IaMP > PoFV > PCB > EoSD > IN > MoF > StB > everything else > SA

I think of the gameplay of PCB and EoSD pretty equally, but I like the music and patterns in PCB a tad bit more.

Once, someone told me I didn't complain about the difficulties, but that may be because I never found a suitable place to voice my opinions.  I don't see the rage thread as a good place to bash multiple aspects of the game, and I don't believe I've ever had a single instance in the playthroughs that would be annoying enough to warrant bringing up, let alone in a fit of rage (Kogasa's first spell was a side comment).

Anyway, I can't pass up an opportunity to praise some of the games even though it'll inevitably lead to downranking some of them, possibly crumbling down to a long list of whining.  Let's get started!

Top:

Perfect Cherry Blossom

Lots of bias being the first game I was introduced to, so some parts I might be perfectly fine with may be brought up as a downside for other games.  Or maybe it really fits together that well after playing this more than the rest of the games combined.  I enjoy all the little cogs that make up the cherry system and how it is influenced by many factors, factors that you can control to an extent.  A cute little portable shield in addition to lives dropping like candy, making it easy to clear and move on to trying out new risks.  Ignoring the gameplay for once I find that the stages build up nicely to the very end.  Music fits right in.

Not much to say about Easy and Normal right now.  I've hardly conquered either but currently Hard and Lunatic have more room for improvement by simply dodging better.  From the standpoint of an intermediate player the scoring system doesn't really step on your toes when you spend lives and bombs (again, just Hard/Lunatic).  Blow away any troublesome spells!  Most of them have a low spell bonus potential and the bomb will contribute to the border.  Same for standard deaths opening the way to full power bonus effects.

Undefined Fantastic Object

Could I also be biased for this because it's the first new game I've seen since trying this series?  Whether or not that's the case I love the malleability of the UFO system.  Oh, there's something in common with PCB!  Granted, all these games are going to be boiled down to a science and it turns into a planned route for scoring / 1CC attempt, but at least there's more freedom in a game like this if only to play it for the sake of playing *something*.

Easy and Extra are really the main points of interest so far.  All the other difficulties remain largely unexplored, but these two difficulties are enough to handle for the time being.  The entire Extra stage has me sold.  The beginning part for so many other Extras is streaming or static stuff like SA, but this here is lovely freeform dodging.  I don't mind restarting to see this.  Two of the midboss spells call for some (relatively) faster action and the noncards are far from stale.  Lots of freebie spells and the moderately difficult ones are closer to 'just right' than anything else I can think of for an Extra.  Plus, nice large spell bonuses!

I don't know what it is about the Easy difficulty for this game, but it isn't the same level of tiredness as SA Easy's grazing.  Maybe it's because there's more moving around, more repositioning, and the music keeps me up better in this game.  There's a little leeway in the beginning for making a life-costing mistake if you're not a perfectionist, but then misses are just as deadly as in SA.  Still, you're moving around a lot in this and working with the UFO summons, very much awake.

Spoiler:
I really need to get back into this game, as simple as picking it up and playing, but the partial score.dat wipe still has me in a slump.  There's so much obligation to fix up the Easy and Extra record even if the proof is on the tables.  Well, more on Easy.  Talked so much about it then dropping it again.  I fear the wrath of the mentor and the guilt is quickly growing now.

Subterranean Animism

Oh no, I'm drawing a blank.  Let's see...all I can say is it's a decent game and deserves to be in the upper tier of this list.  I think it comes down to the fact that there's a lot of freedom to move around (well, that's in all the games?), it's on a new engine, and the grazing system is back.  Just...none of the other games handle grazing like this.  The bombs don't let it, it doesn't exist, or in UFO's case it's tied more to scoring.  Sure, so is this but you now have the auto-POC aspect.  Which...really ties to scoring also.  I don't know!  It's new, all the games have something new, but I enjoy this particular new feature.  Fly around, touch bullet clusters, follow lasers, and goodies will fly into your possession.

Now, the scoring if it wasn't already mentioned enough already.  Again, I tend to stay with the lower difficulties be it from current skill level or just no desire to work on the higher ones.  Easy and Normal do have that 'no-miss except for the beginning' standard, else one suffers a deathblow to their score.  I feel there's less hindrance to prevent such a death by bombing.  The spell bonus is still small and there isn't major damage to the point item count after ending a spell like in MoF.  Hard and Lunatic aren't so severely impacted by deaths and it won't have such a terrible psychological counter.  I guess I may tire of it the more I go into grazing attacks, but there's no drive to do so and I'm happy playing this game to play it.

