> Take a quick look around the very immediate area to see if you can find something decent to craft a makeshift weapon from. A thick stick, a few chuckable rocks, whatever you can.

>> insert class {scout}

> That said, try to keep to that rock idea. You're better set up to use ranged weapons and such.
[4] You break off several branches off of a nearby tree and sharpen them on the trunk. They're pretty thick, and it looks like they'll stand up to quite a bit of force.

>"Thank you! Thank you!"
>Buy lunch, start exploring the area around the village. Gotta fill up the minimap somehow!
[2] The whistling and cheering subsides as the crowd disperses and people begin to make their way home. Almost all of the buildings in the village are dark, and the empty streets do nothing to decrease the eerie atmosphere of the village at night.

> Shrug and head on in after the woman.
[6] You step inside and find FlamingRok in there as well.
"Nice to meet ya! Name's Marisa. Uh... you can have a seat here."
She points to a wooden chest lying against a wall.
The house is quite small, obviously meant for no more than one person to live in. There's a glowing hot cauldron connected to a wood-burning stove in one corner of the room, and there are several shelves lined with strange items standing against a wall. Scattered all over the floor are books written in strange characters, quite fitting for a magician's residence.
"Oh, and watch out for the snakes. They don't bite, but they sure give a helluva good squeeze if you aren't careful!"

>Slowly and cautiously follow Marisa.
[4] You follow behind Marisa, who leads Kasu inside before closing the door. A whiff of cold air from outside rushes in as it shuts, creating an unpleasant noise.

Not that it scared anybody...

>"I honestly couldn't tell you. We'll find out why, though. Don't worry. You should probably rest, today seems to have been rather stressful for you. I'm getting some sleep now. Good night."
>Dim the sun a little bit, then get some rest until Pat wakes me up for guarding. Allocate skill points while sleeping.
(Ah, ok. It's not a stone-underground-tunnel, it's a forest-canopy-tunnel. Got it.)
[3] As you dim the sun such that it's only bright enough to see a few lengths of your body away, Haru looks towards you and says worriedly, almost as if foreshadowing something.
"Rei- Reimu won't find us, will she?"

Oh boy, time to get physical!
>"It'll be my pleasure!" Set out to do these tasks.
[6] You grab the can of oil and make your way around the perimeter of the building, refilling the burning lamps. Afterwards you arrange the chairs in the lobby and sweep the dust outside.

And all that only took twenty-or-so minutes.
"Well, wasn't that fast! Like I said, I'll waive the difference of the cost in return for your help. Come with me, I'll take you to your room."
Just then, NekoNekoRex walks into the lobby.
"Is that person traveling with you?"

Money -?742

> Find Nitori
[3] Despite the fact that it's a few hours past midnight, you somehow make it out of the forest and to the foot of the Youkai Mountain, where Nitori is busy with something on the ground. As you approach, you trip on the uneven terrain and bruise your knees.
"Who's there?"

>"Again, I don't know what you're talking about. Even if I did know, why would I tell someone who is outright breaking the laws of Gensokyo for unjustified reasons, and the Hakurei Shrine Maiden no less?"
>Hopefully the others can get as far away as possible... damnit, this is so messed up!
[4] Without saying a word, Reimu proceeds to push the needle deep into your spine. You anticipate the impending torture and jump forward before she has the chance to do so.
"WHERE ARE THEY?! WHAT DID THEY TELL YOU?!"

>"Yep. All I have is a pointy stick, but that helped me in a few situations."
>"Anyway, do you have any weapons for sale, like knives or small weapons on a small stick?"
[4] "Well, I do have these..."
He leads you to a box filled with knives and daggers of all sizes. Some are rusty and old-looking, as if they would break upon hitting something. Others are clean and shiny, almost like they were just casted.
"Are you going out to hunt youkai at this time of night?"

>go towards the lights anyway, feel ahead of self to keep from bumping into trees.
[6] You don't know how you did it, but you've made it to the gate of the village with only the moon lighting your way. The guards let you in as you approach, and as you walk the path you notice a hotel-like building. Standing near the door is Dudu Zombolt, who appears to be renting a room. As you enter, she smiles and greets you.
"Welcome, are you with this person?"

>"How many times do I have to tell you that I don't know?"
>Okay, MAKE A DAMN RUN FOR IT. TO THE VILLAGE, GO GO GO.
[4] You sprint forward through the forest, down the road, all the way to the Human Village, not looking back even once. Two guards stop you upon your approach, though they open the gate to let you in once they see that you have no malicious intentions. The streets are fairly empty, and the only light comes from the few houses that have lit lanterns behind their windows.

