Let's assume for now that the sounds we're hearing are gunshots as opposed to fireworks or whatever.
The fact that the sounds came in several groups in quick succession and also sometimes came in single shots suggests that the weapon is at least semi-automatic as opposed to bolt-action/pump-action (the action of cycling the bolt or pumping the pump would probably take more than a second), and that it's got a capacity of several rounds (at least ten, I'd guess).
In other words... It could be a submachine gun, an semi/full-auto shotgun, a semi/full-auto rifle, a semi-automatic pistol, or even a machine gun...
However, I doubt it would be very easy to fire just a single round from an automatic weapon unless there was a 'semi' setting on it (I've only ever fired guns in videogames so correct me if I'm wrong), which suggests a semi-automatic weapon.
But if the shooter was experienced, they might be able to let off just a single round at a time, so the weapon might be fully-automatic after all...
Not sure how useful this actually is, but just putting my thoughts down.

Like I said, I have no idea if the thoughts I've put down will be of any use. But the fact the shots were sometimes fired in short bursts means it's not the ~~shot~~shopkeeper (unless the shotgun were semi/full-auto).
