So close...

But still, clearing out an Ethereal base without much trouble. Just wow.

A Muton Battleship is detected over the Atlantic, being shot down over the Canadian wilderness.

Operation Devouring Wind commences. It will be an ongoing mission to salvage the wreckage of any battleships that are shot down. It's a fairly straightforward routine at this point, so a play-by-play isn't needed. Mind control any aliens that the troops spot on the ground, have them scout around, and either have them take each other out or disarm them and let ground troops take them out.

Result of Operation Devouring Wind, Phase One
Col. Uta ?Hailfire? Mederow: 2 kills
Sgt. Andrea Martin: 2 kills
No X-COM casualties
4 aliens killed by X-COM ground forces
9 aliens killed by aliens
UFO hull, reactor, navigation systems, fuel, and entertainment systems recovered

Elerium is shipped off to other bases to add to the fuel supply.

Sectoid scout ships are taken down over Africa.

A small scout ship is destroyed.

Another supply ship is shot down.

An Ethereal probe is destroyed.

An attempted Snakeman infiltration operation is disrupted over Italy.

A scout ship hunting for the base in Europe is shot down over the UK.

A Muton scout is intercepted and shot down over the Indian Ocean.

A supply ship is sunk in the ocean.

A Sectoid scout is shot down.

An Ethereal supply vessel is shot down over the Middle East. While it seems like a good opportunity for valuable materials, it would be best to avoid any unnecessary confrontations with Ethereals until it's time to assault another base.

Additional storage comes online at the polar base.

A Snakeman ship is shot down off the African coast.

Another battleship is shot down by the Avengers. The next part of Devouring Wind begins.

Result of Operation Devouring Wind, Phase Two
HWP: 1 kill
Col. Alan ?Emergent? Wright: 1 kill
No X-COM casualties
2 aliens killed by X-COM ground forces
14 aliens killed by aliens
UFO hull, reactor, navigation systems, fuel, and entertainment systems recovered

A Sectoid scout evades interception.

An Ethereal terror ship is shot down near Iceland.

A ship hunting for X-COM Two is shot down off the coast of the India and Sri Lanka.

An Ethereal supply ship is shot down over the south Atlantic.

A battleship shows up on radar, but both of the Avengers are still being repaired and there's no real way to take it on.

A Sectoid scout ship is shot down.

An Ethereal supply ship is detected off the African coast, but there isn't any way to intercept it before it reaches its destination.

An Ethereal ship scouting for a site to establish a new base is shot down.

A scout is shot down over the Spain-Portugal border.

A small ship hunting for the base at the North Pole is destroyed.

A scout ship slips away from air patrols, but it poses no significant threat.

Containment at the Arctic base is now online. The elite psionic troops can now safely capture alien forces from ships and bases.

Snakeman ships are intercepted and shot down as forces prepare for the next phase of Operation Defiant Will.

Sectoid scouting operations are also disrupted.

Avenger-1 ?Jane Bailey? is repaired and ready for operations again. The squad is rallied and gets ready for combat.

The next target is an Ethereal base in Ivory Coast. The nature of its location has made it difficult to intercept supply shipments to it, so destroying this base will provide a huge advantage in disrupting alien operations.

The assault force is coming in with a Blaster Launcher, almost an entire squad's worth of Psi Amps, and 4 HWPs.

The entry points are separated by only one room.

A Sectopod in the hallways near the entrance is controlled and destroys itself.

A group of Ethereals and Sectopods around the entrance to the command center is turned on itself.

A commander is pulled away from the gathering enemy forces, disarming it and bringing it to the troops.

This gets it out of range as a lower-ranking Ethereal officer arms a Blaster Launcher round.

The Commander is brought up to one of the entrances, where it is surrounded by troops with stun rods.

One of the scouting HWPs is ambushed by an Ethereal in a blind spot in the hallways. It is destroyed, buy the laser HWPs only take an insignificant amount of money and a day's work by an engineering crew to replace.

Any alien forces gathering around the entrance to the control room of the base are forced to fight each other, thinning out their numbers.

This is unexpected. However, Buchard has been exerting himself so hard with his own psionics that he poses no threat to the rest of the troops.

The Ethereals continue to battle each other.

One of the HWPs breaks through to the control room. One Ethereal leader is taken out by another before the tank cleans things up.

A worn-out Ethereal trooper is brought in front of another HWP, where it is taken out by laser fire.

The third remaining HWP finishes clearing out the base.

Results of Operation Defiant Will, Phase Two
Laser HWP 1: 1 kill
Laser HWP 2: Destroyed
Plasma HWP 1: 1 kills
Plasma HWP 2: 1 kill
4 aliens killed by X-COM ground forces
15 aliens killed by aliens
3 aliens captured
Alien alloys, reactors, fuel, and entertainment systems recovered
Alien base destroyed
Debriefing: This mission ended with a commander retrieved alive. It is being moved from the containment unit at the Arctic base to X-COM One in Europe to be interrogated. This long and brutal conflict may soon be at an end.

