Internet in Gensokyo
« on: August 17, 2015, 07:08:10 AM »
So I'm going to ask this straight.

Is having internet in Gensokyo a good idea?
or
Should Gensokyo have internet?

Either way, what do you guys think?

One thing that I definitely worry about are video game/anime reviewers.  In Gensokyo, people actually do have the ability to hunt down and kill whenever they please (they better hope that they don't give Yukari's favourite game a bad rating).  In all seriousness however, part of me has a feeling that internet in Gensokyo would kind of take away most of the liveliness that I imagine it having, so I am rather conflicted.
I just know what I know...

I want to see their reaction to the H-doujin or Rule 34 about themselves.

One of the charming features of Gensokyo is that since there's no communication through electronics, people actually visit each other, and interact by going somewhere. With internet, Marisa wouldn't visit Reimu as often, and that just doesn't feel like Gensokyo. Hell, even Aya delivering the news is already nice.
That time, is breakfast time!

I doubt it would be that simple.
Even with scientific knowledge it would be really hard for them to be forgotten, since there are so many of them doing their things next to you, that you literally can't deny them being there. At most, some myths would be altered and some individuals would be weakened (i.e harvest gods would be less important if humans had a way to have always good harvests without relying on some god).
Also, science can't explain 99% of supernatural shit youkai and gods can cause, and that is right there under everyone's eyes.

Considering some supernatural paranormal experiences I have had and considering that I know tons and tons of science I doubt knowing science would make the youkai vanish altogether.  Well basically I am agreeing with PK on the grounds of some personal experiences I have had...

Oh, and I am curious about the various reactions to the rule 34 of all the Touhou girls.  Granted there are some that I don't think are mature enough to be subjected to it.

Well, Marisa will have a new source to "borrow" books from, for one thing.

Obviously, Yukari would install AdSense on Gensokyo's internet, and creating hundreds of thousands of additional filters would be trivially easy for her. In fact, since very, very few people in Gensokyo would even have a frame of reference for what the internet is, she could probably redirect all traffic to her personal server. Everyone would think they're communicating with and receiving things from the outside world, and Yukari would have them all fooled. That is, until Sanae let the cat out of the bag.

Well, on the night I met Alice I kind of introduced her to Danbooru and simply to contact her I would like the Gensokyans to have internet. I was lucky that there wasn't any porn on the page I showed her though - I don't think things would've gone quite as well if that happened.

Even if they did have internet though, how many of them have devices that can use it? It'd make magic a bit more easy to learn (if we take sumireko as an example) but also has the potential to disrupt the balance of Gensokyo with the influx of ideas from the outside world. I mean, things like football becoming popular in Gensokyo are minor additions from the outside world but if people start believing everything they see on the internet then the power of the youkai may lower to the point that Gensokyo just becomes another part of the outside world. Maybe it'd be best if they didn't have internet. I may want them to simply so I can contact Alice more often but at the potential of destroying gensokyo it may not be the best thing.

I'm pretty sure that all that would happen is that they would take one look at how wikipedia and snopes say they don't exist and go like "Ha, those outside world humans know nothing!".

And besides, isn't the point of gensokyo that its full of things not considered to be real in the real world?

Yeah it's meta in the sense that in-universe it's more that Gensokyo is for things that humans in the Outside World think don't exist [anymore], even if those things "do" exist in the Outside World but are attributed to other explanations. It's given as fact and unfalsifiable that they "exist", yet simultaneously it's unverifiable because every explanation is brushed away as something else; hence the need for Gensokyo in the first place. It's doubly-meta because outside the lens of in-universe itself, we acknowledge there couldn't possibly be any way for youkai to reestablish themselves on the outside and "do something that we can't brush off" since we know they don't exist. From our perspective it's a catch-22.

Even if the Internet was somehow available in Gensokyo, I doubt many people would be able to access it (possibly due to risk of further intrusion of things from Outsde that shouldn't be in Gensokyo). I could see Eientei, the kappa and the Moriya Shrine getting Internet access, but not the Human Village or the SDM, for example, and DEFINITELY not any outsiders.
