My sister: This is going to open the door for more FF characters in Smash.

Me: But they're not going to put in GIlgamesh. Or Vivi.

My Sister: I will write them an essay. Vivi should be in Smash because he's a lightweight character who uses magic like who else is, Ness? But he's not even supposed to be using that magic it's Paula's he's a thief also Vivi's really cute.
...well I guess Zelda. And a pokemon. But Vivi's better because he can use both Fire and Blizzara.

Still, it's kinda confusing that they pick the one not originating from a nintendo title to start with. I mean, at least Snake had the excuse of Metal Gear, a main title, having been on the NES, even as a watered-down port, and Sonic pretty much had a long history with nintendo. KH:CoM meanwhile, was pretty much just a side title wherein Cloud doesn't really play that much of a role.

Okay a more logical reason would be that the FF7 remake is probably going to be on the next Nintendo console and this is a way of promoting it

KH: CoM is a direct sequel to KH1 and a direct prequel to KH2 while also happening at the same time as days which also does have cloud in it *and* it's also in the NDS.

Plus, KH: Re: Coded which is also on the NDS and cloud has a fairly large role in one of the worlds.

Depends on your definition of "logical". In terms of theme, then sure an old-school Final Fantasy or Tactics Advance or something more closely tied to Nintendo would make sense. But from a purely business perspective nothing would generate the hype that a FFVII character would, and at the end of the day Nintendo is a business.

In fact the only thing that surprised me was no Sephiroth.

FFVII remake is on the way, and the original game is arguably the most popular of the franchise. Lots of people never even touched the first 6 games and would be like "Wait, who?" if they saw Cecil or Terra, whereas Cloud is instantly recognizable.

It is logical, at least from Square-Enix standpoint.

Be happy they didn't decide to go with Lightning.
