How do PS1 rpgs feel different than SNES exactly? I'm not saying they feel the same but I honestly can't quite put my finger to it aside from having a habit of being more 3d than 2d.
In any case I just barely finished the Prologue, though I thought I did when the prologue was introduced, if I just now finished the prologue, wdf was the portion BEFORE it?! I've had no issues with the game at all until I quit it, and had steam patch it (not sure if it actually patched it or if it thought it was..steam does that sometimes, where it supposedly patches games that have no new patches I mean). Anyway since that patch I've had the game crash on me like 10 itmes in the span of 1 hour, when I played like 5 hours without any issues =(.
So far it seems well worth 20 bucks, and I'm glad I got it. I miss the old golden age of console jrpgs, and this is basically one of those games, regardless of being ps1 or snes =P. That said, so far the music doesn't really strike me as outstanding like I hear it advertised as. The Ys series as a whole has better music IMO, as do other titles with acclaimed music like castlevania, xenogears, etc. I'm not complaining, but I'm just saying I've heard people specifically mention how the music is simply stunning and it's just not at that level IMO. Maybe they meant the series moreso than the first game? I dunno.
I hear the story is slow but frankly I like it the way it is. I prefer a good epic rpg story to start off more mundane and realistic, where you feel like the characters are people living lives like people, not some destined chosen one who is above all that and is immediately gunning down gangs armed with uzi's while skiiing down cliffs while being chased by helicopters or whatever.
I've heard people complain that this game is too easy, and so far I'm failing to see how it's any more easy than countless other jrpgs that nobody complains about being so. I mean sure I've never died due to not being able to determine how I should tackle an enemy, but the game clearly will pwn me if I make a big mistake I'm sure...That said maybe not if I actually purchased some new gear. I've not purchased anything from the equipment shop so far because I'm saving up for the next town's equipment shop...Since the money you get in this game seems more finite (I know it's not since you can sell those saphites or whatever they're called but whatever).
That said I'm having a hard time getting used to the fact that turning around when I see an enemy is a BAD idea because they can surprise attack me if they touch an ally in my "train". Gets me every time. That said I've had a couple game overs already because surprise attack enemies decide to gang up on an escort npc or something and kill them before my first move, qq.
Anyway I'm playing this completely blind, and so far I'm DYING to know if player-selected dialogue matters or not. For example there's a scene where you have 2 different ways of showing hesitation to killing some monsters. There's another where you can opt to charge off to someone's rescue, or "charge with joshua". I imagine charging alone makes you fight the battle (or at least a turn or two) alone, but are there any other significant consequences? I wanna hit up a faq and find out but wanna complete the game first qq.
I just hope that steam re-patches the game to be more stable once I try it some more tomorrow.
