FF5 Four Job Fiesta 2014: Can I !Mix you a !Drink?
« on: May 31, 2014, 03:24:22 PM »
(This intro post is written by three fisherman, not me)

(only if I roll chemist (which I won't))
It's that time of year again friends - registration for the Final Fantasy 5 Four Job Fiesta begins today!  What is it, you ask?
Why the most fun you'll get out of the best Final Fantasy game is what! :toot:

Instead of having to juggle between the 20 something classes, your mission is to play through with just four (or less if you choose certain modes) randomly assigned classes doled out by our benevolent overlord Gilgabot.

You can customize the fiesta in a number of ways to !Mix it up.  Here's the following options for this year as shamefully copied from last year's thread...

  • Normal - You'll be assigned one new job from each new crystal as you reach it, your party can be any combination of jobs as long as every assigned job is on at least one person.
  • Random - Like normal, but you can get assigned a job from PAST crystals too.
  • Team 750 - Breaking rods to victory with mage and mage-ish classes only!
  • Team No 750 - Breaking rods is for scrubs we're too metal for that no mages allowed!
  • Natural - One job per character and once you get it, that's it no changing Bartz is a thief all game
  • BERSERKER RISK - Are you a bad enough dude to risk having up to THREE Berserkers on your team depending on how many donations come in?  I'm not  :V
  • NEW: Classic Mode - Relive the excitement of the NES days (minus the Marsh Cave) by limiting your party to only the classes in FF1 - White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage, Fighter, Monk and Thief.  It's a natural run as you'd imagine, and duplicate classes are allowed just like in the olden days!

I've never played FF5 before this is clearly a bad idea for me
While the majority of the people who participated with us last year did, it's definitely possible and some people actually reported that having the class restrictions kept them from getting overwhelmed in what to level.  If not getting spoiled on anything is important for you that might be a little trickier I mean this game is like 20 years old,

Which version should I play?
I've played SNES English patch, PSX and GBA last year, and I'm going to do the GBA version again.   There's also Android/iOS but it seems some of the tricks have been patched out - some of the image/berserk shenanigans I believe. A list of changes between the GBA and Android/iOS version can be found here, copied from Djibriel's excellent FFV walkthrough.

Help I rolled White Mage first :(
It's ok bby, a lot of us did (myself included)  Just gotta plink through the first few bosses but at least you'll never die?

Help I rolled BERSERKER second :( :(
Byblos and Sandworm will suck if you don't have any other damage classes there's not much around that, but once you get some Doom Axes on Crescent Island sit back as random battles (and more bosses than you'd think) will drop like flies.

Chicken Knife or Brave Blade?
If you have to ask, Chicken Knife.  Not being able to run from battles ever is a pain, and there's quite a few ways to get around the !Flee effect.

Eww I got Blue Mage/Chemist how am I supposed to deal with all the items/monster hunting?
You don't realize how lucky you are just yet  :ohdear:
Click for Blue Magic lists and Chemist lists and laugh your way to the end game/bonus boss victories.

Looks sweet anything else?
Feel free to ask any questions in the thread, brag about your accomplishments, pimp out your stream (I have a better laptop I might actually do it myself this year!) and anything else go hog wild!

If you want some more general information, check the following links:
Our very own Garlyle wrote a badass FF5 handbook last year seriously he is some sort of FF5 wizard it's got basically everything you could ask for, though because of that probably not the best for straight reading - search for specific class/boss/items and you'll be golden  :3
Sulla's solo class challenge writeups are great for specific boss battle strats if you can't lean on some of the more traditional methods.
A Reader's Digest of FJF also by a fellow MotK'er I have no name for a general refresher on what you'd be looking at.

I made a list of useful notes for this too!

Let's go BERSERKER RISK, I'm pretty sure I can handle even the worst combination!

Oh, and I signed up for Random Natural with Risk. Not really interested in classic as I'm sick and tired of wind and water crystal jobs as is. Random is also biased towards those jobs but at least there is a chance for variety.

Well, here goes nothing again. Last year my party was kinda OP (Thief, Mystic Knight, Ninja, Chemist), so hopefully this year it'll be a little more challenging with Natural in place.

EDIT: ...Scratch that, I want to try Classic.

Yeah normally I feel compelled to master EVERY SINGLE JOB which mostly results in cheatcoding my AP gains to :ridiculous: and then freelancering forever and that's kinda boring and last year's FJF was my first actual win. :V

Me tooooooooooooo. There's three bosses you'll have to fight as all white mages and only the third one should give you much trouble, don't be scared to grind the hell out of things for it if you're having trouble.

Also this dude has some handy streaming tools (a class display and a death counter) for anyone who's interested in that and a randomizer that covers every mode but Classic* in case anyone wants to do practice runs.

*seriously just give every class a number and roll a die there's only 6 options and you can even get dupes it is literally that easy

I was only planning to do 1 run, but that Classic ruleset. of course Risk run has to come first cause you can't have 2 runs going at the same time(at least not without 2 Twitter accounts)

Omega will suck on Classic for sure. There is no easy way out with that ruleset.