Mystic Square (honorable mention)

Only because the topic is asking for the order and I play this game infrequently, but with this tier system it's going up here.  You know what, I was going to veer off the gameplay again to give a plus to the music but that's the case for all four of these games.  Most of them are pleasing to hear and no doubt icing on the cake.  Or a third of the cake itself.  Is it convenient that the perceived decent gameplay has nice music to complement, or do they interchange?

No qualms with the stages except for on Lunatic where everything has the potential to launch a bullet at you when they're two-thirds down the screen.  Lots of flying around to pick up stuff, very good.  Nice buildup throughout the game, attacks are relatively sparse but makes sure the bullets count, intense but short-lived.  Extra stage has a very good atmosphere.

Middle:

The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

I appreciate its straightforward attacks but the randomness of some of those attacks along with boss movements can swing it to either end of the difficulty slider.  UFO Lunatic may be supremely difficult but that's all.  This game, on the other hand, is...hum.  Mixed feelings about the rank system and I'll leave it at that.  Large support for the Extra stage.  Again with the straightforward attacks and quick boss battles.

No strong opinion about the scoring system which is another reason why it's here in the middle.  Pretty close to SA with the amount of time invested, maybe a little more.

Shoot the Bullet (honorable mention)

The game doesn't click with me and so lack of dedication leaves a low overall score.  No strong feelings for it as a whole.

Lotus Land Story (another honorable mention)

Something like what was said for StB.  Very short middle tier list.  Well actually, the music was good but only a few of the stage portions are memorable.  Extra stage is quirky.

Phantasmagoria of Flower View (another)

Definite blank.

Bottom:

Imperishable Night

Something about the pacing of the first three stages that's off.  Fifth stage is a complete drag, fourth and sixth are troublesome for reaching the POC.  The fourth stage issue could be remedied with enough practice like PCB, but I'm already put off by the game so very little time goes into it.  Kaguya's battle is complete blah.  Just like Remilia's battle walls can surface here and there but this time you have to put up with it much longer before the attack ends.  Fourth noncard looks like it should be there to catch your breath but makes me fall asleep.

I guess a life by itself doesn't have a major impact to the score but to not complete this game with max lives is an eyesore.  Only room for one mistake and if you're chasing for points that extend isn't going to come in the middle of Kaguya's battle, unlike PCB's 1,400 mark.  I think her first four last spells are absolutely fine but not in a full run with the 'if you suck' threat because we're going to crush your score at the very end.  Easy is the only difficulty I can stand for but then there's the huge bonus from supergrazing her fourth last spell.  One day it'll click but not anytime soon when you don't try it for months at a time.

Mountain of Faith

Forgot to lump it in with IN, but neither of these have a great deal of memorable soundtracks.  Feels too linear, poor final spell for stage one and two bosses, Kanako's second spell is worse on Normal and Hard than Lunatic, Aya's first and second spell are just as bad or worse on Normal than Hard and Lunatic, ridiculous survival, Extra boss is difficult for the wrong reasons.  And this is where I conveniently overlook some of the attacks from PCB like endstage Youmu's first two spells and the Prismriver Sisters' final, but they feel a little fairer.  Oh, is that it?  It just feels right, right.

The scoring system, while not as bad as the item rigging in Mario Kart Wii, isn't my cup of tea.  As mentioned in SA there's more inhibition when it comes to bombing during boss fights later in the game because this game actually has a sizable spell bonus and you're going to take another point item hit when you're no longer at 5.00 power.  Did I complain enough about some of the attacks out there?  No peace, not even in Easy.  Still, both of these games get more playtime than any of the honorable mentions.

Complain, complain, and it wasn't put together that well.  Most of the energy disappeared after the beginning.  I wasted too much time.  This really is too long.  Why the hell did I do that?  Just...oh damn it.  Some words are repeated too much also.

No really, that has to be it.  None of the attacks last quite as long as those in Imperishable Night.  PCB comes close but at least you're working with the cherry system.  No more edits, I'm going to kill myself for spending the last 50 minutes typing this.

