Up to just before the ship fight (aka Gilgamesh and Enkidu). The only real problems were the Puloboros fight (ugh Self-destruct) and the Big Bridge Gilgamesh battle (getting stomped on with a party that can't do something about his second phase stinks).

Sol Cannon, which i thought would be a problem, only took two tries, I went and got one Angel Ring in between those two, put it on one knight, and then killed the launchers before they could Old my other Knight (so max damage from two-handed Coral Swords), with Geomancers tossing Elixirs around after Surge Cannon blasts.

...And first-tried the other one I thought would be problematic - Archaeoavis, but being able to !Gaia with nothing but Wind Slash the first four forms and then pound on the last with my Knights worked well. I think I'm good until the Crystal Guardians (Atomos? I'll use the sleep sword until its added effect procs, and then pound him with !Gaia).
Did you bring a light?
...No...

Need help.

Rolled a Ranger, that means I'm stuck until I defeat Byblos.
How do I plan to defeat him with Monk/Time Mage team? Breaking rods are a bit pricey...

Pretty sure it only takes two Flame Rods to kill him. If you really don't want to break rods you can throw Slow and Demi on him until he's slowed and has taken a couple of Demi hits and then use !Focus attacks to finish him.

If you're worried about rod money, the forest next to Karnak gives a pretty easy mob (Wild Nakks) that drop about 280 gil per fight. So you can afford a new rod every 3 fights or so.

Wild Nakks are sitting ducks for !Kick since it'll hit all of them at once. Having a full party do it together will mean they should only get a few attacks off I wager? It should be pretty pain-free grinding.

It k bby Byblos seems to be pesty for a whole slew of people because of how hard he can hit. Roast and toast 'im.

HALLO and welcome to triangles' 4JF adventure!  I avoided rolling a Wind Crystal job, so we will be starting this party with Team No Job Siesta!
(seriously this has been kind of boring I don't know how you kids on Natural do this)

HALLO?

Never change, Gramps  Never change.

I actually went and bought some sharper, pointy-er sticks before heading into the Wind Shrine as this is the first year it made economic sense to do so (previous years were Monk and White Mage starts so those would be off the table very soon) This allowed me to take down Wing Raptor before he could go into his silly duck and cover mode.  Oops on taking a screenshot in time, this is a reoccurring theme.

No chocobro don't rub it in :(

However also unlike previous years, I forgot to grab something resembling a decent stock of potions along with my stash of pointy sticks and fashionable leather shirts and shields.  This may come to bite me in the Butz later on.

Karlabos will always be kind of a chump it's still PRESS A PRESS A PRESS A HIT SOME DIRECTION BUTTONS THEN PRESS A PRESS A HOORAY TIME TO RAISE YOUR ARMS IN THE AIR but he was being quite the pesty jerk and targeting HALLO? most of the time. How rude.

Yo Fryman this boat is pretty sweet but none of you better crash it into some frickin' haunted zombie death moat.

Damnit Meatwad.

Ship Graveyard wasn't too shabby, everything dies pretty quickly to the PRESS A PRESS A PRESS A strategy.

Battle commands I miss you  :ohdear:
In retrospect I realize I forgot to pick up the flail, but I don't think it's too big a loss as Mystic Knight can't use it, and ~who knows~ what class I get next.

bby no, sleep in the bed not over it.

And then comes Siren.

Lucky for us silence don't stop the stabby times.  This was a less than smooth battle, as she turned on Protect which leads to Team Why Isn't There An Auto Attack Feature Yet? doing peanuts for damage and as alluded before I didn't have too many potions to fling at her zombie form oops.  Faris wound up kicking the bucket and Galuf was in pretty bad shape at the end of the day so I hoofed it alllll the way back to Faris' boat to heal because I don't know why I didn't just leave and use the tent ok  :(

Great work friend!  Looking forward to winding up with Bard for the 3rd year running!

Next time for Team Unemployed Swords and Boards (hopefully streaming tonight??) I'll be trucking up North Mountain and beating up a dumb elephant and then hooray I'll actually get some options in battles :toot:

This was my lineup last year and I'm not sure I wound up rod breaking.  The good chaps who already replied got you covered on where to get the moneys if you do want to channel your inner arsonist. !Focus on the Monks and hopefully you have the Heal Staff and keep your mages on support/heal duty if you want to just punch punch straight up.  Dischord can get kind of nasty if it hits your physical attackers though, I think that's the main hiccup you'd have if you don't break rods.

