Calculating graze?
« on: November 02, 2016, 01:51:54 AM »
Hi all, relative newbie here. I apologize if this thread exists in some form, but I was unable to find it when conducting a search.

I just got my copy of EoSD in the mail yesterday, and I've been happily working my way through it. However, I was wondering how graze points are calculated. I know graze is usually a core component of the player score, but I didn't always notice my graze total going up when I thought it would. I naively assumed it accrued whenever a bullet passed through the player sprite bounding box but missed the true hit box, but is that the case? Essentially, how close is close? Is it determined differently in each game?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Grazing occurs when the player hitbox is within a certain distance of a bullet's hitbox. Since you've only played EoSD so far, maybe you haven't yet noticed how small your hitbox actually is? EoSD doesn't have a visible player hitbox like later games. Bullets also have slightly smaller hitboxes than their graphics-- you can often pass through the edges of them without dying.

I think the graze box has slightly increased between engines, by the way. As in, you have the smallest grazing range in LLS/MS, slightly larger in EoSD to IN, and noticeably larger in SA onward. In UFO onward it also depends on the player's hitbox-- since Reimu has a smaller hitbox, she also has a smaller graze region.

OK, so the required distance to trip graze is set internally in the code and varies by game and by character. That makes sense. Thanks!  :)

I have played demos of some of the later games in the series (TD, DDC, LoLK) so I do appreciate how those games reveal the true hitbox when in focus mode. Like you said, not so in EoSD or the PC-98 games. Le sigh.

OK, well, back to sealing youkai. Thanks for the pointers!

If you feel like you're having a hard time playing without a visible hitbox, I'm pretty sure there's unnoficial patches out there which give the player characters a visible HB.  Not exactly certain where nowadays, but I think the EoSD article on touhou wiki has one of them.  Good luck nonetheless!

I don't think it's in good practice to use the hitbox patch, personally. There are visual cues for your hitbox in every single game, EoSD included, and that should give you a good enough feel for where your hitbox is.

Thank you both! I'll keep that in mind. I have seen those patches available, but I'll probably just keep the vanilla version for now and do my best to git gud.

On a somewhat-related note, some of TouhouWiki's links seem to be broken (e.g. the link to the EoSD English patch, which I had to go dig up from a cached copy of the site that hosted it). Is the best practice to let them know about things like that, or would we expect them to find/fix that on their own?

Gensokyo.org is pretty much dead, don't bother. Try to configure THCrap for use on all of your games, or just make do with the regular Japanese game. You aren't missing out on much when untranslated anyway.

I don't think the patcher supports EoSD yet? Something about it being in a much more difficult to modify format.

The EoSD retexture patch apparently includes the old translation patch, so you could try that out I suppose. The old translation isn't very well written, but it's at least nice to see spell names.

I've managed to get it to work with EoSD in combination with the sandbox patch (you need to select both "lang-en" and "sandbox"). I actually have this patch recorded in practice here, and you can clearly see the differences between the old and new translation patches. This patch however has a few instances where spell card names and sizes aren't exactly the same, but it's not much of an issue.

I think thcrap natively supports th06 these days. I completely reinstalled thcrap a couple weeks ago, and it was able to pick up the Japanese 東方紅魔郷.exe when it didn't recognize it before. It won't detect the english patched exe, though.

Speaking of which, I've attached the old english patch here. Maybe someone else can reupload it.