I've only played the Windows danmaku games, so here's my list

1) MoF (My first "real" game. Loved it since the first time i played it. Only first stage i haven't gotten sick of, even though I've played it well over 1000 times)
2) EoSD (This game just grew on me I have no idea why. It's one of the games I play the most)
3) SA (I had really forgotten how much I like SA after so long without playing it)
4) PCB (It's a very decent game. I have my moments of rage with it, but it has my second favorite soundtrack)
5) IN (Definitely the one I play least in this list apart from StB and PoFV. It just doesn't really appeal to me other than having my favourite soundtrack)
6) UFO (I definitely hate this game. It makes me rage in levels I never thought I was capable of. I've broken keyboards because of it)
7) StB (It's fun for a while, then it becomes pretty boring. I like coming back to it once a month just to see how much I've improved and capturing scenes on first try that I couldn't do before)
8) PoFV (I really see no fun in this game. This was the first Touhou game that I've ever played, and it gave me a bad impression. I only "discovered" Touhou again a year later and thank God I had forgotten about my first experience)

1: Imperishable Night. Spell Practice is awesome, Extra stage is fun. (It's the only extra stage I've beaten.) Stages 4-6 are really fun. Last Words are cool because It's fun to try to unlock and beat them. Death Bombing is great, it means I don't have to spam bombs and can actually enjoy the dodging.
2: UFO. It's just great, lot's of good shot types to choose from, I like collecting UFO's, yeah...
3: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. Stages 4-6 are really fun, and Flandre is awesome.
4: Perfect Cherry Blossom. It's just fun, nothing special.
5: MoF. see pcb
6: SA. Pretty much hate all shottypes, but the stages are fun.
7: pofv. Haven't yet completely figured out the gameplay mechanics, but I enjoy it.
8. Shoot the Bullet. I pretty much hit a brick wall, I can no longer progress. It was fun for a while.

I have played the pc98 games, but I am not very into them.

I like StB a lot (despite the fact that you play as Aya and I hate her speed), but I agree that it's not the kind of game you just pick up and play. I've beaten every scene and I don't think I've touched it since.

I will just do PC-98

LSS > MS > PoDD >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SoEW >= HRtP

LSS
Great Game, Great Music, the shot types are not that good exept MarisaA, which is TOO good
YukaYukaYukaYukaYuka

MS
Eye Rape on stage 4, but it starts having patterns, good shot types, even Yuka, can't stand Marisa, good music on stage 1,3,6, Extra.

PoDD
Good Music, yeah, but I find Strawberry Crisis!! a bit...boring..., but Yumeni is FFFFFFFFF(L)UCK
Good shot types too, no focus is BLEH but HYPER MODE + Bombs is a plus compared to PoFV
Aya and Marisa(moonlight ray, oblique lasers) got pretty inspired by Chiyuri, well, all PoFV attacks are pretty inspired by PoDD.
CUTE GHOST + CUTE STARS + CUTE HEART + CUTE MOONS are bad designed but fun if they are nor blue/purple.
Oh and the WARNIGblabla ping pong sessions are pretty lolable too.

SoEW
...

HRtP
WHAT ? can't pass stage 5 without continuing on easy, with full lifes/bombs, IS SUCK AT IT AS MUCH AS STB >_<

Copying Heartbeam's format because I feel like posting a decent amount of material for each of these games.

Top:

Mountain of Faith

MoF is at the top of list for a number of reasons. First of all, and this is the most important reason, the spell cards are well thought out, clean, and do not require vast amounts of micro-memorization. The scoring system is kind of messed up, but at it makes up for it with the bombing system. The spell cards could also last a bit longer in my opinion, and they are really the main essence of this game and are just way too underrated when you put things in perspective. The music track is actually mediocre, but it's not so bad that it bothers you after a certain point. A generally clean game, with the original, bright Touhou feel.

Subterranean Animism

SA is also near the top, but because of its great execution and creativity. SA also has a very unique feeling because of the dark underground theme, which acts as a very good method to driving the climax to stage 6. The spell cards are, for the most part, very well done. Clean, but most of all, extremely creative. There are a few that are relatively cheap, but it makes up for it with the spell themes, especially the Extra stage. Using psychology as a spell card theme was one of the best ideas ZUN had. Music was moderately good, as it gave a nice ambient vibe. In addition, the grazing system is back, which in my opinion works very well for scoring and overall feel.