It's the most wonderful time of the year! I did enjoy the write-ups for my half-baked LP of last year's 4JF and I thoroughly enjoy seeing how people are doing during theirs, so I figured I'd do it again. This particular run is a Chaos Natural run, so 4 permanent jobs picked out of a hat. Time to flex that half-baked FF5 know-how! :fail:

Butts was the preferred choice for a name and was actually requested but I remembered that I had used it for my first playthrough on the GBA version. After some pondering, I folded and just went with Monty. There will be plenty of weird knights, killer rabbits, and questing for shrubbery to merit the name during this playthrough.

My first encounter with the party? A back attack. This bodes well for everything to follow, surely.

...And the same thing happens two fights later. Truly I will not get a surprise ganking that will cause me to lose 90 minutes of progress somewhere.

Even in town! Thanks Goblama.

Gramps gets some offhand treatment just to be different.

Up all night to get funky or however it goes? Hey you kids heard of Smashmouth? I hear they're pretty radical.

Halfway up the wind temple I get a surprise elixir drop! I had no idea this was a thing! Should I get a bad draw for healers, I may wind up back here before world 2 shenanigans start.

By the way, Birdie McRaptor kicked the bucket before it got to use its defensive stance. I was thinking of how it was part of a string of introductory bosses in Final Fantasy's ATB era which would enter a phase where they would guard and counterattack if struck. A party equipped with 4 broadsword filleted it before it did so. Oh well.

Why do they not put these things on the bottom floor and why do they build these places as empty mazes filled with random critters anyhow?

NO BOKO YOU CONDESCENDING JERK I'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR MORE THAN 15 YEARS DON'T ACT LIKE I WAS BORN YESTERDAY.

Anyway, Monty's a knight this time around so I swap him over. You'll notice he is wearing the chromatically superior red armor. Good to know that I have both a powerhouse and a tank right out of the gate. Knights may be a bit dull but hoo daddy is the reliability a blessing after last year's Team RNG.

Zok's hobbies include doting on people that remind him of his grandkids, being a minor plot character in JRPGs, and participating in the high jump in the Olympics despite being 87 years old. Good on you, pops.

I forget many things and one of them is if he has anything in his house and then I realized that JRPGs have trained me to rob every NPC blind every chance I get. This stuff's dangerous, kids.

A sea creature using Feeler on a female party member? Man, this is just like one of my Japanese animes.

Now this is just like one of my Japanese animes conventions, except the reverse.

JFC guys it's okay you don't have to feed me these things. I get one more later, too. I swear I don't ever remember this being a thing.

Don't forget! I often do!

Siren proves to be a bit of a bother simply because I had forgotten that she uses poison. Here she's using Silence for reasons beyond anyone's knowledge. Thanks, old AI!

She doesn't even get a second chance to go undead. A single minute of fast-forwarded grinding just prior to this is enough to get a couple of levels at this stage, making fights like this trivial.

Onward, ho! Such is the fate of Team Press A to Win. Join us next time on the continuing adventures of Team Press A to Win 2: Press A Harder or The Knights Who !Say Ni.

It's beautiful.

Red Mage is the weakest link by leaps and bounds and even then oh well it's a dude who can heal up between battles without needing to stock up on items too badly and can wield rods/staves (Power Staff to 'zerk things like Omniscient, dual wield rods for rod-boosted rod breaks to make up for the lower magic stat a bit, etc.)

Defeated Byblos without breaking rods at all, even though I've bought some rods :v.

The pain of Byblos is his Dischord, that would drastically lower the damage of the Monks. My Time Mage is busy whacking staff on the team and almost no room for Demi/Gravity.

With that, Fire-Powered Ship is secured, and off to Crescent to claim my Ranger.

Slowly making my way forward, and made a hilarious mistake and had everyone at level 15 while doing the Library of the Ancients.

Page 64 (or was it 128?) used Level 5 Death.
Party wipes. I had just beat Ifrit too. That's kind of a disappointing way to game over for the first time in a run. :V

We rejoin our heroes doing what they do best - robbing people blind despite not having a thief. Hopefully they'll understand since none of it will matter if the heroes of the story kick the bucket.

Thank you for that use tidbit of info, random NPC lady! I'm sure two thirds of the town will not parrot the same info now that you've said this.