> Take a seat on the chest and glance around for valuables.
[3] You sit on the chest and look around. Although there are many things scattered around, it doesn't look like anything will be of use to you. Furthermore, you catch a glimpse of snakes slithering on the ground, disappearing and emerging under the few pieces of furniture.

>Smile reassuringly. "No, I don't believe she will. Even if she does, you won't have to worry about her. I'll make sure of that. Now get some rest."
>Proceed to follow own advice. Again, until either Pat wakes me up for guarding or something...else wakes me up.
[5] BONUS: Your next roll gets 1 added to it.
At your reassurance, Haruko finally calms down enough to fall asleep. You follow suit and lie down to give yourself some much-needed rest.

> Observe the surroundings carefully, as one would do whilst on watch.
[3] A long time passes with nothing significant happening, and your senses begin to acclimate to the howling in the distance. Just as you begin to believe that everything will be fine, you hear the bushes near you rustle as a spray of amulets tear them apart. Before you have a chance to react, searing pain erupts on your elbow, suspiciously close to your neck.
"What are you doing here?"
As the girl in red and white walks closer, you wonder whether she knows what you're hiding behind you.

>Look at Kasu. "So, who would you be? I didn't think there'd be another person to be lost in the forest like myself."
[5] BONUS: Your next roll gets 1 added to it.
Kasu sits on top of a chest and looks around as if trying to find something.

>well, nothing interesting happened today then. Back to the inn, get a good night's rest.
[3] You walk back into your room and fall asleep. Due to the caffeine's lingering effects and post-performance excitement, you never make it into the deepest stages of sleep.

Musician skill +2 (total 12)

>"Self-defense. Who knows what'll jump on me in that forest."
>Ask about the shiny knives
[3] You cut your fingers as you rummage through the knives. Seeing as how the cuts aren't that deep, you ignore them for now and ask about the newer-looking knives you've picked out.
"I'll give them to you for 1500."

You now turn your attention to the cuts and scratches. Although they weren't bad initially, they now look a lot worse, especially since the wounds have had time to bleed.

CAUTION: Mend your wounds before they get infected.

>"Uh, yes, totally I am crashing with this guy because it's better then sleeping in the woods."
[4] "Come with me, then."
The receptionist leads you and Dudu Zombolt up a flight of stairs to your room. As the three of you walk up, Dudu Zombolt trips, falls down the stairs, and lies on the bottom motionless. You assume she's dead.

Well, that sure was a thing.
>"It'd be a waste to have two beds and only use one, no?"
[1] "Come with me, then."
The receptionist leads you and NekoNekoRex up a flight of stairs to your room. As you walk up the dimly-lit staircase, you trip and break your neck as you fall down. The two of them look down at your body with horrified expressions as you look back up at them. Don't worry, they can't see you. You're a ghost now.

You are dead.

The pronouns I use for you are based on your avatars or what you've designated yourself as based upon previous commands. If you'd like me to refer to you with a specific gender, please mention that as a footnote in your next post. It's also worth mentioning that you can revive as anything if you die, be it a man, woman, animal, fairy, or youkai (of some kind). If you'd rather try to revive as who you were before you died, just don't mention anything beyond something like "revive".

Code: [Select]
>var gender = male>"Shit. Do you have bandages or something similar? And maybe witch hazel?"
[4] "Bandages? Witch hazel? I think I have them somewhere in here..."
Rinnosuke rummages through a box and retrieves a roll of soft white tape, along with some Hamamelidaceae japonica leaves.
"And I was thinking that nobody would ever be hurt, yet not dead, such that they'd have to ask me for something like that. I'm no doctor, but you look like you'd know how to properly apply these."

> Look over at Rok. "Me? I'm just... a guy." Shrug and follow the paths of the snakes with my eyes.
[5] BONUS: Your next roll gets 1 added to it.
You follow the snakes as they slither on the ground. They seem to be moving randomly, occasionally bumping into each other and reeling back at the sudden encounter. You find it hard to believe that they're not poisonous due to their shiny, reflective coloration. On the other hand you have faith that this girl, Marisa, who works with these snakes, would know more about them than you do.