Phantasmagoria of Flower View (2-player mode)

This is an absolutely outstanding 2-player, or even party game. The system is very well-balanced, and the sheer randomness makes it a game of incredible replay value. I dare say that if given a few more options, this game could rival Super Smash Bros. Unfortunately though, this only applies to 2-player mode, as the fun lies completely in the factor that you're playing against someone. 1-player is incredibly dull, and I would rather watch paint dry than play it (not really, but you get the point).

Middle:

Perfect Cherry Blossom

In my opinion, this is the quintessential Touhou game. It embodies that bright Touhou feel in a standard shell that comes with everything: a unique scoring system (cherry points), quality spell cards, nostalgic music, and memorable characters. This is the game that I think about when I think Touhou. The only reasons it's not near the very top is because there is a certain unfairness to some cards and the feel is quite old and not as refined as the future games. However, it is still excellent and should be recommended to all new Touhou players.

Undefined Fantastic Object

After the initial disappointment of the demo, who would've thought that ZUN would make up for it with the later stages? The overall feel is very contemporary, and much brighter and luminous than ever. Unfortunately, this style sacrificed good music (UFO music is very awkward and strange) and comfortable gameplay to being unique. The UFO system is very unforgiving and much too annoying to have in a game such as this. The stages, however, are vastly improved from most other games because you have many more opportunities for freeform dodging, rather than the traditional streaming. Spell cards are unique, but unfortunately recede back to the old style in the sense that some cards are inherently cheap due to odd designs or abuse of CURVED LASERS. Overall though, not too bad.

The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

This game is very straightforward in most aspects, probably because it's fairly old, but it's still a decent game as a whole. Music is very very nostalgic and the feel is very sophisticated because of the mansion theme. Rank system is a bit cheap and the sheer randomness and power of some spell cards is overwhelming, but it's still fantastic for reasons I can't particularly articulate.

Shoot the Bullet

This game is interesting. Initially, it's a very good way to new players to practice and gain skill very quickly, but later on, it becomes a bunch of nonsensical BS of unthinkable power and density. Music especially, gets annoying after a while. There's also not much of a selection of playability, but at least it's very well-rounded. So overall, it's not too bad. Definitely recommended for those new to bullet hells as a supplement though.

Bottom:

Imperishable Night

There are so many things wrong with this game, despite its unique dual-player action and clean execution. First of all, the jump in difficulty between 3 and 4 is even greater than that of MoF. In addition, many of the spell cards require micro-memorization, which is a huge buzzkill, since you have to replay everything so many times. Music is also, for the most part, below average. It's nothing but speed. No especially recognizable melodies except a handful, and chords are very static. Seems like a great game initially, but is just simply not worth the game time.

PC-98 games don't count because I don't play them often at all.

No idea why I don't like IN, but I think it has something to do with the whole space-y atmosphere and the claustrophobic danmaku.

Or maybe it's because I played it WAY too much when I was new.

1. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil

After a year of playing Touhou, somehow I always radiate back to EoSD. It's taken me quite a while to figure out why, but I think I have the answer. First of all, it's just plain simpler. Scoring is very easy to understand - the most complicated thing in terms of a high score is killing a spellcard with max bullets on the screen. Second of all, the difficulties are consistent. With some of the later games, there's weird inconsistencies in some parts(hello MoF). Third, the game itself is easier in a lot of respects. While that マソ in my title might say something about me, I've always gotten enjoyment out of being able to do well in this game. Finally, the characters are the most well-known in all of Touhou.

2. Imperishable Night

For its utter beauty. The sound effects, visual effects, music... they're all perfect, and ZUN has yet to rival IN in terms of these things. The story may not be much, but it's more than most Touhou games. Also, I love the huge character selection, and the whole fighting Reimu or Marisa in stage 4 thing.

3. Subterranean Animism

Fucking hard, but fucking fun to play regardless until Rin. The music is actually really great, and the option selection and supergrazing elements I find amazing. Supergrazing just because a lot of stuff in the game is designed around that aspect of it, so there was a lot of cool patterns.

