Idea!

Tokiko : Slicing Wind
Keine : Sacred Three Treasures : Sword

If Tokiko can throw out multi target air attacks, we can use the sword that controls the winds to make them all hit the proper target!

Alternately
Keine : Study
Tokiko : Stratagem

I somehow doubt Keine's spellcard actually works anything like that though... (also way too tired to come up with any exciting suggestions)

The UGLY THING is a quick little bugger and starts the next round.

It tries to bite your ankle, but you repel the attack with your COUNTER HOOF.

> Tokiko: Strategize.

You could break up a lot of these obstacles pretty easily if you could just prevent Kosuzu from getting hit. You ask Keine if she has any skills that could guard Kosuzu or make her immune to wind damage or something.

Keine says she should be able to work something out. You delay your turn to see what she does.

> Keine: SACRED, THREE TREASURES: SWORD.

Okay. The Kusanagi has the ability to control the wind. However, all you've got is a spellcard calling upon its identity to shoot wind danmaku; you don't have the actual sword's ability, so you can't use it to protect Kosuzu. But you can work around that.

You have the SCHOLARTECH PRESTIGE SKILL, HISTORICAL REVISION. You can change any single aspect of a skill, as long as you have another skill to cite as a source. A skill can only have one revision to it at a time, and each revision expends a certain number of books from your inventory, depending on how different the revision is.

So, let's get started. You have a SCHOLARTECH move called SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK. It increases the power of your earth attacks, and makes you immune to earth (but removes all other immunities). You can cite THREE SACRED TREASURES: SWORD to revise this to a wind immunity instead.

However, this skill only affects yourself, so this is going to get a little more complicated.

You have another move called CHEAT SHEET that lets a party member mimic the last move you used on yourself before this one. This would let Kosuzu use the revised SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK, but waiting two rounds to get her out of the grasp of that tentacled monstrosity is less than desirable, so you'll revise this one as well. You cite the passive skill BOOKKEEPING. It reduces the number of books expended by using SCHOLARTECH SKILLS, but also reduces the cost of revising them. With this, you revise CHEAT SHEET so that it lets the party member mimic the last move you revised before this one, i.e. SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK.

However, CHEAT SHEET still only targets party members, and Kosuzu is on the enemy side of the screen, so you'll need to whip up something even more convoluted.

You pull up one of your highest level BEASTTECH moves, SPHINX JINX. This is an expensive skill that lets you add a non-damaging single-target spell to one of your physical attacks. This wouldn't have worked with SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK, which automatically targets yourself, but it will work with the targeted move CHEAT SHEET (you're not sure if this is a bug or an oversight or what, but you'll take what you can get).

The last hurdle to jump is that you'll almost certainly knock Kosuzu out with a physical attack, so you'll have to revise that part to some other hostile action that targets an enemy. Fortunately, you have something like that close at hand.

> Keine: Do all that stuff you just planned.

It worked! A stone barrier appears in front of Kosuzu, except it's green and there's a breeze coming out of it or whatever. Now Tokiko is free to unleash whatever aerial asskicking she has in mind.

> Tokiko: STREAM, JET.

You muster up as much power in your wings as possible, and blast the TERRORHORROR with a slicing gust of wind! It rends through the tentacles and the UGLY THING all at once! Kosuzu is freed, but still in the line of fire.

It's a good thing the scenery doesn't take damage in battle scenes, or you would've blown every book off the shelves.

It is now the TERRORHORROR's turn.

It starts...yodeling? It sounds like yodeling. An OMINOUS PORTAL appears.

It also passively regenerates one tentacle back, putting it back at n+1. (It has a lot more tentacles than you can see here, but they are not valid combat targets.)

ICHIRIN and UNZAN arrive, and join the battle!

That was a cunning plan worthy of fox who has been appointed professor of cunning at Oxford.  Good thing to.  I was worried we'd have to use the Magetama to summon our dead mentor to give us some Deus Ex Machina spell or something.

Anyway Ichirin and Unzan are fully capable of pummeling the heck out of this thing.  It's time to

Keine - Seal portal

In the sad case we lack that spell

Keine - Study

Tokiko - Swoop idiot librarian out of the fight.