>Find Keine, or Akyuu, or someone who might be able to help. I have to let someone know something's up with Reimu!
[6] After asking the few people that you see walking around at this time of night, you get an idea of where Keine might be. Following these hints, you successfully find Keine to tell her about your encounter with Reimu, as well as the frightening scene you witnessed involving her and a young girl. Keine shudders at your explaination, and her facial expression becomes somewhat serious.

BGM: If it worked in Higurashi, it'll probably work here too.

"Some time ago there was a man from the outside world, by the name of Yukito Watsuki. Like most outsiders, he was very curious about Gensokyo, perhaps too curious. He would often visit Akyuu and me to ask us questions, and for a while he became a regular face around the village. Now, he always had all sorts of weird tools with him, among which were things like 'digital camera', 'tape recorder', and 'personal computer.' Naturally, the humans of the village were attracted to these them, so he taught them what they were and what they did. In fact, he did it so well that he almost started a revolution of sorts in Gensokyo. Many residents of the village who were once adherents of the Hakurei Shrine lost their faith and tried to explain everything with what Yukito called 'science' and 'technology' instead. It was somewhere at that time when Reimu threatened him and demanded that he stop spreading heresy throughout Gensokyo. She also became increasingly annoyed by his appearances near her shrine, where he'd often observe the Great Hakurei Barrier. Somehow, news of his research spread through the village, among which were detailed information on the composition and physical properties of the barrier. People thought that it was possible to bring things from the outside world into Gensokyo at their whims, and a few brave ones even tried to cross through to the outside world. All that must have angered her quite a lot because she killed almost all of those who strongly believed in his preachings. Those who lived past that horrific slaughter were likely traumatized, and there are even rumors that the Moriya Shrine lost some of their worshippers once the news got out. Shortly after that incident, Yukito told me that he no longer felt safe here in Gensokyo, and that he was going to leave for the outside world. We all thought he had actually went back home with his family, but some fairies who were near the shrine that day said that Reimu tried to destroy all his belongings, including his research documentation, before she would let him leave. Something must have happened, because general consensus was that he tossed a few of those through the border before she had a chance to destroy them. What followed afterwards was unimaginable, yet Akyuu and I both saw it coming..."
Keine's voice breaks off and she looks into the distance before continuing after a while.
"She... she quite literally exterminated him. To you outsiders, it's probably all the same and hard to understand, but when you 'die', your spirit merely becomes detached from your physical body. You may still have a chance at life, depending on various circumstances. But what she did to him was possibly the first, and hopefully last, time she ever performed on a human. His spirit was sealed away, and somehow she was able to erase it from existence."
The were-hakutaku looks back at you with the same stern look as before.
"I'm afraid to say that whatever Yukito had tossed through the border seems to have reappeared in Gensokyo, and that someone who happens to be from the outside world has it again. It also seems that his daughter, Haruko, broke her cover even though I tried so hard to keep her from doing so. Urrrgh, and I had thought that Reimu was just overreacting when she said she'd exterminate the entire Watsuki family..."
After a short pause, Keine looks up at the ceiling and whispers quietly:
"Wherever they are, may the gods save their poor souls..."

TL;DR: You rolled a [6], so I kind of had to dump the entire plot on you.

I wasn't warned about stairs, bro.
>Revive. Also, male.
[3] Suddenly, everything flashes pink and you somehow revive, though with intense pain all over your body, especially in your back and neck. It hurts so much that you can barely move.

> "Y'know, I feel I should ask you the same thing..." {Killing blow, killing blow! She's trying to kill me! Mayday!} "This is the third time you've gone and tried to kill me now. Well, third time's the charm and all that... This time, I'ma teach you to mind your manners 'round me!"
> Make that declaration loud and dramatic; try and wake an unmatched sock so you can get some assistance.

> One loaded gun in your left, stick in your right, assume she's a youkai and get ready to fight!
[2] Right after you make your call of help, several sealing needles fly straight into your left arm, stopping mid-way on their exit path through the other side. The gun you were holding falls to the ground with a dull thud.
"Yes. You're right. The third time is the charm. If you had kept yourself out of this, I wouldn't have had to hurt you... But I guess it's too late, isn't it?"
The pain from the barb-tipped needles through your arm is so intense that your body falls into shock. You can't even scream, but it seems that an unmatched sock heard your initial declaration of assistance.

WARNING: SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION!

>Wake up and read the paper. Any news?
[2] You're still sleeping... And you're also dreaming...