The Ethereal commander has arrived at X-Com One and is being interrogated by the science division.

An Ethereal supply ship is pursued but lands at its destination before it can be intercepted.

The base it is stationed at is targeted for elimination. Phase three of Operation Defiant Will starts.

Troops get armed and ready to assault the base.

Forces are ready at both entrances to the alien base.

An Ethereal is spotted by one of the HWPs and falls under the control of the squad.

A Sectopod is also taken control of, made to go haywire until it's destroyed by another Sectopod, which is also self-destructed.

An attempt to take out a sentry in the center of a large storage vault goes awry when the Blaster Launcher warhead drifts off course, but there's no casualties to our own forces.

The sentry takes out the commander that forces had control over. X-COM already has a commander captured and under interrogation, so this is not a significant loss.

Iwahara takes a shot at the watchtower.

The Ethereal inside survives the initial blast, but it's exposed to a lethal shot from an HWP below.

The other laser HWP takes out an Ethereal in the hallways.

An Ethereal is turned on its closest ally before a plasma HWP takes it out.

A high-ranking Ethereal on the outlying edge of the command center is used to annihilate one of the guards with a Blaster Launcher round.

Another Ethereal is taken out by the other hover HWP.

The HWPs begin to converge on the command center of the base.

A mind-controlled Ethereal is sent into the command center, getting ambushed by a Sectopod.

Ethereal leaders are clustered in the control room. Mind-controlling one that's carrying a Blaster Launcher wipes out the entire chamber.

The Sectopod is self-destructed by firing on itself.

Results of Operation Defiant Will, Phase Three
Hover HWP1: 1 kill
Hover HWP 2: 1 kill
Laser HWP 1: 1 kill
Laser HWP 2 1 kill
Col. Alan ?Emergent? Wright: 1 kill
Sgt. Leon Gressier: 1 kill
No X-COM casualties
6 aliens killed by X-COM ground forces
12 aliens killed by aliens
Alien alloys and entertainment systems recovered
Alien base destroyed
Debriefing: Another alien base completely neutralized.

The month ends with another favorable rating from the council of nations.

Pumping the Ethereal Commander for information gives the science team the data needed to narrow down the location of the alien stronghold. The fleet holds out against scouts, attempted landings in urban centers, and hunts for X-COM bases for two weeks as this data is analyzed.

Almost 18 months into the invasion, the tipping point is reached. The site of the aliens' primary base has been pinpointed, and X-COM has the troops and technology to mount an assault on Mars. The final operation of this campaign is almost upon us; this battle will decide the fate of humanity.

Yoko Iwahara joined X-COM in August 1999. She quickly gained a reputation within the organization, partly for her combat prowess and partly for her ability to survive injuries that would be fatal or career-ending for other soldiers. She quickly rose through the ranks, eventually replacing the deceased Paul Reynolds as field operations commander. She was given the title ?Avatar of War? when her psionic strength was discovered;  She is not just the leader of X-COM's ground forces, but the spearhead of humanity's war against the aliens.

Alan Wright joined in November 1999, and was first tested in the fires of battle during an anti-terror operation in South Africa. He gained the title ?Emergent? due to his rapid rise to the rank of officer and the discovery of immense psychic powers.

Uta Mederow has been a part of X-COM since December of 1999. She has consistently been one of the best-performing soldiers in X-COM, even in spite of her unrefined psychic powers.

Jungo Tanida and Claude Buchard have not participated in much direct combat, but their psychic capability has turned the tide of this war.

The other soldiers have been chosen for a variety of traits, including rank, experience, shooting accuracy and psychic resistance.

Avenger-2, ?Andrea Sharpe?, gets ready for takeoff. Operation War Gods begins. From here on, there can be no turning back. If this strike fails, the alien counterattack will be so severe that X-COM ? and human civilization ? will be completely crushed.

This will be a two-phase operation, starting with an assault on the surface and breaking through alien forces to find an entry point to the alien base.

Forces get armed and ready for the final battle. Not a single piece of equipment is wasted.

The assault on the surface of Mars begins.

An advancing HWP spots a Sectoid, which the troops take control of.

It attacks a Cyberdisc behind it, and both aliens are taken out by the resulting explosion.

The HWP takes some damage while scouting, detecting another Cyberdisc. Control is taken over its organic components, and the unit goes haywire. The resulting explosion destroys both machines.

With the disc destroyed and the Martian dust, it's hard to get a good visual on the battlefield.

The next casualty of the battle is the plasma HWP, critically damaged as it crosses the gap between two pyramids.

With the location of an alien known even without a clear visual, Mederow fires a launcher warhead into the upper level of one of the pyramids.

An alien grenade is thrown at the top of the Andrea Sharpe's exit ramp. The last remaining HWP takes no damage, but  Mederow and another soldier are wounded by shrapnel and require treatment.