At the start of the next round, the OMINOUS PORTAL suddenly sprouts n+7 TENTACLES! You think another TERRORHORROR might be trying to come through!

Ichirin is faster than you, but you ask her to wait a moment while you clear the way.

> Keine: SACRED, THREE TREASURES: SWORD.

Now you can use this in a more straightforward manner. You start shooting wind-elemental danmaku at everything (including Kosuzu), clearing the field of tentacles once again. The portal closes once all offending tentacles are removed, so that's one less thing to worry about.

It is now Ichirin's turn. She seems to be trying to figure out how to rescue Kosuzu, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of special context command to pull her off of the enemy side of the screen. Looks like the programmer intended you to do the whole battle with her on the field! This is stupid.

Giving up, Ichirin goes for the more expeditious option and punches the TERRORHORROR really hard.

> Tokiko: SHELLEY, MARY.

One good horror deserves another. You use DARK MAGIC to summon forth an incarnation of GOTHIC HORROR!

FRANKENSTEIN appears at your beck and call! (If you thought I was going to read up on any of Mary Shelley's other stories to come up with something less predictable, you thought wrong.)

FRANKENSTEIN smashes the TERRORHORROR flat with DOGGA HAMMER!!

You let FRANKENSTEIN disappear into the ether after that, because you don't have nearly enough ranks in SUMMONTECH to keep it under control if it sticks around.

The TERRORHORROR is in pretty sorry shape, and looks like it will keel over next round for sure.

It passively regenerates another tentacle, and uses it to grab Kosuzu!

It then starts doing some kind of weird running animation, indicating that it is attempting to escape the battle. It could get away any moment and take Kosuzu with it! You must act quickly!

> Tokiko: Act quickly.

Your librarian's life is on the line! There is no time for hesitation! You use...

...THE SECRET FORBIDDEN TECHNIQUE.

You soar above creation, and feel the power of BIRD flow through your body!

The TERRORHORROR fainted!

The magic circle at its entry point dissipates, and the TERRORHORROR vanishes. Keine quickly slaps the book shut.

You all check up on Kosuzu. She's suffering from a bit of shock, but she'll be okay. But afterward, Keine turns to face you.

The Tengu are OP enough as it is, and you know as well as anyone how disastrous that would be. You sigh deeply, and yearn for the day when you can truly stretch your wings and embrace the power of BIRD.

> Keine: Confiscate.

Kosuzu tells you that it's not even a youma book; it's a spellbook that someone from the SCARLET DEVIL MANSION pawned. She seems more than happy to part with it, which wouldn't be the case with the rest of her collection.

You take the book. Looking it over, it seems she is telling the truth.

You open it up and take a glance at it, being careful not to touch or read aloud any of the runes. It glows eerily, and you can tell right away it's a spellbook that deals in summoning and opening portals to all sorts of strange and malign places.

It has the distinct smell of an UNUSED PLOT DEVICE. You put it in your inventory; you'll figure out how to safely dispose of it later.

You decide to leave things be for now. You tell Kosuzu that you will return later to give her an earful and inspect her collection for anything else that is immediately dangerous. She rolls her eyes and makes one of those annoying teenager sounds.

Tokiko feebly thanks you and Ichirin for your help, and stays behind to help clean up the bookstore. Tokiko has LEFT YOUR PARTY.

> Keine: Talk to Ichirin.

When you get outside, Ichirin has already changed back into her previous outfit using her instant swap passive. Changing clothes in broad daylight must convenient! (...and maybe exciting??)

You relax and switch back over to VISUAL NOVEL MODE to try to salvage your day out with Ichirin.

We can hunt down plot threads later.  For now we should make sure Ichirin has fun and avail ourselves of her fashiontech skills.  And since we have considerably more then $20 in our pocket, we can hit up someplace interesting.

Also

Tokiko - Send Bug, "Bird techniques should not be available to races that are less then 100% bird."
Tokiko - Secretly continue collecting Red Core Medals.
Tokiko - Consider adding Storycraft to combat options.