>"Oh shit!"
>Check his vitals and attempt CPR, if I can't figure out he can't be revived
>Blast him with Cuddle Beams if that fails, if I still have them. Maybe that will work?
[5] BONUS: Your next roll gets 1 added to it.
You blast Dudu Zombolt with a bout of cuddly cuteness, which causes him to roll over and groan. Of all the things a cuddle beam could do, you certainly didn't expect that to happen. He twitches for a while before stopping, though the movement of his chest tells you that he is indeed alive.

>"Hmm. Okay, I won't really delve further into this question. I can see that it won't get me anywhere." Turn to face Marisa. "So what would be the fastest way out of the forest? As nice as it was staying, I feel that I'd be cramping up the space in this area if I stuck around."
[4](+1) "So [...] around."
"Ahh... It's simple. Just follow the dirt path towards the east and you'll be outta' this forest. After 'dat, you'll be able to see the village in front o' ya."
Marisa takes a lantern from the shelf and lights it.
"Oh, and take this. Don't want ya to get lost in the forest. And watch out for youkai... And the poisonous mushrooms!"

>Mmm...sleepy time...eh? Am I being woken? Wonder what's up...should probably try to wake up...
>>Assuming I can focus in time to hear Pat's declaration, it should be pretty obvious...wake Haru up. "Stay hidden. Stay quiet. I'll deal with her." Put out the miniature sun to not draw attention to it.
>>March to the forefront. "Oh, it's you. Still following me? Not sure why you're bothering. Unless there's something you want to...confess to me, and that's why you're trying to chase me down~." She tried to be a jerk, I can be snarky to her.
>>In the event of attack, retaliate with a danmaku-destroying wall of fusion before peppering her with small star danmaku.
[3](+1) "Stay hidden. Stay quiet. I'll deal with her."
Haru almost screams in fear, but holds it back and recedes further into the hideout after she realizes just how much trouble that could bring to everyone, especially herself.
You extinguish the dim nuclear sun and slowly crawl out through the tunnel entrance, where you see Patorikku shaking in pain with at least six barb-tipped arrows through his left arm.
"Oh [...] down~."
"The Watsuki girl. WHERE IS SHE?! WHERE IS THAT THING SHE'S KEEPING AROUND?! If you value your life, tell me, NOW!"

>"...I... no way... I understand Gensokyo's all about the belief in youkai, and magic, and mysticism, but... to KILL someone just because they believe in science... that'd be no different from genociding the kappa for what THEY do. Agh, something's wrong in Reimu's head right now, and I don't know what, but she's committing unwarranted murder!"

>What to do... we need help, and fast. If Reimu found Patorikku and sock, they're probably goners. We need backup from the higher-ups, someone who'd be able to reasonably match Reimu. Maybe Yukari will see that Reimu's messing up, or maybe Yukari's supporting her actions, I don't know. Hopefully her or Marisa or someone will be able to help out... there's a better solution to this than murder.

>"I'm going to look for someone who can help with all of this. There were two people with Haruko before, but there's a chance Reimu might have found them. She caught me, but I slipped away without telling her anything. If there's anyone you can send to go assist then, please, send them. They're probably in mortal danger right now. I'm really sorry about this, but... I CAN'T let this continue. Thank you for your time, Miss Kamishirasawa."

>Okay, after all of this, let's go looking for help. Someone's gotta be around who's strong enough to challenge Reimu!

Also I don't mind the plot dump, it lets me have a long response in return. I feel like an unmatched sock slightly now. :V

>"First, I want answers. Why is this one human girl so special to you that you're trying to erase her life? I had gotten the impression at first that you protect humans, not destroy them whenever you feel like it for undiscernable reasons." Sounds rather youkai-like to me.
>>Assuming she hasn't outright tried to kill me yet, say "Well...okay, look, I know I'm no match for you. So whatever, I'll just tell you. After we lost you, I found this little red mansion near a lake. Luckily, the guard in front didn't see us as I flew us in over the wall. Luckily, there was a door in the ground that led to a surprisingly large wine cellar. Weird, red wine, I believe. I told her to lay low, I'd come and find her later. Advised her that going through the other door supposedly further into the mansion was most likely a bad idea. Unfortunately...it looks like you found me first. Just...just don't tell her I gave her away, yeah?"
>If she doesn't listen (or elects to ignore the above monologue), intercept her danmaku with a shield (like Nuclear Visor in Hisoutensoku) to disrupt her danmaku, and keep her moving with danmaku of my own. "You're really not going to give up, are you?" Striking her would also work, a little incentive to stop attacking me. Just not outright obliteration. Not yet.