A cluster of Sectoid troops is spotted, and Iwahara unleashes another launcher shot.

The launcher HWP continues its patrol, taking severe damage as it runs into another trio of Sectoids.

Another launcher warhead is deployed, not only taking out the aliens but blasting out a path to what appears to be the base's entryway.

Mind control is quickly used to lure an alien into range, where ground forces take it down.

The last HWP is damaged beyond recovery by hostile fire from outside of visual range. This is where things become risky; scouting for enemies will have to be done by the troops.

Troops use whatever cover is available in order to advance towards the enemy.

Sergeant Bernard Marcelle is fatally hit by the Sectoid lurking the darkness.

Sigourney Miller manages to tank some hits and spot the alien. Mind control is used to bring it into range, where it falls alongside its former allies.

Troops manage to start getting into the base's entryway.

A grenade blast alerts soldiers to the location of one more Sectoid, which is brought into firing range and taken out. With the surface cleared of hostiles, troops can force their way into the interior of the Cydonia complex. Phase two of Operation War Gods is about to begin.

Troops have breached the surface of Cydonia and reached the primary stronghold of the invading alien forces. All that remains is to seek out and destroy the core brain of the force.

Past the surface, the base splits into two entrances.

The first alien to be encountered is a Silacoid. After dealing with Chryssalid infestations, nigh-indestructable Mutons, and the mental assaults of Ethereals, these slow-moving and almost rock-like creatures are the least threatening of the aliens that X-COM has encountered. The fact I allowed a soldier to get killed by one by oversight is one of the things that has weighed heaviest on me during my command.

The Silacoids are used to scout around.

A Chryssalid was spotted lurking in one of the cave tunnels, so a blaster round is launched by Iwahara.

The alien was further away from the blast site than anticipated, but it's still vulnerable to other techniques in our arsenal.

Isao Tanida mops up one of the Silacoids.

As mind-controlled aliens are sent through the tunnels, a massive grove of alien fauna is spotted. Similar species were found in the bases on Earth; have the aliens been terraforming?

Large numbers of aliens are spotted. Most of them seem to be the types used in terror forces, while a heavily armed Ethereal is also visible.

A Chryssalid goes after the Silacoid under our control.

Control is taken over the Ethereal, and its attack is directed at a cluster of alien forces.

A Sectopod is controlled and goes rampant, killing a Celatid and then destroying itself.

The aliens unleash more launcher fire on each other, while the Ethereal that the troops exploited is taken out by another Chryssalid.

The Chryssalid then goes running wild, but can't focus on a target long enough to avoid getting taken out.

An Ethereal is sent to scout, wandering off into what appears to be a storage facility.

Arthur Martin is hit by plasma fire and falls in battle.

The Sectopod responsible is spotted, and psionics are used to keep it and an Ethereal suppressed while troops focus their efforts elsewhere.

A mind-controlled alien is sent into what appears to be the base's core. A large device appearing to be the alien brain is found. While it would be easy to just mind control an Ethereal and destroy it that way, an objective this significant requires a more direct response.

The Ethereals guarding the sphere are turned on each other.

Iwahara and Mederow get into position for the final strike, setting waypoints for two successive warhead launches.

While the last remaining Ethereal guard in the command room manages to block one of the launches, the blasts are enough to rip apart the chamber. The floors are broken apart, alien bodies are completely obliterated, and nothing remains of the alien brain.

Operation War Gods has succeeded. After almost a year and a half and countless lives lost, the alien invasion has finally been defeated.

I am pretty sure that is not how any of this happened.

With confirmation that the alien brain overseeing the invasion force has been destroyed, X-COM forces return to Earth. Bernard Marcelle and Arthur Martin will be buried with full military honors. Technology salvaged from wreckage of the base has been placed in storage for later analysis and study.

Without a guiding intelligence to lead them, the alien forces on Earth fall into disarray. Over the next few weeks, X-COM assaults the remaining Ethereal bases. Without any support from off-planet, the remnants of the alien forces quickly fall.

Although the alien invasion has been halted, the council of backing nations gives X-COM and its bases permission to remain operational. With no immediate threat to humanity, the organization's goal shifts to research, searching the cosmos for potential extraterrestrial threats and developing new technology for if an invasion should ever occur again. Yoko Iwahara becomes the head of this new post-war X-COM.

As X-COM research is declassified, there are great strides in numerous fields of science. In particular, reverse-engineering of alien technology has allowed for many advances in space exploration. Some time after the aliens have been pushed off of Mars, humans manage to settle on the planet.

I'm glad I was able to see this through to the end, and I'm happy that people enjoyed this. I don't know what'll come after this; I'm not playing Terror from the Deep (or at the least, if I do I'm not LPing it) because it's pretty much more of the same. I do want to try and play through another game, but I'm not sure I want to do one that's as time-consuming as this one.

Thank you to all my readers for following this playthrough for the last four months.
