Looks like I will be getting improvised cosplay material in time for this too. Won't be mentioning what it exactly is here until it arrives. :P

Magfest is especially great because it attracts so many different circles of friends IRL and online.

Hooray music the 80s dance we've been craving to go to since we were 16!

If anyone's trying to find our peoples, just look for me - I'll be running around the con in a long olive drab Italian Army alpine parka and ushanka, spamming the announcement sound from Papers, Please and stamping temporary visa slips that deny people entrance to MAGfest.

SO HYPE FOR THIS CONVENTION

Oh man, I can join you guys with my new ocarina

I'll bring my acoustic theremin

Oh my god

You need a cardboard border checkpoint booth, made like Lucy's psychiatry booth from Peanuts.

We thought about it but transporting it down is the issue, we're filing all 7 of the seats in a minivan.

We can fit a meter stick so he can carry around my wonderful reproduction of the masterpiece "Arstoka Hero".  I hope I can do it justice.

It's cardboard, just fold it in half and put it in the trunk or something :V

Still bangin' out room arrangements and payment info. I think this is a heavy case of too many cooks spoil the soup since we've got a few people trying to arrange things for 40 people but if we just split things up a bit this would all have been done weeks ago.

Shipping and handling has been the death of many a great costume idea. Make it built to stand the test of time and it'll be too big and cumbersome. Build it to fit and it'll fall apart when someone so much as shifts their weight.

Yeah folding and then unfolding cardboard isn't going to look so good.  We were able to hide the fold seam on Chiyo's Dad with the felt.  I mean I'm sure there's a way to craft it in a way to assemble it on site buuuuut I ain't cosplaying at this con I am not taking on any more things to worry about other than my groups' registration woes (we got someone who got a panelist badge and who's coming/not coming now and ahhhh) and working on my music because hahahaha.

Allow me to state the reasons why this is going to be an awesome Papers, Please costume despite lack of border booth:

1) custom soundboard app on my phone with the announcement noise and "papers" being the sole buttons

2) borrowing a small portable speaker to enable spamming announcement noise

3) this stamp

4) this badge (it's getting painted tonight) to be pinned to an ushanka
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:616888

5) these things that I'm printing in droves

So yeah

Oh my god

Schedule is up.

I got all of the room stuff in order on the same day that I finished my most recent costume. I also got a hefty shrug of indifference from the one person who could've thrown a fit about all of the organizational stuff I half-railroaded that needed to happen sooner or later. Yesterday for con prep couldn't have gone better or been more successful!

EDIT: Some great stuff here but the prom STARTS at 11:30 pm on Friday. Well gramps doesn't need to be depressed AND tired, so you can forget that, thanks very much. >:(

Double Edit: 8 people out of 40 have flaked out over the last week now. I now realize that so few people volunteer for this job because no one likes it.

That is some really pesty schedule layout, I need to wait for a pdf or Guidebook to really get planning.  And that has to be incomplete since they have basically nothing on Monday (which I guess is the normal con-Sunday?)  Gotta plan when we're going to do our not-really-a-concert things  :V

Not having two concert rooms might mean the open band jam room is the smaller concert room from last year which would be fantastic, as the few times I wandered there it felt like I was trekking through some sort of murder alley and no one was in there but the staffers.

By the way, how do the concerts work out? There's like big blobs of music just slam-jammed together where one band's on for 40 minutes and then the next group is up. Does the stage just fly off into space while the next band layer waits below on a backup stage below or what? Can I jump into the concert room at the last moment to see Bit Brigade thrash it to a Mario 2 speedrun or do I have to hang around until they show up onstage?

I've never seen anyone at magfest do a roomclear or anything.  I've had a friend pretty much just camp in one room all day listening to various bands.  People walk in and out at all times, so you can't be too early or too late.

Railroading the room/payment situation went so well I might do it at every con. BV

Looks like there's some good panels. Sega Does What Nintendon't and Cho Kusoge on Friday. Saturday Morning Cartoons, Obscure Game Gems, and Unintentional Humor in Games on Saturday. Extra Credits (for EC dorks) on Sunday.

BTW what's the game room like here? Anything particularly engaging for game cabinets?

Imagine otakon's game room.  Remove several of the huge displays and replace each one with additional miscellaneous consoles.  Now add an entire extra room filled with nothing but arcade cabinets.

And that is magfest's game room.

It is a thing of beauty.

So much this.  It's always hard during the daytime to pull myself away from the place.  Technically that's most specifically DDR's fault usually, but still.

Arcade room's always a very fun place to stop by, especially as a whole group in cosplay.

I just hope that this time the 6-player X-Men cabinets are working and open. :V
