you to hold them for when they're needed and release immediately, and 2. A constant barrage of level 2s while inside a cluster of bullets/spirits from Reimu will basically crush Shiki in a pretty short time period. My first 1cc had her go down in 1:55; the one just now had her down in only 1:39 (it was pretty unsatisfying seeing her go down that fast, actually... I had a very '...wait, that's it?' moment). :V

The AI doesn't get crushed, it simply gets bored of dodging everything.
