Your favorite fan-made character?
« on: November 28, 2015, 04:44:44 AM »
We all have our favorite characters. But those are all official characters, so I've decided to ask the question...
Who are your favorite fan-made characters?

Mine is Sugar Satellite, the Fairy Of Perception. See here. Sugar's basically the so-called fourth member of the Three Mischievous Fairies, and her ability is described as "Manipulation of Perception".
Quote from: Touhou Wiki
Sugar has the ability to manipulate one's perception at her own will. She uses it for pranks when someone comes nearby to make them have a different feeling in the atmosphere, or to make them feel that a certain object was around from the beginning. it is completely harmless to humans, but if used around places known for youkai, humans will start to feel fear. There's one weakness to this ability, and that weakness is that it cannot remove foot sounds or form of any kind, so once you feel something's wrong and you turn around, you'll see Sugar with a surprised look on her face, and her prank fails.
The (un)official description of her ability says so, but in my mind, Sugar's ability is probably like Koishi's but can be applied to things other than herself, with the potential to fool even cameras.
Other than that, she's quite a cute girl in comparison to all other fan-made characters out there. Another reason for my liking her.
There's nothing inscribed on the dog tag...

Now I am quite biased with this one as I am only familiar with one fan-made character, that being Miko Hakurei.  That being said, I do like the mystery behind her as well as how she kind of gives Reimu more significance as a character for it is as if she follows a legacy (always have been a fan of that).  I also like to think of her as Reimu's mentor of sorts,
I just know what I know...

I suppose EX-Rumia counts here.
I'm not really in fan-made characters, but another one i like is Mumumu Mikaboshi, although i never played the games she appears in.

Man, I wish I could say I enjoyed fan-made characters/OCs, but they're usually wish fulfillment self-inserts and Mary Sues. Like almost 100% of the time. I mean I could set my watch to "is cheerful and laid-back, unless angered, and then she will fight with everything she has and is fiercely loyal to her friends".

Sorry, just had to let that out. If there's an actual well-developed OC, I would love to see it.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but would this be one of them?

Argh...this reminds me that I've seriously got to update her profile. The description on that one was just a brief and condensed overview and does little justice to all the stuff relating to this character like how she's partially based off the Cthulhu Mythos and is an Eldritch abomination born of people's fear of government conspiracies. She also doesn't have any ears.

Ha, no, I wasn't singling anyone out. Just being grumpy and critical. I enjoy enjoying things, so maybe I should get over it already.

I actually haven't seen too many original characters (mostly because, as Tengukami said, they tend to be poorly characterized and thus I avoid them most of the time), but I'd consider "Minerva Margatroid" from a story called "And what Alice Found There" to be a pretty decently written one, so I guess she'd win by default.

Not that that's necessarily saying much, mind you, because it took several minutes of trying to think of a single other fan made touhou character I've seen in any actual story before I came up with another.
The series has such a huge and diverse cast, with content producers being pretty willing to tweak or outright reinvent existing characters, that it's rarely necessary to resort to an OC in a story.
Even the standard "outsider gets brought into the setting, watch warmly as shenanigans ensue" premise can be filled with Maribel and/or Renko. Heck, half of the setup that tends to be shoehorned in in such stories is already written by their own circumstances.

I can't even remember very many of them, and most of the doujins I've read with original characters that do stand out only do so because they were abysmal failures. The one standout counterexample is Yokochou's character Youka Kazami. She's Yuuka's daughter, and she's just a derivative of Yuuka with an identical design but aged down, so I suppose she probably barely counts as original, but every story she's ever appeared in has been wonderful. It doesn't take much skill to pick a character, make a small version of them, and call it their offspring, but it does take a lot of skill to integrate a character like that as successfully as Yokochou has done. So for as much as Youka Kazami is basically just a prop to put Yuuka into different parenting-based scenarios, she immediately comes to mind for me as being the best Touhou OC I've ever read.
I made a PADHerder. It's probably out of date though.

It's hard to describe her as fan character, but that's a character that I like because for both canon and fanon things. I'm talking about Rin Satsuki.

So now, why do I like her so much ? Because I like the idea of a "good youkai". Of course, there are some helpful youkai in Gensokyo, but I wouldn't put them into the "sacred" category.(that part is mostly present in fanon works) She's a nurse and posses wind and flower power as well as playing a musical instrument. I would have been cool to have a recuring character who attacks with the help of music.
She's oftenly decipted as kind and cheerful, which I like a lot and contrast with the "bored" personnality of Reimu and "crazy" personnality of Marisa.(even though the two of them are different in 98)
Now there's something else that makes me like her, it's of course her situation of an "unused" and "forgotten" character. While she's considered as a cheerful and sacred character, she's also decipted as a "tragic youkai who could never exist", and honnestly, that's something I find very sad. She's . . . kind of existant because of the fanbase and will also stay unexistand, because she's semi canon, and her canon part consists only of some information about her . . . and that's something that will never change.
That's also an interesting thing in her, she's both fanon and canon. She's both lively and somewhat "dead". She's really interesting and touching.
I think that "Dreamy Pilot" that JynX gave her as a theme really suits her, an unused and sad song for an unused character.
