Rebirth is a great game.

I think I may have burned myself out on it a bit, having played it so much in the week or so after its release.  :derp:

I have Golden God, mostly I need to do the challenges and get The Big Secret, and I will be a true PLATINUM level god.

I must say I'm so happy Rebirth has official controller support, controllers are way easier on me than the keyboard on this thing.

Just keep trying, sometime luck just isn't on the player side. As you keep unlocking stuff, you will probably get more interesting items in you runs.
Also, consider doing a few challenges. The unlocks you get from them can then help you in the main game. ^^

So i got this game, never tried the original, but damn it is fun. I never got it because i really dont like the garbage pail kids style it reminds me of, but whatever, im past that now.

Recently there are murmurings to an expansion already, yay. Not really sure why some things are in spoilers and im on my phone so its troublesome for me to since im not 100% on the tag format so ill just ask vaguelike...

Is there something that unlocks if i kill a certain boss behind a giant golden door a certain number of times? I was kinda bummed that beating him unlocked nothing, and i could have obtained something if I killed ??? Instead (which ive done but no with the character i was playing at that time yet).

Also, is it just me or does petrified poop and mom's coin purse appear every single damn game. Tired of seeing those things.

You get nothing from doing that except for that ending.

And I do see the Coin Purse very often too. The poop not so much.
I actually like the poop. But that was because of me playing on Hard Mode and I got a decent amount of items out of it. :V

I've not seen anything about this (and I've sought out 100% completion info by now) and the currently documented secrets total the 178 in the list without doing anything, so, is this anything more than suspicion?

Absolutely false information. The only method that
Spoiler:
The Lost
unlocks an item that differs from everyone else is defeating It Lives, Isaac, Satan, Blue Baby, and The Lamb on Hard. You do not need to defeat
Spoiler:
Mega Satan
for this to happen.

So i tried to clear a few challenges. Not sure what's the point of "Technology+Homing Shots" challenge and that "Huge-Ass Cupid Arrows" challenge, since both of them pretty much murder anything, but oh, well it was still fun.
Anyway, i was playing Head Trauma and then at Basement II i got Brimstone and Dark Bum in the devil room. It kinda defeated the point of the challenge, but it was kind of challenging in its own way. Yes, half a second charge Brimstone is awesome, but due to the mods of the challenge its damage was... well... kinda lacking.Still better, than that swirly crap. Hardest part was probably Monstro II, who took fucking forever to kill even with poison shots power-up i picked up. Mom was surprisingly easy in comparison.
Any tips on clearing that nightmarish combination of Ipecac+Boomerang tears that is "Suicide King"?

Either get used to how the projectiles move on return or learn how to fling them right at your enemies.
Unlike in WotL the Ipecac projectiles no longer only explode when hitting the ground.
Getting about one shotspeed upgrade and some extra movement speed makes this rather easy as the shotspeed acts as extra range and movement speed kinda does the same.
Whip Worm is a really useful thing to have.

You basically move in tiny circles and use the momentum to extend your range. Once you get the hang of it the boomerang effect can be circumvented.
Or just get Brimstone/Mom's Knife to replace the shottype altogether. :V It's kinda silly how that is an option in several of the challenges.

If it's any consolation:
Spoiler:
I thought at first it would go all the way down to Stan since some other challenges did but it ends at Mom's Heart/It Lives.

Spoiler:
No...? That challenge very, very definitely goes to Isaac in Cathedral. You must be confusing it with something else.
At least if you lose all your hearts then Lazarus' revival activates Polaroid, letting you go ham on the boss and hopefully finish it.

I currently have an attack plan in terms of unlocking items.

1. Clear The Chest with any characters that have yet to do so.
2. Clear The Dark Room with everyone (except Isaac and Azazel, they've already done so)
3. Clear Mom's Heart on Hard with everyone.
4.
Spoiler:
Unlock The Lost, and do the above again

There's probably a better plan than this, but it's the one that I have. Somewhere in there,
Spoiler:
Mega Satan
shall fall, but for now, I'm focusing on obtaining items.

Well, after my first trip to Cathedral, which i totally didn't cheese with flat-worm-shielded-tears and standing and firing in one spot for like 75% of the fight, i can't really say. Satan is actually easier from the looks of it. Fallen is a joke, you can more or less circle-strafe the second form and his third from is quite easy as well. :V

I somehow manage to get hit at least once in Satan's last phase but usually manage to no-hit defeat Isaac.
It's most likely a personal thing.
Satan is so intrusive.

I hate Isaac's screen-filling third stage, but somehow I managed to dodge everything when I was down to half a heart. The adrenaline must have helped.

And Satan's second stage is hell (heh) for me. I'm terrible at dodging spreads.

Wish you could somehow lock back ???. Imagine, you have no keys, you go to every room on the floor, hoping to find at least one. Finally RNG decides to take pity on you and gives you that one key. And you, full of excitement, go to the treasure room, only to find The Poop inside. Soulcrushing.

