Every awakening that exists now existed back then, but TPA didn't boost attack by 50% so it was largely worthless. Damage reduction was also only 2% each, and the stat boost awakenings were about half as potent as they are now.
Gungho gave everyone a free TAMADRA via gift dungeon when awakenings were introduced but after that, we were basically told "Go do Metal Dragons and pray" or get lucky on the PEM. Thursday and Friday Dungeon did a lot in terms of making them more accessible, though.
A bit of extra info:
-Awakenings were released together with Tamadoras as the main way of awakening along with dups
-All monsters you see with awakenings now got the awakenings added to them at the same time awakenings were released. Top-tier leaders back then got very crappy awakenings. (See pre-ult Horus, Angel Lucifer)
-Only one new awakenings was added after its initial implementation: Skill Bind Resists (because skill binds were only a thing since Izanami, and awakenings were released at around the time Athena was out I think)
-REM gods started out with only 3 awakenings only. But Collab REM gold eggs usually came with four (I forgot starting with which collab, but HxH from late 2013 had Kilua/Gon/etc which had 4 awakenings). Eventually, they decided to add the fourth awakening to every god series to balance that out. They also took this timing to implement skill bind resist. This is why most of the top-tier leaders back then in early 2014 got a skill bind resist as their fourth awakening. (Egypt 1.0s, Kushinada, Ookuni, Kirin)
-Demons were included in the "get fourth awakening list" but ninjas were not.