4. Perfect Cherry Blossom

For the nostalgia lol

5. Undefined Fantastic Object

I like this game, I really do, I just like other ones more. ;D

6. Mountain of Faith

ugghhhh

Nothing else gets a mention mainly because I don't play the fighting games, PoFV, or the PC-98 games. I didn't throw StB up there because it's hard to compare and I'm not really a fan of Spell Practice.

Excluding the first five and IaMP, as I've never played them:

10. Shoot the Bullet
It's hard, boring, and you're forced to play as my least favorite character.

9. Phantasmagoria of Flower View
The lack of patterns in the bullets kills the whole sense of it being a Touhou game. To me, it's just another tourney-style shmup

8. Unidentified Fantastic Object
The new system of power up and UFO system of Lifes/Bombs can either make the game too hard to too easy in my opinion. I like very few of the new characters introduced.

7. Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil
The only reason this is higher up is because it was one of the first two I played. A few characters catch my eye, but not many of them. What really kills it for me is the lack of a seeable hitbox and the fact the handguards on Sakuya's knives can freaking kill you. Does she really throw them THAT bone-breakingly hard?

6. Scarlet Weather Rhapsody
I've never been a big fan of fighter games, so this goes here. Would be higher up if not for Typhoon.

5. Unthinkable Natural Law
As like SWR, this would be higher up if not for Typhoon. It's saving grace? You can play as Utsuho. Case Closed.

4. Imperishable Night
Three words: Individual Spellcard Practice. Three more words: Last Word Spells.

3. Mountain of Faith
It's the first game I ever 1cc'd. I love the majority of the characters but I'm not such a big fan about the backgrounds... they make it somewhat hard to focus on your hitbox.

2. Perfect Cherry Blossom
To me, this is a fairly laid back Touhou being one of the easier ones in my opinion. The weapons for the playable characters are all very nice and the music is some of the best in my books.

1. Subterranean Animism
As this is all opinion, here it is: ZUN will never best it. The characters are all quite awesome and their cards strike very good notes in terms of beauty. When fighting a boss, this is the only game I will not be angered to get killed mercilessly in. It has the best music I've heard thus far in a Touhou game (Stage three themes specifically) and a final boss that completely shoves all before her out of the way in terms of awesome.

Hum...

1. EoSD.  No gimmicks, no hitbox, just solid Touhou.  Awesome.  Sakuya is worth awesome points as well.
2. LLS.  To quote DGBarca: YukaYukaYukaYukaYuka.  Also probably the fairest after EoSD.  And has some seriously great music (Sleeping Terror, Inanimate Dream, Cute Devil, Alice Maestra, etc.)
3. IN.  While still the easiest (on all difficulties not Lunatic), IN has some fun parts that other games seem to have forgotten about (like the word "fun"), a whole lot of depth to the partner system (even if the Magic Team is screwed), and some of the best music, such as Reach for the Moon, though I'm inclined to give best in the series more and more to LLS these days.
4. MS.  I've started preferring the PC-98 ones recently, mostly because they were damn good.  MS has a bunch of fun stuff (though Stage 2 sucks, sorry), and it has Shinki, which is sweet.  Of course, it's also considerably more difficult than LLS (Lunatic 1cc is a long way off), but the difficulty is unfortunately staggered almost entirely over Yumeko and Shinki, so...
5. MoF.  Bombspam aside, MoF does have some great patterns and fun parts to it, as well as some more of the better tracks.  Unfortunately, it has Aya.  And Source of Rains.  And all of Stage 4.  And Aya.
6. SA.  I really don't appreciate the direction ZUN's been taking with the last couple games, because they are much less about fun and more about you dying a lot.  That said, SA does have parts which are still fun (until Lunatic), so it takes sixth.
7. PCB.  Despite it being my first 1cc, and me recently getting the Vsync patch, I honestly do not care for PCB all that much.  The bullet patterns are very rarely fun to dodge or capture, and the stages and Extras are just...bleh.  Still has great tracks, but there are also a bunch of forgettable ones as well.
8. SoEW.  This is where the games stop being fun and degenerate into "Oh, come ON" territory.  SoEW's giant bullets and no deathbomb or focus mean you die a lot to things you don't expect, and it's just not fun.  The music is also weaker on the whole, though admittedly it was only the second Touhou.
9. PoDD.  OH LOL KOTOHIME'S ALL LIKE I KILL YOU  Seriously though, PoDD is random crap.  Does have awesome stuff like Vanishing Dream, Reincarnation and Strawberry Crisis!!, but that doesn't redeem the gameplay.
10. PoFV.  See PoDD, but worse on the whole.  Also less awesome music, though Flower Land and Spring Lane are big winners.
11. UFO.  UFO Lunatic is complete and utter idiocy.  It's not fun, it's not cool, and it's not worth my time.  Even Hard is pushing that limit.  Terrible power system, finicky, annoying UFOs, and LOL YOU DIE NOW crap all over the place.  At least the music's good, though there are no first-placers in UFO.
12, and the only one that can out-stupid UFO: tHRtP.  Go to hell, physics!  But only if I take the Makai route!  If I go to hell, then you must go to Makai!  You're not allowed in my game!  Yeah, screw it.