The party learns something important about the Knight. But what does it mean? If Dark Souls taught me anything, it's "try using both hands" in conjunction with "amazing chest ahead." Cryptic.

"Toni~ight, I'm gonna have mah-se~lf a real go~od time." See? Using both hands has paid off already! Mystery solved. Good job!

A party consisting of a knight and 3 freelancers can get expensive if you always want to have the best equips. Rest in peace, dear wallet. Yeah, RIP. Of course, this bunch is ready to RIP some bad guys a new one.

The whole press A to win situation is ever-prevalent here. Where have thou gone, job commands?

Speaking of two handing, Monty earns it just in time for Magissa and Pals (TM).

So, Magissa uses poison on the local wildlife for poaching? But wouldn't that damage the meat? But the only part of the dragon that she's interested in is the horn? OK. For a throwaway boss, there's ~LOGIC~ here.

Way back when I first played this game, it was such a nice touch to find that the king's mythril helmet wound up in your inventory and Lenna started the battle poisoned. Nice bit of continuity there.

Two handing proves effective immediately. Yikes.

Mr. Pals doesn't last very long against a longsword onslaught and Magissa is soon to follow. No poaching please! Also it just occurred to me that these sprites are very similar to some in FF6 I think? Why am I observing this now?

Remember kids, dragon slobber cures all kinds of poisons! Scaly kisses for the nice lady. Having a pet dragon opens things up to getting the healing staff and a couple other nice goodies right off the bat.

Tycoon!
TyCOON!
TYcoon!
It's only a model...

SWEET thanks for the free gear, Mr. Chancellorman!

I swear I missed visiting Tycoon early on my first 3 playthroughs. Doing so really pays off here considering I have so many characters that are freelancers for now.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the party steals a legally blind man's glasses. Seriously, guys?!

The number of cutesy references in this game are pretty great. Woolsey would be proud.

I mean seriously.

The elven mantle is too good to pass up, so down in the dungeons I goes. Yeah I learned my lesson from last year. Quicksave, ho!

The team from Walse's synchronized dying performance went spectacularly at the Red Shirt Olympics.

I'm sure the people of your expansive kingdom will be thrilled to hear that you wound up here for no good reason, sire! I'm sure that your kingdom will be fine without leadership during these trying times, your bleeding outness. Maybe the kingdom is better off?

Several of us watched with bated breath as the four players in THE RUN barely survived the encounter with Garula. Here I have no trouble whatsoever. :V

Garula counters Monty's assault with a total of 3 different attacks and they do about as much damage as a feisty kitten nibbling on your hand during playtime. Bye friend. I know you weren't yourself. Many people in this mess weren't, aren't, or won't be themselves. No hard feelings.

That's a plot-centric location for dying, stranger. If I had rolled white mage, I would've liked to have helped.

Whoops! I didn't do it officer I swears it was my bruddah. Fare thee well, sweet Syldra. Anyway, the Water Crystal job turns out to be Mystic Knight! Time to swap!

Lenna goes from last year's tiger bikini to this year's MC Hammer pants. Not a very fashionable upgrade. Then again, the game was made in '92. Either way, her job for the rest of the game is dishing out sweet spellblade action.

I'm so excited! I've played this game from start to finish maybe 5 times and not once did I ever use this class. Then I played Bravely Default and suddenly I realized what I missed out on. Break blade erry day. Apparently.

Welcome back to Team No Really Mom I Swear I Have A Job It Just Hasn't Started Yet.  This chapter and the following were streamed last night Tuesday night (I zonked out before finishing this writeup oops) so I wasn't as on top of screencapping as I would have liked to be because I was too busy yapping and being absolutely fantastic at video games.  Oh well I'll try to be better about that next time (tonight?  Friday?)

After departing town I make my way up a mountain.  It took me too many playthroughs to learn that I can switch out who I am running around with, sorry (not sorry) HALLO? you get the boot.  This was the first year I managed to not accidentally dash into the poison flowers great work me!

In a game where the final boss is named Exdeath it might not be so wise to be beating up gravestones and risk enraging the dead but what do I know.