If it's not poop it's going to be beans.
There's so many items with little use in this game. :V
I've had the poop together with petrified poop and it gave me a sizeable amount of consumables. It's still a bad item though.

Had my first experience with an unwinnable situation. I had explored all directions except north of a floor and was left with a heart left. I go north, and it's the Bomberman style room. The issue? The bomb near the door was replaced with a troll bomb. And not just any troll bomb, the one that homes in on you. Worst of all, I had IPECAC shots as well. It was a no-win situation, and it felt kinda bullshit. It was looking like an okay run for Cain as well!  :(

Picked this up on Steam at a 33% discount, and lets just say it's harder than I thought it would be. Maybe it's because I haven't played "dual-stick" shooters like this in a while, because my longest run was barely over 8 minutes.

The fact that finals are coming up probably means I won't

It's hard indeed and harder than the Let's Play you might have watched might (if you did) have you think.
The first floors deserve a special mention because outside of the treasure room, you have very little occasions of getting some power-up.
If the treasure room didn't help, you'll have to make do against the boss with basic stats more or less.
as you get further, it's not as bad because you can get various things from several source to help.

That being said, don't despair. As you do stuff, you'll unlock more items to help and new characters with their own specific strength.
Also, you can at least somewhat rely on
Spoiler:
the Bible
for easy final battles at first.
Eventually, new final bosses will be unlocked and you won't be able to rely on that trick but by that point you'll have already started to unlock new stuff that will make your life much more easier.

Until you get to the point where you get super good, just keep trying until the game basically decide to give you victory on a platter. :)

You can wish for anything!

It's worth mentioning that the game becomes way easier when you learn enemy and boss patterns (hint: they tend to telegraph their attacks). Usually the choking point for me is getting an item or powerup that is difficult to use and that's how I usually end up dying :V

It's ok to be bad. I occupy that peculiar skill level where I can barely play competently, but getting really good items can really snowball a run into a success.

Then again, I tend to play so reckless that I end up losing if I don't get lucky.

One thing that really hurts my play is the fact that there's no lag and the action seems faster. The ridiculous slowdown on original Isaac was great for someone with slow reflexes like me.

I'm not much of an achievement/trophy whore or anything but I have reasons in this case... if you had this game but didn't register it on steam, then do so after playing quite a bit, but steam achievements don't register, even if you re-do them because it thinks you already got em... is there a way to transfer them somehow via savegame? For example, I beat boss behind golden door, but steam doesn't even think I unlocked it lives yet.

Well that was an interesting run:

> Maggie
> First floor Headless Horseman
> Awful 1st Devil Room; have the Pony and Magnet Tears
> Get Goat Head in a Curse Room
> Angel rooms are all bad or spirit hearts [Dead Sea Scrolls Q_Q]
> Item rooms suck and all replace Pony for inferior [Bob's Head? Doctor's Remote? The Bean?]
> Get PHD and get a billion Tears and Range up pills [Also Oh No! is in the bad pill rotation with the animation but PHD don't stop it]
> Cancer Trinket
> This actually makes things really hard and makes some really crazy things happen. Like; Pin acting like a homing missile crazy, or Zombies being nearly invulnerable since they magnet around. I'm literally drawing every enemy at me like I'm a black hole whenever I fire because of my sheer fire rate; but my damage is so awful that I can't kill things in time.
> Get to Womb 1
> Double Fallen
> Fear Shot
> Go to get it
> Overshoot [I kinda... bounced off the item] and fall down to Womb 2
> Didn't even go in the Angel Room
> Throw run at Heart

Seriously. That run was stupid and I threw it, and I did it all with Maggie base damage too Q_Q Fear Shot would have literally won me the game because it's a slight damage up. I also wanted to see what Magnet + Fear would do. Heck; I had Goat Head. That could have been my first Sheol clear [Wait do Angel rooms take you to Sheol or Cathedral after Heart? Because they actually don't share the same code anymore.]

And I get the feeling that final angel room; just to spite me; probobly had Sacred Heart or something actually useful.

Perhaps I shouldn't have picked up Magnet Shots; probobly did far more harm that good. Or perhaps I should have picked up Brother Bobby in that first deal :P

===

Edit: As if the game knew my salt; the next game it gives me a devil deal with Brim; Dark Bum and Pentagram on Basement 2. I beat the Heart and got to Phase 2 of Satan from the trapdoor. Never fought Satan before; or even been in Sheol; so I think I did OK.

I had a cometely ridiculous run. So, what happens when you combine Monstro's Lung, The Parasite,  Chocolate Milk, Proptosis, Ipecac and maxed out damage? Shit like this. Basically you shoot a cluster of huge, and i mean HUGE tears, which then explode and split into more exploding tears, which then blow up. Nothing could survive it and ironically that includes Isaac if he gets into blast radius. Which considering the size of blast radius is pretty much every time. Here's some screenshoots.