...but wait!
13.  StB!  Because nothing is stupider than playing as freakin' Aya with no shot, no bomb, and no lives!  It's Spell Practice, but to no point!  IT OUT-STUPIDS THE HIGHLY RESPONSIVE TO PRAYERS AND UFO, FOR MORIYA'S SAKE.

Excluding the first five and IaMP, as I've never played them:

10. Shoot the Bullet
It's hard, boring, and you're forced to play as my least favorite character.

9. Phantasmagoria of Flower View
The lack of patterns in the bullets kills the whole sense of it being a Touhou game. To me, it's just another tourney-style shmup
Gotta agree with StB. PoFV is actually quite nice, even though a little(read: very much) unfair. The random bullet rain is a nice change from the constant patterns.

1. PoFV
2. StB
3. UFO
4. IN
5. SA

That's it for me, I rarely play the other games.

I'd rather practice a game instead of hating it, so I have to say I enjoy all games equally.
Yes, even HRtP and StB.

1. Mountain of Faith. It was my first Touhou game, so it has a special place in my heart. I still love the music, too.

2. Undefined Fantastic Object. I do like the scoring system. It's very challenging. Mostly I like the color scheme in this game.

3. Shoot the Bullet. Can't stop playing. It is so maddeningly addictive. And probably one of the most clever bullet hell ideas ever.

4. Subterranean Animism. The graphics are amazing. It's nice for a dark theme without it being too macabre.

5. Imperishable Night. The pairings are fine, but it's the night mood of the game, and the music, that really do it for me.

6. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil. This game fascinates me because you can actually watch, stage by stage, as ZUN moves away from PC-98 shot patterns and discovers some of the techniques that would become mainstays in later Touhou games.

7. Perfect Cherry Blossom. The cherry points are pretty fun, and the Stage 5 theme is just fantastic.

8. Any of the PC-98 games. They're awesome. They remind me of the games I used to play on Atari in the 80s. That nostalgic feel is really nice.

9. Immaterial and Missing Power. I'm not a huge fan of fighting games, to be honest. This one can be fun for a little while, but I've never felt motivated to try and beat it.

10. Phantasmagoria of Flower View. Another game I play for a few minutes and then stop. Still, I bought the CD, just on general principle.

And I've never gotten SWR to work, so yeah.

Scoring is very easy to understand - the most complicated thing in terms of a high score is killing a spellcard with max bullets on the screen.
EoSD's scoring confuses me. It's not quite that simple. Grazing's the biggest part of scoring, that part I know from replays: it's not only for end-game bonuses but also for bullet-cancel points. How exactly does it work, though? Touhou Wiki is not being so illuminating here (it explains the mechanics, but it doesn't really match up to the Japanese scoreruns I've watched)

to be on-topic IaMP for competitiveness (acceptable fighter netplay too!), PoFV for craziness, lunatic match mode and party-game value and EoSD for no-frills fun.

I'll get back to you on the PC-98.  I don't have enough experience with them compared to the windows to make a proper conclusion.  I don't think I can properly compare the fighting games to the danmaku ones too.