Lucky for me Reddyne's significantly better about hitting the screencap button so if you're reading this you probably already saw what happens in terms of ~plot~ Here is where Team Press A To Win Except When I Don't hit a bit of a roadblock.  Without any of these newfangled spells or skills, I didn't quite have the DPS to take out Magissa before she brought in her boyfriend (?) and then keep up with the healing necessary to not require one of the gravestones I was previously beating up.  Enter the Frost Rod I looted in Carwen, which unlike my past runs was an option this time around which I was holding onto because I can't easily disregard 18 or so years of JRPG item hoarding tendencies BUT BUT WHAT IF I NEED IT LATER??

WELL I had a 48.51% chance of not being able to use the blasted (blizzarded?) thing after Garula, and luckily for fiesta-players everywhere those are available in exchange for gilmoneys in the next town in case I do wind up with a mage job. Whoever said money can't buy happiness never had the satisfaction of snapping a rod in Soul Cannon's missile launching not-face.  Capitalism, ho!

Godspeed frost rod you served us well o7
Yeah I'm bad at screenshots so just take my word that I finally beat those clowns so hard one of them didn't bother showing up to the rodeo.

Problems, you say?  Like a certain rogue rouge raggedy rascal of a <insert clever alliteration for "stupid elephant jerkbutt who I will roflstomp this year" here> I meet soon?  Well ok if you say so.  Time to hit the skies!

I'm pretty certain I take a screencap of this one every year in honor of 4healfiesta slogfest that boss was my first year.  I think the point they want to make is that Garula isn't really a big ol' elephant jerkbutt.... but you still see him as a random encounter anyway and he totally still attacks first there so yeah.  You won't change my opinion that easily.

Have I mentioned yet how fantastic this localization is?  I'm sure it makes some people cringe (and that only gets worse from here on in) but FF5 ain't exactly high falutin' fancy feast literature here.

Pictured: Walse Castle
Not Pictured: Tycoon Castle
I totally know the difference between the two places and certainly didn't mix them up when looking for the heal stick what are you talking about?

Let's take a tour shall we?  Lots of fun* critters to see inside!
*for certain definitions of fun

um bby no

Some words of wisdom.  It would behoove me to heed them if I would rather not be a warrior of light shaped splat on the floor and stay the heck out of the basement....

....or not because I've played this game enough to know I want that Elven Mantle yesterday.  I may be greedy but I'm not an idiot, so quicksave shenanigans ahoy!

Pictured: Tycoon Castle
Not Pictured: Walse Castle

HMM YOU DON'T SAY
As a JRPG Protagonist I would be doing this regardless but good to know!  Inside said storeroom I score some fantastic weapons that I will certainly use to murderize Garula in his dumb elephant face (and a bell for Geomancer but let's be real here)

There will be screencaps of this nature the whole game I apologize for nothing.  Onward to progressing the plot - to the Water Crystal!  And trying out those sexy weapons I looted borrowed with permission that I may or may not be able to use for the rest of the game!

Whoahoho look at those green numbers from the heal stick!

Whoahoho look at those white numbers from the samurai sword!

Whoahoho look at those orange zigzags of HAHAHAHAHA GARULA HAHAHA.  Revenge is so sweet.
I'm totally going to be plinking at him with 4 thieves next year aren't I now?

With victory under my belt, the Water Crystal goes boom and so does the tower.  I'm not an engineer, but I have to question the fellows who sign off on these things if an exploding crystal can lead to sinking the whole damn peninsula.

Syldra you saved us but but :ohdear:

With that I roll for my Water Crystal job.... Ranger!  Isn't going to do me a lot of good until after Byblos but five words:

Rapid
Fire
!Spellblade
Chicken
Knife
RIP in pieces game.  But alas, such shenanigans are a little further are a world (or two) away.

For now, I finally get some other things to do in battle and look totally fashionaaabluh if I do say so myself, especially the menfolk (and Krile but she just looks cute in everything)

Tune in next for more fun and fiesta-ing with Team I Certainly Won't Forget To Buy Black Magic No Siree

EDIT: JESUS CHRIST I JUST LOOKED AT WHAT ELSE YOU'VE ROLLED HAVE FUN STEAMROLLING EVEN HARDER THAN I AM
Bard/Samurai/Chemist

Oh sure it sounds great

but I now have to do Sandworm, Crayclaw, Adamantoise, Sol Cannon, the Lonka Ruins, and Archaeavis.  With only Bards.

once I get past this the game is going to be pretty much smooth sailing but before then oh god

I have passed the wind shrine and unlocked my first class: Knight. This has yielded intensely complex and engaging gameplay!