I haven't decided what I'm going to choose.  I'm getting my sister in on the action as she never played the game so I'd want to do the same mode as her so probably normal but ~who knows~

Last year I rolled White Mage/BERSERKER/Bard/Dancer which while having obvious positives and negatives, made for an amusing run that could also clear both superbosses.  I blogged about my adventures in my Tumblr (note: pretty much everything else in there is animal photos) if anyone wants to see what sort of fun you could be in for  :V

On that note, anyone experienced in Twitch streaming?  I like talking a lot about things so I figured worth a shot - also the link Arashi posted with the job class display looks precious so double incentive :3

If my laptop can handle streaming ZSNES (it probably can) I'll be streaming all of my runs.  Runs, plural-last year I did 2, this year I want to try ALL the rulesets :V

The only question is what order, though I think I'm going to go with:
BERSERKER RISK
random
Team750 & No750 (depending on what the prior 2 runs are weighted towards for the order)
FF1Jobs
Beyond that, whatever gives me the best odds at getting new classes-secondary goal is to use every class (except Mime) at least once.  Pretty ambitious, but I know this game really well now.

Trying to get every job without Job Fair would be insanity.

I see myself doing 3 at the most. Though I did cover every ruleset except Risk last year.

Yes, sir, it's that time of the year again! Last year I managed two runs - Random Natural and Team 750 - both were great fun! This year, I'm going for at least the same amount of runs, starting off with Classic Jobs.

Also, for the past few months, I've also been doing a self-imposed four-jobs run for practice in the interim (classes chosen by the Keine chanbot on our IRC), and it's been rather exciting, too. And, hey, I have another two weeks before the fiesta actually starts, so I do believe I'll probably be able to finish it beforehand. It's become Blue Mage/Mystic Knight/Beastmaster/Chemist, which is... pretty damn broken, because I have few restrictions on Blue Magic hunting thanks to !Control, as well as a way of grinding levels in the second world with the same. Oh well, not like it's an official run. BV

couldn't contain myself and /in for the Classic mode run immediately.
Last year I did a berserker risk run, and I think a Natural run. I remember complaining baout something but I forget what. I tried out using W-Split to time myself, but that didn't work out for me since I don't go full blast.

I need to do both a 750 and no750 run this year since I never got around to that last year.

Time to be useless for a month!

I LOVE THIS GAME if the guide that I wrote is any indication (I'll probably do some formatting cleanup too before the challenge begins)
I rolled this exact team and it was a blast.  (I knew Bard was 'good' but I didn't expect "90% of the random enemies in the game are stoppable" good)

Also I'm going to be streaming the shit out of this.

Normal/Natural/BERSERKER, all day, err day

Brave Blade is also Knight Only, so a large number of team will never be able to use it, and arguably it's even less useful than the Chicken Knife due to some oddities in the battle formula and the fact you get bonus damage based off of Agility.

Chicken Knife + Berserk = 190 Attack, Omega Defense is 190 so 0 damage.

Brave Blade will damage Omega if it hits if you Berserk the Knight.

But this would maybe only come up in the FF1 classes if you rolled both WM and Knight. The only other characters in FF1 classes that can damage Omega are Black/Red Mage with reflected Thunder spells, Monk if you're lucky enough to crit, and maybe WM since I'm not sure if WM most powerful weapons can break through his defense.

White Mage vs. Omega: They can only break Light Staves which cast Holy.
Red Mages can also access Berserk via the Power Staff, and Blue Mage through Moon Flute.

Oops I went through and updated the formatting in the entire handbook I wrote (there's links in the opening topic).  It's generally prettier now.  Less mess.  Also rewrote a few things and touched up other things.

Clarification for Classic Mode players: You generate all your jobs as soon as you get the first set, everyone who's not a Red Mage gets set right away, any Red Mages stay Freelancer until the second crystal.

If that wasn't how it was, I would have immediately #Water, #Fire, #Earthed on Classic anyway even though I'd consider that kind of cheating in most other variants(Oh, I'm getting a Dancer, let's have my Thief steal something before Earth Crystal for 50% Sword Dance. instead of Do I risk this stealing being a waste of time?)

My sister and I are confirmed for normal runs.  We're actually going to stream/commentate together - we do this already on each other playing games, and with her going into FF5 blind beyond, and I quote, "there's a pirate lady, your name is Butz and the final boss is a tree" this will be a thing of beauty  :V

I will definitely be streaming.  With commentary.

Natural/Normal/BERSERKER RISK activated.  At least for the first run.

I will probably totally do an FF1 run afterwards, but I can only really get in on a Berserker Risk run on my first time through so I'mma do that.

I'm signed up for Random Berserker Risk. That chance of 2 Berserkers(since 3 doesn't seem likely).

Didn't go with Natural because there's some useful secondaries I could maybe get for them. Though I'm not sure what the absolute latest you can switch to Natural is(I know once you #Water you're locked, but not sure if you can switch to it after #Wind or not)

I'd imagine you're locked once you get your first crystal, but I don't know for sure.

And yeah, that's the thing about Natural - you lose out on synergies, which can damage a lot of classes (Red Mage isn't so bad when you can transfer even just the doublecasting to allies, but it suffers a lot more in a Natural game because you can't even do that nevermind going the other way around and dragging other magic from other classes into it).  Some classes are still absurd on their own (Blue Mage, Time Mage, Chemist, Bard, Samurai), but yeah.