1. EoSD.  One of my personal favorites.  It's so simple and so predictable, but there's just a perfect element of randomness to combat the predictability that you get a solid game.
2. MoF no bomb spam (or even no bombs).  If you don't bomb spam this game, then you end up with some very cool looking patterns and relatively difficult spell cards.  Some of the patterns here are absolutely beautiful to just watch.
3. UFO.  I haven't played UFO Lunatic so I'm probably missing out on a whole new dimension of the game here, but I consider it to be pretty high up there.  It's definitely an interesting game in the sheer difficulty of the patterns, and the relative novelty of some of the patterns.  Apart of just an abuse of lasers, it's very fun to play through, especially Stages 4 and beyond.  Sometimes you want to strangle some of the early bosses for being ridiculously hard though.  I think the patterns balance it out.
4. SA.  SA is pretty fun.  It is fairly tricky, and some of the patterns are just pure WTF factors, but I think that's the draw of it.  ZUN really broke from the status quo of Touhou to make this one, and I think it really worked.  It doesn't break into the top tier for me only because I think the UFO system is much more novel and keeps things fresh in that game while SA doesn't.
5. PCB.  It's down here because everything else is so much better.  This game has extremely straight forward stages that culminate in boss battles that... well... aren't exactly fun...  The best one I would say is the Primsriver sisters one, just because of its variability and vastly different danmaku patterns.  Everything beyond that feels rather bland to me.  Youmu is just throw bunches of stuff at you and give you more reaction time.  Yuyuko feels like a rehash of other patterns, and the only thing that really sets her apart is the butterfly danmaku, that only serves to confuse you while being exactly the same as just a normal ball danmaku.  Seriously?  Is that the best you can do ZUN?
6. IN.  This one has some of the densest danmaku of any Touhou game, but that's kind of what ends up killing it.  You end up with a game of getting away by the skin of your teeth, and that was never attractive to me.  One of my main issues with this game is the pure awkwardness of the Stages.  First stages are so boring and there is really no interesting attacks or spell cards to slow it down.  But then you end up with the Reimu/Marisa battle, that feels completely different from everything prior.  The Keine battle had more or less staple patterns to the Touhou series, but this one just throws a big wrench into that.  Stage 5 throws just tons of shit at you.  I don't mean in a good way.  It just throws danmaku with seemingly no regard to pattern or anything.  Combine that with a boss that has some of the most uninspired danmaku for a Stage 5 boss in the series (it seemed like a good idea when you first see it, but then it becomes just bleh), and Stage 6 bosses that don't really fit with any other boss, and you end up with a game that doesn't really have a clear goal in mind.  The time system also drives me crazy.  You have to actually be consciously aware and have to plan out before the stage when you're going to stay human and when to switch to Youkai.  Then you have to make sure that you are human when you get the time points so you don't end up getting 100% Youkai from defeating enemies with familiars and bla;hfd;alfjd...
7. MoF with bombs.  Man MoF with bombs feels so boring and sad because bombs trivialize the entire thing.
8. PoFV.  This game is just unfair.  The AI is just a "wat"?  Also, why are there no patterns?  It's just pure dodging.  That's no fun!
9.  StB.  Epic fail.  The system is confusing, the gameplay is counter intuitive, the premise is absolutely sad, and it's just boring.  Yes there are patterns, and that's a plus, but half of the fun in Touhou is seeing cohesion.  And this game has none.

I could probably expand a lot more on pretty much every game, but oh well.

As far as I know, yeah, if your going for a high score, you definitely need to be grazing. (Note that I said "most complicated", not "most important"). What do you get, like 10 or 100 times your graze amount in points? Dunno. Bullet-cancel points'(what I meant when I said "lots of bullets on the screen") values in themselves aren't too important, though, just that you get lots of the star items. Which isn't limited to just spellcards; there's that part in stage 4... >_>

Seems simple enough to me. No cherry to keep track of, no UFO progression to memorize, no temptation to do something dumb like supergraze into bullets or go for faith and die. Pure and simple.

1) PoFV - I love the random free-style danmaku gameplay. I thrive on random.
2) StB - Fun cards and also holds the single best musical piece in the entire series (imo), Sleepless Night of the Eastern Country.

The rest (including the PC-98 games) are more or less a shapeless blob below those two. I don't really play any other besides them since they take care of all my STG needs. :)

I know I'm in the minority here but all you people who love IN's spell practice/last words and ignore/dislike/hate StB don't make sense. At all.

Hey, I did like StB until I got to a point where I just flat out couldn't progress...
