few questions to get started
« on: January 30, 2015, 10:50:06 PM »
Hello Touhou community  :3 I am new to these games, I have a couple question. I know I could probably answer these myself if I did the research but.. I'm lazy  :)

1. This is the most important question- is there any way to change the movement controls? I am left handed and I find it really difficult to control movement with my right hand, so I want to find a way to change the keyboard controls before I start playing.
2. where is the best place to buy all of the digital versions of the Touhou games? Or should I buy a physical version?
3. What he best way to learn about the universe? Is there some good canonical media to read? Especially about the Scarlet sisters
4. is there a way to increase the fps above 60?
5. Do many people here play osu!? one of the reason I started playing is because I really love all the Touhou music, U.N. Owen was her is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Thankyou~

1. There appear to be several keyboard remappers out there which might help. Not sure what to recommend.
2. At the moment, there no places to buy most games digitally, although the Playism Japanese store is selling Double Dealing Character. For physical copies, there's J-LIST and other vendors that import from Japan.
4. Dig around for the V-sync patch and modify the ini to increase the FPS. Because the games are hard coded to run at 60FPS, this will also increase the speed and make them harder.
5. Don't think I've heard of it.

1. I use AutoHotkey and the following script to map movement to ESDF and shot/focus/bomb to JKL. You may need to tweak the mapping since some keyboards will ignore certain key combinations.
You can test your keyboard using this website. The minimum requirement is to be able to hold shot, focus, bomb, and the diagonal directions simultaneously (in this case, ESJKL, EFJKL, SDJKL, and DFJKL).
Code: [Select]
#MaxHotkeysPerInterval 1000
#NoEnv
SendMode Input

e::Up
d::Down
s::Left
f::Right
j::z
l::x
o::c
k::LShift
i::LCtrl
2. see Emerald's post
3. http://en.touhouwiki.net. You can also search the forum threads here.
4. The games are designed around 60FPS for various reasons, so I'd stick with 60 if I were you. The VSyncPatch is cool but is only necessary if you notice input lag (a short delay between a keypress and your character moving) or want to make the game harder.
5. No, but I have friends who do.

I actually find it curious that you're left-handed and yet prefer to control movement with your left-hand. Video games traditionally use the left-hand for movement, even though the majority of the population is right-handed, and Touhou happens to be an exception.

Thanks a lot, this worked perfectly, exactly what I was looking for. even my keyboard didn't have any ghosting.

I think Touhou is set out the way it is because it lets (most people) you control the hardest aspect with your dominant hand, that makes sense. In an fps aiming with a mouse is more important. But in Touhou the movement definitely is.
I think almost all left handed people use the mouse in their right hand, because that's simply the way computers are set up. But if I'm serious about a game, I definitely try and use my dominant hand for whichever role is the most intense.

I see, I guess it doesn't matter then. I only wanted to make the fps higher because moving objects look a lot prettier at high fps with a high hz monitor.

I find this really weird. I think ZUN (?) could make a lot more money from the games by selling digital copies and making the games much more accessible to the non-Japanese audience. It's always been an idea of mine to have a program like Steam, except for J-media. But anyway, I'll definitely have a look around and buy these games, I guess physical copies also have the added benefit of looking nice  :)

It's worth having a look at, since it's free. It's actually quite similar to Touhou, not in the gameplay but the self improvement aspect, and also the Japanese influences. One of the reasons I'm here is because I need to take a break from that game due to symptoms of of RSI (lots of  repetitive motions; it's very bad for that). Maybe I'll make a thread on it sometime.

So if anyone cares on what I've been doing so far, before I made this thread I tried playing Highly Responsive to Prayers, because I had this fanciful idea that I was going to play - and beat - all of the games in order ::)- I managed to beat the stage 15 boss, which was an achievement for me, but the last boss was way above my abilities. And then I realised to properly complete the game you had to do it on one set of lives :o
But I've just had my first game of the modern-style games- Imperishable Night. I managed to at least make it to stage 3 with max lives  :derp:, it's really fun  :D I think I'll make it my goal to complete that game on normal, and eventually the rest as well. Thanks for helping out with the questions~

I don't think ZUN is looking to go commercial any time soon. More digital downloads from doujin stores would sound nice.

In regards to accessibility, that would mean translation and possibly adapting them to modern standards, which is a lot of work. I can imagine not every game would be available on the same date, while some may not come at all.
Also when you mention accessibility, do you refer to the gameplay as well? I can't imagine it would be affected regardless of language.

Glad to hear things are working.
Imo you should try Touhou 6 before going back to 8. 6 is better at teaching Touhou fundamentals, due to a more natural difficulty curve, simpler mechanics, and lack of visible hitbox. Also, unless you've seen it already, Touhou 8's 4th stage is something that you should hold off on until you're more familiar with Touhou 6, for various reasons.
